Michelle Obama & Jill Biden In Haiti: Workwear And Converse Hightops (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 6/13/10   Updated: 5/25/11

Michelle Obama and Jill Biden made a surprise visit to Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday morning. Read all the details of their visit and meeting with Haiti's President Rene Preval and his wife Elisabeth Debrosse.

For the occasion, they wore appropriately casual clothes. Obama wore a navy button-down with gray slacks and navy flats. Biden wore a white blouse with khakis and black high-top Converse. Dr. Biden was last seen sporting sneakers (with a skirt!) during a trip through Jordan. Mrs. Obama is known for her purple Converse.

The first lady will later continue on to Mexico.

Comfortable in Converse hightops? It's mandatory for (non-natives of) cobblestone streets! Those stones will go right thru high heel and kitten shoes

This is reallly poor taste. Nothing about their visit or their outfits has a thing to do with fashion - for good reason. Why isn't coverage of this visit in the World section?

LLisa, I think you should take your complaint up with HP instead of rumbling the style section. I have a problem with the "face off" bit headline for Michelle's visit to Mexico. Actually, I think HP is getting a bit tabloid which I don't like at all.

So what?

Talk about Haiti and what is being done to help those poor people!

NOT their clothes.

Really you seem to amaze me....forget about the purpose of the visit talk about the clothes on the
back of Hait's first lady who is vicarioulsy responsible for leaving haiti mass impoverished

the clothes on her back could probably feed many few mouths right now but I presumed she would have got it costumed made just because America is visiting...She is not helping the cause of Haiti wih this particular outfit my friend!

no need to get so agitated...perhaps mssreader sees the APPROPRIATENESS of dressing casual under such circumstances (as the journalist wrote here)...this IS the style section...it also highlights where one can READ ABOUT what she DID in Mexico when meeting its leaders...a simple click does wonders

and if there's an issue, write THE FIRST LADY HERSELF...not HP

Calm your nerves. Perhaps the comment was made because it is the STYLE section. Seriously, do you go on this rant when you see anyone with money dress well? How many mouths could your clothing have fed? How many mouths could the cost of your computer and internet service have fed? Did you take half of your meal last night, bag it up, and feed to someone in need? I'm not saying Haiti's first lady is right for any decisions that left Haiti as it were prior to the earthquake (especially since she doesn't make law), but mssreader is entitled to express her thoughts without someone jumping down their back. YOU amaze me. Woosah for real.

Why are their outfits being commented on? Many men went, does anyone remember what they wore? Was it a topic of conversation? Why does every article of women somehow get back to what they are wearing? What about what they are DOING?

As far as commenting on internal politics, bad idea. It's not about politics, it's about helping the people that are hurting.

They are both doing an excellent job as FLOTUS and SLOTUS!
I love those ladies.

How our country can help a country that condones modern day slavery, is beyond me. I do not hear Michelle of Jill address this ancient concept! This practice must be stopped before anymore American taxpayer dollars arrive at Haiti's door. It's an insult to American blacks.

When America helps a county (especiallky after a natural disaster) it has little to do with internal problems be it modern day slavery or the slew of social problems our own country faces. Instead, it is about helping the hurt & destitute simply because they need it right then and there.

Hunger knows no policy or correctness.

Well said!

actually american blacks see helping haiti as atonement for new orleans. during disasters needy people don't need to be preached to.

I'm so glad and so proud that both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden traveled to Haiti together. Somehow, it just seems like the best thing our first and second Ladies could do to build a better bridge to any people in any land because their presence underscores the severity of the situation, but also the hope that although today is not promised, tomorrow still provides possibilities.

It also makes sense to me since both women are educated and have worked with under-served populations in the past, thus could carefully analyze and provide a unique perspective on what must be done to help our neighbors in need.

No frills no fancy stuff, just plain, no big jewelry nothing, simply dressed for the occasion. She has class. The picture reminds me of the times when Lady DI traveled the world to bring attention to causes. She would never overdress either.

you represent us well Mrs Obama and Dr, Jill Biden and thanks for all you do on our behalf
