Message In A Bottle From China Found By Aussie Father And Son (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/14/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:10 PM ET

An Australian father and son have found a mysterious message in a bottle, apparently sent all the way from a Chinese village.

Why would anyone send a message in the bottle in the age of electronic communication? Well one clue, as the Aussie father notes, is the bottle's strong smell of whiskey.

People should be discouraged from throwing garbage into the ocean. This could've easily been swallowed by a whale or other marine animal, potentially causing a painful death. This message in a bottle stuff might seem fun or romantic, but it's really just irresponsible.

Great story -- but the editorial point of view seems to take the fun out of it. This was really something fun to have happened to this kid. A throwback to sometime way back when -- whatever, I think it's a cute story.

Yeah, I also thought the POV in the piece (& of HuffPo), was a bit odd.

Why would digital communication preclude placing a message in a bottle? If they really felt they needed an angle on the piece, I can think of a few that make more sense than implying the sender was too drunk to use email or a cell phone.

The way stamp prices keep rising, I may have to try that. Uncle Sam...look for my taxes next year in a old Mountain Dew bottle. My taxes are in the mail!!! er, I mean...stream.
