Oklahoma Students Shocked When Limousine Repossessed On Prom Night

First Posted: 06/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:10 PM ET

When a stranger showed up prom night and drove away with the limousine they had rented, a startled group of Oklahoma high school students thought it was being stolen. Concerned parents called the police on the limo thief, only to discover he was a repo man sent by the bank to repossess the limousine.

After struggling to pay back a loan, the limousine rental company worked out a deal with the bank so that their vehicles wouldn't be repossessed. According to Galaxy Limo owner Jim Nicolotti, the repo man was never informed that the repossession had been canceled.

KTLU reports from Jenks, Oklahoma.

One never knows what to expect these days when out for an evening on the town. LOL I do feel for the kids, though.

Pay the loan. How simple is it? If you can't afford the limo, don't go into the limo business.

Well you see we're in this thing called a recession. Now, during such times people usually don't just waste a bunch of money on a limo if they don't really have the money for it. A quick search and I believe this company has been in business for 15 years. I imagine that during this time they were doing fairly well and could make the payments on the loan, but things change.

In short...it is not always as simple as "just pay it" when things are the way they are.

My point is still valid. During the height of the economic boom, most Americans had a negative savings rate, and as always, most American small businesses fail. Ironically, most Amish businesses (95%) don't. Perhaps it's our approach to life that we're in this predicament. Too many people--businesses included--live on credit.

And Repo men wonder why they are so despised. I know they have a job to do but that was just heartless and mean and made people suffer who had nothing to do with the loan on a night that they were to remember for life as a good NIGHT.

That is all

Aw this is nothing, here in Florida years ago there was a CRUSIE SHIP repo'd as it left port with passengers aboard!

I have GOT to see the story on THAT one! Link?

Unfortunately this type of thing is getting more common in our slumping economy. There has never been a greater influx of repossessions in history (i.e. http://repofinder.com). Until the jobs come back it's just going to get worse too.

Repossession on prom night is a stunt designed to get publicity.

Had the Oklahoma Militia been formed by now, this all could have been averted. All prom-goers could've been packin' heat.

Good thing they weren't. The repo men are always heavily armed. if one of the students, acting on the reasonable belief that his car was being stole, had tried to be a hero and stop him, he could have been killed. Under an obscure 150 year old federal law, he is shielded from prosecution . Totally shielded, can't be tried , can,t be sued, can,t even be forced to say TS.
