Scoring free stuff at nice hotels is a rare occurence (hello, $10 bag of mini-bar peanuts!), so when a classy establishment like the Crowne Plaza pays guests to embrace green energy, we get a little bit excited. The chain's Copenhagen hotel offers guests free meals for pedaling stationary bicycles to power generators.

Where do good ideas go?
At least ten years ago my son at age nine said all exercise bikes should be rigged to generate electricity, even if it only powered one lamp or the TV.
Not to make too big a stretch, but there were perfectly functional electric cars more than 100 years ago. I have a 1919 book called "The Boy Mechanic" (book III) which gives complete plans for making an electric motorcycle out of spare parts typically found on an average farm. And the boys were obviously assumed to be able to build such a vehicle just with common sense and a modest mechanical flare.
Yet today GM is still promising a working electric car some time in the near future and no one will even considered hydrogen or electric cars unless they can go 300 miles on a charge.
Who drives 300 miles in one day? Answer: No one, except maybe once or twice a year. I am almost certain 99% of Americans drive fewer than 100 miles a day, and most less than 30. The refusal to produce a cheap, non-fossil-fuel vehicle for the past 50 years is outrageous, no matter how many executives, attorneys, marketing wizards and government officials tell us otherwise.
Why do we allow this to happen? Profit for a handful of millionaires is NOT the only important thing to a society. Really, it isn't.

Govt bureaucrats should be hooked to these. We might get our money's worth out of them.

LOL, been saying this for years. So many ways to harness our own energy.

As an avid biker I'm a little ticked that I'm paying to power my computer. What a great idea.

Apply this to the SF homeless biking for energy for free ____ (fill in the blanks), and many of the city's
problems are solved.

I am guessing they do not get alot of handicapped guests. This is discrimination at its worst.

Can't please everyone. Handicapped people get the better parking spots.

The hotel on Gilligan's Island has been doing this for years. They had a similar scheme in Bedrock, but that was before electricity.

There's also an edpisode of Spongebob Squarepants where Mr. Krabs powers his jellyfish factory by hooking it up to a bicycle.

I totally thought of this years ago when I went to the gym!! If they hooked up the bikes and treadmills, I would guess that could power some lights at least.

That is a fantastic idea!
