Kenyan Embassy Mocks Tea Party Movement, Promotes Kenyan Tea With Capitol Tea Party

First Posted: 06/20/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:15 PM ET

The Kenyan Embassy is set to promote one of its biggest exports and mock the tea party movement at the same time.

According to Talking Points Memo, the embassy has sent out invitations to a tea party next week, inviting attendees to "Find out what a real tea party is like."

The event, to be held at the U.S. Capitol, will feature tea tastings, food pairings and tea leaf readings, according to the invite. Kenya's deputy prime minister is also scheduled to attend.

One of Kenya's biggest exports is tea, and it bills itself on the invite as the world's top exporter. The crop is even included on its coat of arms.

The embassy's tea party comes less than a week after Tax Day tea party protesters descended on Washington, D.C.

A recent CBS/New York Times poll found that many self-described tea partiers are also "birthers," who doubt President Obama's birthplace. According to the poll, 30% of tea partiers and 20% of all Americans believe that Obama was not born in the U.S. and therefore cannot be the country's legitimate leader. Despite the release of the president's birth certificate, many believe that he was born in Kenya, where his father lived.

At last week's tax day protests, attendees held signs saying "Go Back To Kenya" and "A village in Kenya is missing its idiot."

Jon Chessoni, the Kenyan Embassy's first secretary, struck out at birthers in a 2009 Washington Independent article about a forged copy of a Kenyan birth certificate for President Obama. Chessoni told the Independent that "it's maddness" to continue to question Obama's birthplace and that birther claims are baseless.

Jon Stewart had a guy on last night who wrote a book about the Tea Party and was a defender of it.

Stewart mentioned the popularity of Medicare among the general public.

In my best Screech Palin voice I shouted the right-wing Pavlovian non-response, "IT'S GOING BANKRUPT!"

And of course the TP guy said "But it's going bankrupt.

Okay. So no elected  Read More...

What I would like to know is this: If the birthers have seen the birth certificate, just what proof DO they want? It means that no matter what you show them, unless it's a birth certificate with Mombasa General Hospital on it, they won't believe it - and if there appears a birth certificate from Mombasa General Hospital, even if it's faked, they will believe it. Sad. The whole thing boils down to the fact that they just can't accept a Black man in the White House.

How many tea party members receive Social Security checks? How many receive Medicare benefits? How many use public parks, drive on public roads and had children in public schools? Where do they think these things come from? If you really believe that your taxes are not worth paying, please consider the alternative. To remove government involvment in your lives, you must also send back your Social Security checks, remove yourself from Medicare assistance, do not use the roads and bridges, public parks, public libraries or public schools. Or you may choose to continue with the hypocrisy. For the principled folks who populate this white wing movement, this should be an easy choice. Say no to the above "soclialist" elements of our American governmental system, or SDASU. What would make any rational person believe that a TP candidate, once elected, would actually do anything differently from those in power now? If you don't like government, are you really willing to do without government-funded benefits. The reason our founding fathers created a tax system was to ensure the public good but many TP members want it abolished. If you don't like taxes, please start by removing your presence from the above. Hey, its a start and would have an immediate effect on reducing costs. Maybe then the rest of us will buy into the fact that you actually walk the walk, not just rail and rant against a system from which you freely benefit.

Probably the ones that paid into social security their whole working lives and retired, you know that promise the Federal Gov't made to them when they took ss taxes and medicare out of their pay checks every week.

Why is it so many of you don't grasp the difference between the levels of gov't in this nation?

You do realize 95% of public roads are the responsibility of the state, county and citiy in which they exist; only interstates fall under the responsibility of the Federal Gov't.

Generally speaking, parks, libraries and public schools are also the responsibilty of the state, county and city in which they exist.

Which tax system is it you think the founding fathers created for the public good? Income tax? Social Security? Medicare?
I am really curios as to which taxes you believe they created.

The idiocy is that birthers HAVE to know that Kenyans love Obama, and they would proudly claim him if there was any remote legitimacy to their beliefs that he was born in Kenya. His father didn't even LIVE in Kenya when he born, did he? I thought he was still in the U.S. when Obama was born. Do they think that Obama's mother and grandparents traveled to Kenya while the Senior Obama stayed behind in the U.S.?
12:32 PM on 04/22/2010
Yes. Then they called Hawaii to forge BC and newspaper notices.

Its all part of a 50 year old liberal plan to overthrow America and instigate the communist revolution!
12:34 AM on 04/23/2010
shhh!! Don't tell them the plan! Now they'll be on to our communist socialism!

Get a clue!! He is not even co-herent alone inteligent!! He is not an american citizen because of his parents. They must be natural born citizens. Check the facts. He is a fraud & will be thrown out of office along with all his cronnies. They all know it. They are shaken in their boots. 20 million tea partiers say so.

Huts? Do they also dance around camp fires and boil missionaries in big kettles? I didn't see any of that in this picture of Kenya:

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a tradition in many part of Africa, driven largely by superstition and ignorance.

But FGM is decreasing in Kenya, where it is illegal, and there is an entire government ministry working towards its eradication. And the church there is also actively working to change the tradition. So give credit where credit is due.

There seems to be a certain segment of commentators here who have this notion that Kenyans all live in huts. Anyway, for those of you who only know Kenya through depictions made of it in old Warner Brothers cartoons, here's a photograph of modern Nairobi to contrast that view. You'll notice a multitude of paved streets, automobiles, and buildings made of concrete, glass and steel, but no huts:
