Chinatown Fire Death: Body Found In Building

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK — An elderly man's body has been pulled from the wreckage of a fire that tore through a building in New York's Chinatown.

The man had been reported missing after Sunday night's fire that injured more than 30 people and left 200 temporarily homeless. His body found Monday night.

Officials say two buildings will have to be demolished. A two-block stretch will also be closed, possibly for weeks, and 20 to 30 businesses temporarily shuttered.

City records show the building had several violations, including blocked passageways. The New York Times says the building was missing smoke detectors and that tenants had complained it was riddled with mold and exposed wiring.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Tuesday.
