RIO DE JANEIRO — An 83-year-old Brazilian priest detained on allegations of sexually abusing young boys has been moved from jail to house arrest and authorities told a newspaper published Wednesday they are investigating allegations his accusers extorted money from him.

Monsignor Luiz Marques Barbosa was taken into custody Sunday after an investigation by Brazil's legislature produced allegations that he molested former alter boys, some as young as 12.

Prosecutors are weighing whether to file charges.

A police spokesman in the city of Arapiraca in northeastern Alagoas state said Barbosa was transferred from jail to house arrest late Tuesday. The spokesman did not give details, but Barbosa's lawyers argued that he should not remain in jail because of his age and because they said he did not represent a flight risk.

Meanwhile, Daniel Fernandes, a lawyer for Barbosa, told Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that two men who said they were molested by Barbosa when they were younger extorted $23,000 from the Roman Catholic priest last year. They had threatened to release a video showing him having sex with a third young man, the lawyer said.

The video was made public last month and aired on the SBT television network. That ignited an investigation into Barbosa and two other priests in his diocese.

Bishop Valerio Breda of the Penedo archdiocese said after the video's release that all three priests had been suspended and the church was conducting its own investigation.

Police inspector Maria Sousa told Folha de S. Paulo that an investigation was opened into the alleged extortion.

Calls to prosecutors and Fernandes' office rang unanswered Wednesday, a national holiday in Brazil. The police spokesman said he had no information on the extortion claims or investigation into them.

The case is the latest in a series of abuse scandals to hit the church in Latin America.

On Tuesday, Chile's bishops asked pardon for past cases of abuse. A priest in Chile was charged recently with eight cases of sexually abusing minors, including a girl he had fathered.

Also Tuesday, a Mexican citizen filed a civil lawsuit in U.S. federal court in California against former priest Nicolas Aguilar Rivera and the Roman Catholic cardinals of Mexico City and Los Angeles, claiming they moved the priest between the two nations to hide abuse allegations.

An advocacy group, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the plaintiff alleges Aguilar Rivera molested him in the mid-1990s when he was 12.

Dont doubt some victims come to seek some cash for their abuse...blackmail is always possible for clandestine behavior. That should not deter justice authorities from seeking serious prison time for sex abuse perpetraitors and those who aid and abett by covering up their repeated behaviors(Read Mr Ratzinger, Bertone, Saldona et.al.)

Are there any priests left who don't bed down young men?

It is a relief to know that the shroud of secrecy has been lifted, revealing this ancient and decrepit predator. I am grateful that his influence in society has been curtailed. He belongs in controlled custody.

Where did this priest get $23,000? Does he have a part-time baby-sitting job on the side that allowed him to save up that kind of money, or did he and others in the Roman Catholic Church use Church funds to make the pay-off?

Lots of money goes into the basket during every mass...I am sure it would not be hard for the head honcho to take it... The Catholics where I live don't question priests for heavens sake...and during this scandal they seemed to have their heads in the sand waiting for this to go away. Brainwashed totally.

Those two who got the money from the now defrocked up priest...learned ungodly behavior from a priest! Whats worse? preying on and having sex with alter boys or forcing money from the man crippled their hearts, minds and spirit. Neither are right but who is damaged and who did the damage?

He's 83 years old. Ped0ph!l!a does not suddenly manifest in individuals at an advanced age. Chances are, he's been preying on children for at least 50 years, if not more. Even if his v!ct!ms have themselves committed cr!mes, that does not in anyway excuse or justify what this man has done. Why was he not left in jail?

Huffpo,

While the boys were doubtless "altered" by their experiences with this despicable priest, the fact remains, nonetheless, that their actual role in the church was that of ALTAR boys, that is, boys who officiated at the worship carried out before the church altar. I'm an excellent editor and my rates are reasonable.

They extorted $23,000 from the Roman Catholic priest last year. (which was extortion, and wrong, but...)

Time to trace the money and find out who authorized the payment. This is a clear case of cover-up and hiding the crime.
We also would like to know if the crime was brought to the attention of anyone earlier ... say back when this pedophilia first happened, and is there any documentation? If so ... how far up the ladder did it go?

Never thought I'd say this, but 'thank you HP for not linking to the sex tape.'

One commenter linked to the tape in an earlier story about Barbosa, but his comment was deleted. The tape was blurred, and not explicit (it was a tape shown on Brazilian television, after all; how explicit could it have been?)

Yes, he does deserve to be jailed. Under what stretch of the imagination could anyone justify not jailing this pedophile? He is a criminal, plain and simple. The fact that he is a priest only makes it worse; it does not justify leniency.

The Catholic Church has always been ":The Woman Hater's Club." When is man going to finally realize religion isn't a good thing?

So long as we include secular humanism and environmentalism as dangerous religions, you might have a convert, no pun intended.

more scandal?

At what point do we all admit that we have an INSTITUTION and not an individual who is guilty? One bad apple does not make a bad barrel but a whole barrel of bad apples should at some point tell you that it is no fluke.

The spelling a grammar errors in the articles on this site are rampant.

And whenever a poster mentions it, the authors get all "huffy."
