Joseph McVey, Armed Man, Arrested At Airport Where Obama Was Leaving

04/26/10 12:53 AM ET   AP

Joseph Mcvey Arrested

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — An armed man spotted at a North Carolina airport parking lot just after Air Force One departed Sunday told an officer he wanted to see the president and had a car equipped with police gear, including a siren and flashing lights, authorities said.

Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio, is charged with going armed in terror of the public, a misdemeanor, said Asheville Regional Airport Police Capt. Kevan Smith.

Security was heightened at the airport because President Barack Obama was leaving after spending the weekend vacationing in Asheville. He was headed to a memorial service for 29 West Virginia coal miners killed in an explosion.

At about 2 p.m., airport police saw McVey get out of a maroon car with Ohio plates and that he had a sidearm, Smith said. Both airport police and the Secret Service questioned him and he was taken into custody. The suspect was nowhere near the president's plane, which had just departed, and was in a rental car return lot that is open to the public, Smith said.

His car was equipped with clear LED law enforcement-style strobe lights in the front and rear dash, Smith said. The car also had a mounted digital camera in the front window, four large antennas on the trunk lid, and under the steering wheel was a working siren box. Smith said McVey was not in law enforcement.

When McVey got out of the car, he was listening to a handheld scanner and radio that had a remote earpiece, Smith said. Police said he was monitoring local agencies and had formulas for rifle scopes on a note in his cup holder. Police did not immediately elaborate on what the formulas might mean and Smith was not available to comment late Sunday.

McVey gave authorities an Ohio driver's license, but a computer check failed to show the number was valid, police said. His hometown of Coshocton is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.

When Officer Kaleb Rice asked him what he was doing, McVey told him he heard the president was in town and wanted to see him.

Rice removed the firearm and took McVey into custody. He was being held at the Buncombe County jail on $100,000 bond.

The investigation into what McVey was doing with a gun, with formulas for rifle scopes and why his car was equipped with police gear was continuing, Smith said. The Secret Service had no comment on the arrest, deferring to airport police.

A jail officer said it didn't appear McVey had an attorney.

This sounds like something out of the BLUES BROTHER read - The car also had a mounted digital camera in the front window, four large antennas on the trunk lid, and under the steering wheel was a working siren box. Smith said McVey was not in law enforcement. WOW Try Cheap Heathrow Parking

I feel vindicated and most excellent for having demonstrated more restraint and better judgment than the HP in never convicting this guy before the facts were determined.

I said immediately that it was most likely a member of law enforcement attempting to get their fifteen minutes. The description of the car is the most egregious example of whack media reporting since LHO.

Latest on McVey:

But a U.S. official told the Daily News that McVey is just a law enforcement buff, and is not considered a threat to the President. Though local authorities held McVey overnight, he was expected to be released soon.

Assuming that he does indeed get released, I expect that we will be inundated with expressions of regret by those HuffPo bloggers who hyperventilated without need (or shame).

Hey Scalia, see what your reckless language in the DC gun case encouraged? Hope you're happy; you do so enjoy killing living things including the Constitution.

The SCOTUS decision in Heller v. D.C. has no impact on this event. It was already legal to open carry a firearm in the State of N.C.
06:43 AM on 04/27/2010
They COULD'VE ruled that there is no constitutional right to carry guns; paving the way for a federal ban, like MOST industrialized nations have.

Odd info popping up about this guy:

Apparently he was arrested (but not charged) with a weapons violation previously. He was a little too eager to pull his weapon out on a couple stopped on the side of the road.

http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20100426/NEWS01/100426029

Other reports about his internet habits are cropping up. Evidently he favors law enforcement videos on YouTube. He seems to be a bit of a zealot, and he recently took a job which would entail advertising for One Million Republicans.

His Mom and step-dad live in Asheville. The folks who talk about "hobbyist cop" are on the right track. But he still needs help.
09:09 PM on 04/26/2010
Agreed. Seems he helps out with a volunteer emergency response team, but the president of the organization says they had to "clip his wings". He's nearly caused accidents by speeding to get to the scene of, well, other accidents. He pulled a gun on a couple stopped on the side of the road because the man didn't respond to him and he decided it was a domestic violence situation. Kid's going to get someone killed.

While I am playing devil's advocate, I do not condone this behavior.. law abiding gun owners and carriers are not generally going to inject themselves into situations that are not directly involving them. In a case like that, observe and call the police unless there is a direct threat of life, but it is a personal decision to act.
06:48 PM on 04/26/2010
It sounds like some people would give this guy and his type a pass for everything. (You listening RevJimIII?) If he had shot at the President and missed they would try to find a legal sounding way to justify the shot. (Some 2nd Ammendment claim) Hell, to go a step further if he fired and hit the president they'd try to find a way to justify that while secretly (or not) rejoicing.

If you're back from feeding the horses Rev. I'm sure you'll understand when I say to you ....and the horse you rode in on.

You are really reaching with this one with a lot of assumption. I have never and will never advocate illegal activity and/or unwarranted violence in any way. If a person commits a crime, then they should be punished in accordance with the law.
This person did not commit a crime other than maybe an outdated drivers license.

Your attitude leaves a lot to be desired, I have not once have I been less than civil in attempting to debate and discuss this issue. If you would prefer to resort to petty epithets, you are talking to the wrong person.

So how about providing an innocent and plausible reason for a man to have a police scanner, siren equipment hooked up, formulas for proper use of a rifle scope in his cupholder, a gun, and be at the same airport as the President while also having no law enforcement background or connections.

When I left here this morning there were virtually no right wing comments. Then I realized it was too early in the day for their opinion on this matter to be given to them. Rush hadn't aired.. Neither had Beck. You know they can't march without their orders.

He obviously is obssessed with authority, why else would he be monitoring police channels, have a car decked out like a cops etc.. And you get the feeling that it isn't because he loves cops.

There was a guy in my area who drove a car equipped to look like a law enforcement undercover one, he also had a fake cop uniform that he would wear at night, when he'd pull over women and brutally rape them. It's a safe bet that the NC guy has a motive to mimick the police for nefarious reasons too.
