New MacBook Pro: 2010 Update Includes Better Speed, Graphics, Battery, Apple Claims

New Macbook Pro Update

First Posted: 06/13/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:10 PM ET

Apple has unveiled updates to its MacBook Pro line of computers. The new features will include faster processors, better graphics, and improved battery life, according to an Apple press release.

MacRumors summarizes the key new MacBook pro offerings:

The new 13" MacBook Pro models carry a 10-hour battery, while the new 15" and 17" models are claimed to carry 8-to-9 hours of battery life. Apple has also introduced new high-resolution displays for its 15" MacBook Pro, offering a standard 1440x900 glossy screen with options for 1680x1050 screens in glossy (+$100) or anti-glare (+$150).

Apple claims that its new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models, which will now carry Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs, are "up to 50 percent faster than the previous systems." The Core 2 Duo will still be standard in the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The 13-inch MacBooks start at $1199, 15-inch model at $1799, and the 17-inch model at $2,299 (which is $200 cheaper than it had been).

Apple last updated its MacBook Pro line in June.

Now if only they'd update the sharp-edged, wrist-slashing aluminum chassis everyone complains about. Round the thing off a bit. Worst design decision ever.

Well, I guess that this pretty much proves that there is an Apple bias at Huffpost tech. I mean, this is a processor/graphics update on an existing product design. The battery life, if if plays out in real use, is no doubt attributable to better power management on the chips since there is no mention of a new battery tech or case change. The new prices are competitive only in comparison to other Apple laptops.

Has there been comparable coverage when Dell or H-P or Acer or whoever comes out with a whole new design, much less a processor upgrade? No.

You just don't get it, do you?

Its about time! By their previous release schedule, this should have happened in February. But with the iPad release and so forth, I guess it took an extra 2 months. In any event this is great news, and the end of a very long wait. Off to the Apple Store I go!

Argh! I just got a refurb Mac Book Pro 2 weeks ago. I should have waited!

I know the feeling. I bought one in mid-Feb. But of course, they don't give you much of an advanced release date so people like us don't hold off.

For what its worth, the new machine's may be a bit more souped up, but it doesn't seem like its probably a radical improvement.

Thank you, thats true, and the one I got is really way more powerful than I even need it for. I record audio, lots of audio, and this thing always flies.

I upgraded from an old 1.5 Ghz Powerbook that was lonnng in the tooth years ago.

But,but but ... it's 4 times the price of an iPad and that was the best thing since sliced bread ?

The difference between a Harley and a BMW 7 series is also about 4 times. Different products for different purposes.

Is it just me, or does HuffPost really get off on Apple stories..one would think there weren't any other technological stories out there worth talking about. This was just wasted space.

THey do. It is completely obvious that they are either getting paid for it, or are such unabashed shills that they are OK with doing it for free (which is stupid).

This is actually a problem with tech journalism today in general. The "journalists" and "editors" have so little impartiality because they are fans at heart and are so unprofessional that they don't care.

Go to any Apple unveiling and you will see the reporters clapping and cheering as much as the masses. Go try that with the White House press corps....

I am sorry for you. You have not received the gift. Perhaps someday you will, and you will find that faith in Apple will redeem your pathetic existence.

Macbooks are good computers albeit a little pricey.
Mine has XP and Ubuntu on it as well and has been very reliable, but is in the shop now after spilling wine on the keyboard.
If you don't want the Apple price then go on ebay and find yourself a refurbished Lenovo (IBM) T-60 or T-61.
IMHO they are the best bang for the buck, very durable, have a ton of features (especially peripherals) and can be found for $600-700.

Yep $1200 is way too much. If you are technical savvy, what you can do is take a regular PC/Laptop and install OSX on it. Just google "OSX86" or check out www.insanelymac.com.

$$$$$ these just are not worth it. I've been pricing laptops and the specs on the apple models just don't do it. the 15" should not cost more than 1200.00 No usb 3.0? esata? 5400 rpm? at 1200.00 you would be a sucker. at 1500 or more your an *^&^$%

It's been a long time coming, and while the new updates aren't quite as exciting as a brand new design, those of us looking for an upgrade will really welcome the improved specs.

As great as today's MacBooks look, it's interesting to remember that they weren't always so sleek. Here's a photo tour of some of today's MacBook predecessors!

I agree $2000 is wayyy too much. I bought a $500 Lenovo 2 years ago and I challenge these MacBooks to be faster and more feature-laden than that computer. They look slick and are put together well, but they're just not 2010-spec, they're beautiful on the outside but boring as hell on the inside.

Your $500 Lenovo doesn't have a Core i5 or i7 which makes much slower than the Macbook Pros that do. (And Macs have faster frontbuses and DDR3 RAM and dedicated video cards with 256 or 512 GDDR3 RAM (which I am willing to bet your Lenovo doesn't)) You are just an idiot you know that, saying that a 2 year old box that was cheap could be "faster" then a premium box from now. Also the base price for a Macbook Pro is $1199 however that is with a Intel Core 2 Duo. The Next model up is $1799 for a Core i5 which is not $2000. Plus they will cut price but you are a MS drone. So why even bother to comment. :)
