Whitney Houston Birmingham

popeater.com:

Her fans may always love her, but catty reviewers across Britain aren't exactly singing Whitney Houston's praises following a bumpy return to the stage Tuesday night in rough-and-tumble Birmingham.

Invariably, every negative review included some variation of "Houston, we have a problem," but when they began describing the singer's vocals and overall stamina

Sad............

I don't want to be mean here. I was never ever a Whitney fan, but that said she did have a set of pipes. I just find it very hard to be sympathetic with someone who really did have it all and was dumb enough to get into crack addiction. How could ANYbody be that dumb?!

Houston was really great in the past. Her voice and personality was unbeatable. It is so sad that she is now in this state, and all those drugs have taken a toll on her. Houston is yet another start who has fallen victim to drugs - you either die from it, or become a human being who is unable to function.

As you can tell, her platinum cd went over well because it was done in a studio where they can enhance vocals. Instead of touring that's where they need to put her, back in the studio. She probably needs the income from touring though. She's eaten up a lot of her financial career.

There's no way for her team to deny these stories now. Every country is not lying. Clive Davis must be humiliated.

Hang in there Whitney......you've still got a chance to recover despite what critics say.

What she needs to do is sing softly. She wipes out when she tries to do the big operatic notes she used to do, so she needs to avoid them, unless she has a very big recovery of her physical presence.

That boy from Taiwan really serenaded Whitney Houston with her most romantic song. Maybe he'll ask her on a date when he gets a few years older.

Whitney Houston's fans just want to be sure she gets herself in top physical shape before an aggressive touring schedule takes it's toll on her, and also to be confident she won't be taxed by addiction, which would undermine her come-back.

She needs a combination of encouragement as well as care to keep her on track. She was good, but not all there. She shouldn't get tired so easily, and if she does, maybe she needs to do what other entertainers do and get a personal trainer.

Everyone know she has more power in her voice and more vitality and we have reason to expect more from her. We'll see stronger performances in the future.

This is what happens when you smoke crack. I look forward to many more embarrassing clips like this.

I'd say her voice was stolen by a little Asian kid.

Sad - she was a great talent, dragged into the gutter.

If you mean her voice was stolen by Charice, then yes, but Lin Yu Chun is not as good.

Whitney Houston's voice, in its prime, was an amazing natural instrument. As a classically-trained singer, I'm aware that time takes its toll on the body, of which the voice is a part, mandating that one take good care of him- or herself. A history of substance abuse further complicates the picture for Ms. Houston. Not that she should stop singing or that she won't get some gigs, but I'm afraid her ship has mostly sailed. I don't wish to be a bearer to bad news, but the airwaves are now dominated by the likes of pop divas, Beyonce and Mary J. Blige, etc. I'll always remember the gift that Ms. Houston once had as I watch "The Bodyguard" for the umpteenth time, but time does march on.

Beyonce can't sing half as well as Houston could.

Charice sings Beyonce better than Beyonce (especially live) and can sing the Whitney songs that Whitney can no longer sing.

I agree.Aesthete. I've listened to clips from Oz and Birmingham. She's had some time to train prior to the tour, and the voice as it was, is no longer there.

For pure drama "I Will Always Love You" is great. The range that Whitney used to be able to show was really over the top. The little kid in Taiwan has come pretty close to that same drama. But, if you want to hear the song the way it was written, Dolly Parton wins hands down. Very simple and wonderful in that! Dolly, beyond her performance work (great) wrote and writes great songs.

...not to be "disloyal" to Whitney, but I do agree that Dolly Parton sang it better. Whitney "oversings" it.

A remake - of any kind - tend never to be as good as the original.

The voice is an instrument. If it it not tuned and exercised DAILY it cannot be sustained. Whitney sounds like her vocal cords or voice box are damaged. Her low tones are very weak as her high tones are basically gone. Even when Whitney tries to sing a song in a lower key, it still sounds off. Whitney could probably use a really strong vocal therapist and a vocal coach to help her restructure her songs.

I would say her voice is cashed.

People just love the whole story of the ride up and down and the redemption after the fall from grace(which in this case is a chasm of bad choices a mile long). I just think perhaps it might be more graceful to find a new way to relate to the music industry than try to perform live

Her appearances on "Being Bobby Brown" were the kiss of death for her career, along with the drugs. Will anyone who saw her in her kitchen saying "Kiss my a**!" ever really forget it?

She had a gift and she chose to squander it in a very public manner. She cannot expect people to forget any of this, especially because her singing is so limited compared to what she was able to do pre-downfall.
