A truly good writer can hold a reader's attention throughout the story.

I was told by several people to meddle through the first 150 pages of "The Life Of Pi" before the story and the book would start to become interesting.

I did, and the ending was pretty good. However, I promised to never read anything by this writer again because, quiet frankly, I don't want to wait for 1/3 of the story to be finished before it gets good.
