Danny Glover Arrested

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Actor Danny Glover and 11 others have been arrested during a labor union protest at the Maryland headquarters of a food service company.

Montgomery County police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks says Glover and others stepped past yellow police tape and were asked to step back three times at Sodexo headquarters. When they refused, Starks says officers arrested them.

The dozen were issued citations for trespassing and let go. Starks says they face a $1,000 fine or 90 days in jail.

Starks says organizers told police beforehand that some would risk arrest.

The Service Employees International Union was protesting what it calls Sodexo's unfair and illegal treatment of workers. Sodexo says the union was spreading misinformation.

A publicist for the "Lethal Weapon" actor declined to comment.

Why don't more Hollywood celebrities have Danny Glover's dedication and courage?

A Hollywood actor puts his assets on the line for a cause he believes in. How refreshing!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and he did nothing wrong so Danny Glover is in good company.

there is a way of protesting that doesn't get you arrested. probably not in selma, alabama without a troop escort. but in any event, it seems mr. glover got the attention he was looking to garner for his chosen cause.

Hat's off to Danny Glover for this. His high profile arrest successfully drew attention to the cause which otherwise likely would have flown under the radar.

So okay, Bilderberger Danny Glover sent in as a dido head to quiet things down (or sweep things under the rug fast). FACE IT AMERICA. WE'RE HEADING FAST TOWARDS FASCISM! OOPS! We're already there.

Labor unions are always one of the first targets under a totalitarian state, os Glover is actually highlighting the union cause and not sweeping it "under the rug."

People are just ignorant when it comes to unions. Most people now have been raised under the Reagan-Bush school of thought, which is to make money anyway you can and blame the worker when you don't make enough. My husband was a pipe fitter working in the shipyards in MS. When conditions were unsafe, he called his union steward to make things right...that was the 70's. In the "new" America, all workers are bad, all corporations are good. Simple, ignorant, straightforward "facts" for a generation of intellectually-lazy, politically unsophisticated cretins. The idea of a safe workplace, a living wage, and loyalty have been replaced by sweat shops and gun-carrying fools who think that ANY government regulation is bad, even the things that are good for the people.

Danny you can achieve your dream...just hop a plane to North Korea.

Free unions are OUTLAWED in North Korea. In fact, non-state controlled unions are typically banned in Stalinist states. Thus, your remark makes little sense.

The ability for workers to freely collective associate is a hallmark of an open society. But isn't it amazing how right-wingers are against such associations? What about you? What is the point of your remark?

because I believe the old saying "Money is the root of all evil" .. has ALOT of merit I am considering other 'isms .. the next evil additive would be laziness and wastefulness * .. this system that has ruled the world since tribes began to trade outside their turf has MAJOR ** difficulties in the industrialized modern world .. Revolutions to work (in the long haul) need to be done peacefully .. work on that ALL

* coda - this is duopoly - some folk wish to be the chief of the minions and deserve steak over hamburger for their brain power .. and .. some folk wish to do nothing and are happy with hamburger but their home needs to be heated & cooled to feel just right
** coda - skate environmental and social ramifications of business decisions for quick profit .. that old saying (actually new saying) "private profit and public debt"

Yep Greg, you have all the right elements there to have made a GREAT comment. But you left such large gaps in the logic between your points that they are incomprehensible, at least to me. I think that you need to remember that you are not addressing the local chapter of the Mensa Society and are, instead, addressing just another bunch of folks. Relax, take easy, talk about Danny Glover, a man to respect.

This is really a shameful bit of journalism when it comes to WHY Glover was protesting and what he was protesting about. I am not in a position to say whether the charges in this link below are accurate but at the very least, they should be mentioned. This company has more on its plate than merely union issues. I guess this is what happens when journalism goes tabloid.

It's also about standing up for racial equality.

" In February 2001, 10 black Sodexho employees sued their employer for racial correspondence discrimination in its hiring and promoting practices. The class-action lawsuit, originally filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, claimed that African-Americans were denied advancement in the company in favor of white employees with less seniority or less experience. Sodexho denied the charges.

By October 2003, the lawsuit had grown to include 2,600 current and former black managers. The company told the Associated Press that $1 billion dollars is at stake.

Congress has recently been scrutinizing large class-action lawsuits like this one, and Sodexho's attorneys urged the Supreme Court to block the case. On Oct. 6, 2003, the Supreme Court refused, without comment, to block the case from moving forward. " http://projects.publicintegrity.org/wow/bio.aspx?act=pro&ddlC=55

Frankly from what we have seen in the Supreme Court of late, I am surprised.
