Iranian Cleric: Promiscuous Women Cause Earthquakes

SCHEHEREZADE FARAMARZI   04/19/10 02:35 PM ET   AP

Mideast Iran Montazeri

BEIRUT — A senior Iranian cleric says women who wear immodest clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes.

Iran is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, and the cleric's unusual explanation for why the earth shakes follows a prediction by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that a quake is certain to hit Tehran and that many of its 12 million inhabitants should relocate.

"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Sedighi is Tehran's acting Friday prayer leader.

Women in the Islamic Republic are required by law to cover from head to toe, but many, especially the young, ignore some of the more strict codes and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back that show much of the hair.

"What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?" Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon Friday. "There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes."

Seismologists have warned for at least two decades that it is likely the sprawling capital will be struck by a catastrophic quake in the near future.

Some experts have even suggested Iran should move its capital to a less seismically active location. Tehran straddles scores of fault lines, including one more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) long, though it has not suffered a major quake since 1830.

In 2003, a powerful earthquake hit the southern city of Bam, killing 31,000 people – about a quarter of that city's population – and destroying its ancient mud-built citadel.

"A divine authority told me to tell the people to make a general repentance. Why? Because calamities threaten us," Sedighi said.

Referring to the violence that followed last June's disputed presidential election, he said, "The political earthquake that occurred was a reaction to some of the actions (that took place). And now, if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to confront such a calamity but God's power, only God's power. ... So let's not disappoint God."

The Iranian government and its security forces have been locked in a bloody battle with a large opposition movement that accuses Ahmadinejad of winning last year's vote by fraud.

Ahmadinejad made his quake prediction two weeks ago but said he could not give an exact date. He acknowledged that he could not order all of Tehran's 12 million people to evacuate. "But provisions have to be made. ... At least 5 million should leave Tehran so it is less crowded," the president said.

Minister of Welfare and Social Security Sadeq Mahsooli said prayers and pleas for forgiveness were the best "formulas to repel earthquakes."

"We cannot invent a system that prevents earthquakes, but God has created this system and that is to avoid sins, to pray, to seek forgiveness, pay alms and self-sacrifice," Mahsooli said.

For all the apologists. Do a little reading on the political institution that is the national Friday Prayers. This isn't some random ol' cleric; and Ahmadi's engineering skills are arguably overrated. Nonetheless, earthquake talk is nothing new: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4346945.stm

I would sense another ulterior motive behind moving the capital were that ever being seriously discussed, though.

Sorry if that was too nuanced and not kneejerk enough. The truth may be found in the middle, but STOP rationalizing the hardliners and being vehicles of their concerted propaganda. Please.

The real story here is not that an Iranian cleric used a scare tactic to enforce compliance with religious orthodoxy, Surely that is standard practice with other religions. No, the real story is how the media echo chamber has picked up this non-story as a subtext to confirm the neocon talking point that "the mullahs are irrational, and ergo MAD doesn't apply"

BTW, Ahmadinejad is a Civil Engineer with a background in soil mechanics and tunneling. So to conflate the ramblings of a cleric with the considered opinion of an engineer is disingenuous.
11:30 AM on 04/21/2010
"considered opinion of an engineer"?????
Who is more out of touch with reality, you or the mullahs is debatable.
Back to reality.

Ahmadinejad, is a religious fanatic ( and a former military interrogator) who lost his marbles long ago..

Some examples of this luna-c.
1.U.N. speech:
"Ahmadinejad's said he was surrounded by a light while speaking at the UN and the world leaders stared at him "as if paralyzed."

2. AhmadJihad quote: Our revolution’s main mission is to pave the way for the reappearance of the 12th Imam, the Mahdi. We should define our economic, cultural and political policies on the policy of the Imam Mahdi’s return.”

3. Ahmad drew and distributed a map depicting the route this 12th Imam will rake thru' Iran upon his return.
Considered engineer forsooth!.

He may have strange religious convictions, as do many other engineers. His engineering opinions about the likelihood of a seismic event in Tehran and its devastating effects has nothing to do with religion.
06:13 PM on 04/21/2010
Yeah OK, so he knows different types of dirt and how to dig with a shovel. OOPSY DOO.
civil engineering in soil mechanics doesn't make him a Seismologists.
But since I am an engineer too, my opinion must surely matter as well.
** How about shoving AhmadiJihad's garbage up his own tunnel!?
** And secondly, leave them sexy Persian broads alone.
Just expressing my opinion here, thats all ;)
08:52 PM on 04/21/2010
If you were also president of Iran and had the population density data, building code date information, car traffic data and fault line locations and movements, why not, as an engineer you probably come to the same conclusions about the risks.

You are only to hateful of him personally and that's not good for your health. Let's face it, he is not aware of your feeling, the only person who is suffering is you!
06:50 AM on 04/21/2010
Now this even most of you religious people find irrational, even ridiculous (which it is). But when it comes to your own superstition you fail to see how irrational, and yes ridiculous, that is. How can a thinking person have such double standards? If it was only about helping people to have the strenght and courage to live their lives well, I wouldn´t bother and a little self-deception wouldn´t be so harmful. But when religion is a source of oppression and lot of other problems and it boils to the point of "my superstition is better than yours, convert or die", rational people have to question this dangerous absurdity.

#`1 ~ Invent a fictitious threat, claim you have the one and only solution
# 2 ~ Blame problems on a defenseless minority.
# 3 ~ LIE outrageously, but claim to be telling the truth.

Where have we heard this type of plan before?
This is the plan of sowing FEAR, HATE, and misinformation is the plan of religion.
All religions use a similar plan, their fictions problems and even more fictional solutions differ, as do the ones they target for hatred, and some have slightly better lies, but ALL religions follow this formula.

Incidentally, so do quite a few governments and political parties.

"This is the plan of sowing FEAR, HATE, and misinformation is the plan of" MSM?
01:12 PM on 04/21/2010
Paranoid speculation that excuses away FEAR, HATE, and misinformation by IRI and postualtes a Conspiracy by the MSM or anyone else helps how? You are only crying wolf and ignore objective reality of IRI. They have arrested more journalists than anyone this year and add to that shutting down web sites and bloggers- if your concern is with 'MSM' than you might want to consider actual IRI abuse rather than speculate away your credibility. Fear, hate and misinformation are weapons unleashed upon Iranians by their lousy government on a daily basis.

Our government is using Iran as a symbol of hate to rally the people around. It's just a matter of time before the war expands. It's already wholesale slaughter in Afghanistan and Pakistan with drones killing thousands of innocent people. Do you think these people are angry? 0sama has been on the run for 10 years and no one seems to mind. Obama carried on Bush economic and foreign policy, but somehow when Obama does it, he wins the peace prize.
