Ted Deutch, Democrat, Wins House Race To Replace Florida's Robert Wexler

Democrat Ted Deutch, pictured, defeated Republican opponent Ed Lynch in a special election to fill the seat of former Florida Rep. Robert Wexler.

BOCA RATON, Fla. — A Democratic state senator on Tuesday handily won the first U.S. House race since Congress passed a massive health care overhaul, beating a decidedly underdog Republican who tried to use the backlash against the measure to pull an upset.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Florida state Sen. Ted Deutch had 62 percent of the vote compared to 35 percent for Republican Ed Lynch. No-party candidate Jim McCormick trailed far behind with just 3 percent. The Associated Press called the race just about two hours after the polls closed.

Deutch, an attorney, and Lynch, a contractor, both 44, were vying to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler.

"I have never before felt the way that I feel at this moment," Deutch said to cheering supporters.

"We've heard for months that tonight ... is a referendum on health care, it's a referendum on the (President Barack Obama) administration, it's a referendum on what direction this country is going," Deutch added. "Let me tell you something, what we learned today is that in Broward County and Palm Beach County, Florida, the Democratic Party is alive and well."

Lynch of West Palm Beach sought to make the race a statement on the health care bill in District 19, which includes parts of both counties. About 40 percent of voters are senior citizens. But he had a tough task. Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 2-to-1 – 234,000 to about 111,000.

"Obviously, it's not the results that we wanted," Lynch said.

"But it proved that people are willing to get out there and take our country back," he said of his supporters.

Wexler, a self-proclaimed "fire-breathing liberal," left office in January during his seventh congressional term to head a Middle East think tank. He was hugely popular in the district, which voted about 65 percent for Obama in 2008. Wexler, of Boca Raton, had endorsed Deutch.

He will now serve the remaining eight months of Wexler's term, then will have to run in November for his own full term.

Lynch had hoped public disdain for the health care bill and low congressional approval ratings would help him upset Deutch, widely seen as the front-runner. He sought to do what Republican Scott Brown did in Massachusetts when he won the Senate seat held for nearly a half-century by Democrat Edward M. Kennedy.

Lynch lambasted the health care overhaul as a government takeover and the gutting of Medicare, while Deutch told voters it would provide immediate relief.

Lynch had also slammed Obama's stimulus bill as doing little to help the economy and called the president's timetable to withdraw troops from Iraq "moronic."

Deutch said he would have voted for the health care overhaul and the stimulus bill and supports Obama's Iraq strategy.

Please, Goopers, please keep running AGAINST health care reform.

It's a winner, yes, it definitely is. When America sees how desperate you are to preserve the profits of the corrupt... er, I mean altruistic insurance industry, and how you want to cover up... um, I mean assist in the creation of "wealth" which your "financial innovations" accomplished during the Second Great Depressio.... If November goes badly for the thugs I think we will see some major rifts open up. The few remaining Republicans in elected office will absolutely ditch the Tea Party morons and then they will start to rail against Fox news as well. Sarah Palin will be as useful as a football bat and hopefully her star will begin to fade.
The truth is the course that the Republicans are on now cannot be sustained no matter what. If they have success in November it will only prolongue America's agony but make no mistake, it will come to a halt sooner or later. You can't lie about everything all the time and keep getting away with it. Even if you have a cable news network in bed with you.
Their rhetoric and policies are unpalattable to most Americans.
Let's end this sooner rather than later!

Wow! You won a special election(low turnout) in one of the most liberal voting districts in Florida.
But wait, in the November election there will be a much higher turn out and then we'll see if this election has the same results.
Latest AP poll shows Obama's approval rating has slipped to a new low after his victory on health care.
Poll says 49 % of people now approve of the job Obama is doing — & only 44 % like how he has handled health care and the economy. His overall approval rating is down from 53 %last month.
The numbers are worsening for congressional Democrats, too.
For the first time this year, about as many Americans approve of congressional Republicans as they do Democrats, 38 % to 41 %. Neither has an edge when it comes to the party voters want controlling Congress. I can’t wait till November elections.

And what's going to happen in November? Do you have some bonafied info from Fox? Let me clue you in clown, the country doesn't see things the way you do, and since you brought up Obama's poll numbers, show me a single Republican in this county who polls higher than him. Should be easy right? you have thousands to choose from, I got one guy.
You're just another conservative who got his ass handed to him.

The beginning of the comeback...America may be returning to its senses.

1) Deutch elected almost 2:1 in Florida
2) Health Care passes
3) Stock market up 3000 points since inauguration...market rally is continuing...
4) Jobs have gone from negative 700,000/month to positive gains per month.
5) On Financial Reform, Democrats win either way it goes
6) Obama gets Nuke deals to aid non-proliferation
7) Sotomeyor and another liberal justice in process before the election
8) three of the first four major companies in earnings season have posted better
than forecast earnings results, guidance for next quarter have been raised, and they have said they expect to begin HIRING.

Watch the polls change as the economy strengthens. Looking forward to a liberal November.

The teatards lose more credibility. They were looking for an upset and they lost. Get used to it tards because it is only going to get worst for you in November. HCR passed and now it look like Finance reform will pass too. See Scott Brown did not stop us!

Michael Medved, the zombie looking Republican commentator said on the Ed Show that this was "very disappointing."

62% to 35% in a district with a well-financed Republican opponent, in the first election post HCR. I would call that a double digit blowout!! The Republicults better scary up a new religion and some better lies. Oh wait, I forgot. If you're alienated and angry at the elites. If you think the corruption on Wall Street is too much to bear. If your grievance has got you ready to scream and protest. They have a tea party religion for you. Good work Frank Luntz, Dick Armey, Mitch McConnell. The masters of manipulation still believe they can turn this ocean of discontent and rage away from the Democrats and onto the teas. Then onto the Republicults.

One down...We have to stay strong. No resting on our laurels. It's the tortoise and the hare. We are the tortoise. Slow and steady will win in the long run. We're in it for the long haul.
