Pope: I Lead 'Wounded, Sinner' Church

Pope Wounded Sinner Church

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI told cardinals on Monday that he doesn't feel alone while at the helm of a "wounded and sinner" church, the Vatican newspaper reported.

Benedict made the comment while the cardinals were celebrating the fifth anniversary of his election to the papacy, the L'Osservatore Romano said.

The afternoon paper's account of Benedict's remarks at the luncheon marking his April 19, 2005, election to succeed John Paul II did not directly mention the current clergy sex abuse scandal, which is threatening to engulf Benedict's papacy with the church's most serious crisis in recent times.

"In this moment, the pope, very strongly, doesn't feel alone. He feels he has all the cardinals near him sharing tribulations and consolation," L'Osservatore Romano said Benedict told those who sat down to the meal with him.

The pope spoke of the "sins of the church, reminding them that it, wounded and sinner, is experiencing, ever more, the consolation of God," the Vatican's official daily said.

Benedict hosted the lunch attended by 46 cardinals, who cheered and applauded him.

Sitting next to the pontiff in the ornate Apostolic Palace were two of his closest aides, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican secretary of state, and Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals and one of the pope's most ardent defenders in the face of the scandal.

The pope leads the church "with great generosity" in the face of "the challenges that the modern world poses to each disciple of Christ," Sodano said in an address to the pontiff, according to Vatican Radio.

Benedict has just returned from a two-day pilgrimage to Malta, where he met privately with abuse victims.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Italian bishops' conference has invited faithful in churches across Italy to pray for Benedict. The conference also invited the faithful to remember in their prayers both "the victims of sex abuse and those who have stained themselves with such heinous crimes."

Reports of abuse of minors by priests have piled up across Europe, including in the pope's native Germany. Benedict's own actions as an archbishop in Munich and later as a cardinal at the helm of the Vatican morals office have come under question.

Victims of clerical abuse have demanded that Benedict take more personal responsibility for clerical abuse, charging that the Vatican orchestrated a culture of cover-up and secrecy that allowed priests to rape and molest children unchecked for decades.

The Vatican maintains that Benedict, who just turned 83, has cracked down on sex abuse both as pontiff and in his tenure as a top Vatican cardinal.

In his meeting with the Maltese men who said they were abused by priests, a tearful Benedict promised the church will do everything possible to protect children and bring abusive priests to justice, according to the Vatican.

It seems that Pope Pedophilius I, the first former-Nazi Pope, accepted as the confessional of the army of pedofile clergy whose pedofile behavior he permitted to continue and expand, the catechism "I-was-only-following-orders-from-a-Higher-Authority" as a moral reason to absolve pedofilia by agents of the Church on every level and encourage the spread of pedofilia by agents of the Church to the faithful.

This Nazi Pedofile now has absolute authority in matters of morality according to the Vatican.

Strong words but fitting the crime.

Please take a look at this.
This is an account/ documentary/ video of how the catholic church murdered over 50.000 kids about 60 year ago in Canada and how they covered it up.
The survivors tell of rape, their genitalia mutilated by priests with electricity ....
These priests self appointed themselves as the legal guardians of these kids.

It’s a bit slow but well worth watching and told by the young naive now x- priest who discovered it.

So his meeting with survivors of abuse in the US not too long ago didn't move him enough to do something about the abuse? Didn't he cry then, too? Guess those were crocodile tears or something. Hey, Pope... Please note Matthew 18:6

So..the Mullah of Rome has been in office 5 years? Seems like 25. Maybe he should think about denying the priestly orders of the sex abusers the right to recruit just like bishop Brandt did to the Sisters of St. Joseph this week.

Catholics are a community - but we do not collectively sin. The Pope, on the other hand, may have ...(in fact seems likely to have) by failing to take right actions against the most grievous of sins. I think it's wise for catholics to back off viewing him or any 'mere' and petty mortal as the voice or face of Jesus. That was a misinterpretation from long ago. Jesus is perfect. No church is perfect !! HEY listen to the HATE that's parading out there in the name of churches. Try to holster your gun when you do. They are imperfect. Therefore, I as a Catholic feel no shame in the actions of a few ... I'm disappointed in the actions of the Administration. But, he (alone) has to cry for himself and his abuser priests and atone and if that means tearing down the church buildings to pay retribution to those wronged. THEN SO BE IT

Step 1: surrender the right to employ religious language or metaphors in public.
Step 2: Find a psychiatrist (non religious) to challenge your non- reality based sense of entitlement.
Step 3: Be forced to watch a catholic priest ramming it's phallus into a 10 yr. old boy's anus.
Finally: Retire, preferably after serving your time for aiding and abetting child torture!
PS NO MORE birthday cakes fashioned by famous Bavarian pastry chefs. I don't want to see your pic for a long time.

He's always hanging onto such weird, um, phallic symbols in these pics.
This one is glowing innocently. The last one was truly creepy, featuring a gollum-like crucified person.
Am sure there are many others, selected according to the occasion.

Benedict is so self-absorbed that he assures us he doesn't feel alone in this. How lovely for him, while for decades those abused by his authoritarian church have suffered abuse completely alone, unheard and shattered.

So "the challenges that the modern world" presents the church are openness and accountability for an institution that claims to be the only legitimate spokesman on earth for their crazed but "heavenly god". Well, it's about @&%$! time!!!

Hey, pope! It's not the church - it's YOU! You and your 'old men' heirarchy have finally take the 'most wonderful idea' ever and turned it into 'child molestation'. How can you live with that?

so it justifies "I allowed and helped the sinner TO wound the children around the world that were trusted in our care" ?

The one true leader of Christ's church, Benedict, is doing what has fallen upon his shoulders to do:

He is stopping the cover up, facing the criticism and standing up to the sins of the church with love and generosity for all.

This is more than our previous pope did in his tenure on this cancer that would have destroyed the church had it not been dealt with.

History will acquit Benedict. Healing may bring those who left the church back into the fold.

We can't keep going the way of extremist non-catholic christians... who, without a strong leader, lead themselves into crazy interpretations of what you can do in the name of Jesus.

Think about those creationist... how many of them are vegetarians, as Genesis instructs? They only take what they want to feed their fears and desire to control their world.... Totally, totally without Christ in their actions.

That's right. But he should have said "I lead a WOUNDING Sinner church"! The Church is in crisis as much as when Martin Luther protested what was going on with indulgences. In this case---the priests are 'indulging'. Every single church, though, is full of Sinners and perverts. It's just the RC's turn to admit it, stop it and be singled out for corruption and cover ups.
