McCain Ad Says Hayworth Committed To Birtherism, Stopping Alien Invasion (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/12/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 05:10 PM ET

For the past few months, Sen. John McCain's reelection campaign has operated on the assumption that if it can depict primary challenger J.D. Hayworth as fundamentally unserious, voters will recoil.

On Monday, the senator kept at it, releasing a new web ad -- presented in the form of a spot created and approved by Hayworth himself -- that can best be described as a "greatest hits" list of bizarre and brash statements by the former representative.

Billed as "A Special Message from J.D. Hayworth," it paints the Tea-Party-favored Senate aspirant as someone more interested in confirming President Obama's birth in Kenya (and stopping man-on-horse marriages) than tackling serious issues. In between, there are gratuitous references to Dracula, space aliens, and a Radar magazine article calling Hayworth one of the least bright members of Congress.

Considering just how quickly McCain himself has dropped pretenses of political moderation (denying, for example, that he every called himself a maverick), it takes a certain amount of chutzpah for him to accuse his opponent of lacking seriousness. But Hayworth has made the case easy -- certainly with his dabbling in birther conspiracies. And in the process, he's demonstrating just how hard it is to walk the line between Tea Party activism and sensible conservatism.

One question for the "birthers." Where is your proof that President Obama's mother was out of the country when President Obama was born? Surely you realize she had to be wherever President Obama was born, too, don't you?

What a hilarious depiction of JD's pathetic life! It is about time McCain show this state who JD really is. I am waiting for the debates, McCain will nail JD to the wall with questions about who he is, what he stands for, his reputation in Washington and his past of big spending on pork projects.

This is merely fair game for McCain to go at JD like this. JD has been going at McCain long before he even announced his intent to run for the Senate. As a "radio personality" JD spent almost all of his time attacking a McCain. He was basically trying to make his case before ever announcing his intent to run. So I don't feel sorry for him at all. Keep the hits coming Johny boy.

why is everyone in the teabagging party named Charlie Gordon?

I am proud of McCain! Pull out the big guns now and hit him where he hits you! I am so tired of all the bashing JD has done for months, even before he had announced his candidacy, he was unethically slamming McCain on the radio. Perhaps McCain camp knows that in order to get the word out you need to spell it out to everyone in the state of AZ. Those of us who watch the news and who read on a daily basis know that McCain is by far the best candidate. For those who are not that interested in politics, they need a message that is comical and this is just that, the truth in comedy...haha

Facts are neither conservative or liberal.

That was really funny. Kudos to whomever came up with that. Say what you want about McCain, but he's far and away the lesser of two evils in this battle. I've seen Hayworth a few times on Fox and he's usually the nuttiest person in the conversation. That's saying a lot, considering the usual gaggle of non-intellects on Fox.

You know, this is really sad. What ever happened to John McCain? Or was it really always there and I just didn't see it?
04:58 PM on 04/13/2010
J.D. Hayworth would be a nightmare. McCain, for all his recent shortcommings, is a much saner choice than this birther wingnut whackadoodle.

the question is not 'is hayworth good enough to be a US senator'. the question is 'how in the world did hayworth get elected to the house?'
