Paul Nawrocki, Sandwich-Board Job Hunter, Finds Work After 2 Years

SAMANTHA GROSS   04/24/10 12:30 PM ET   AP

Sandwich Board Job Hunter

NEW YORK — When laid-off toy company executive Paul Nawrocki hit the streets of Manhattan wearing a sandwich board and handing out his resume, he became the face of the recession.

At the end of 2008, with the giants of Wall Street collapsing and bank accounts dwindling, this lone, mustachioed job hunter with the sign proclaiming he was "almost homeless" seemed like a mirror of a slumping nation's fears and troubles.

Nawrocki appeared on CNN and was shadowed by South American photojournalists. In a handful of weeks, he gave more than 100 interviews in TV studios and on the street. He began to think of his photograph like a Post-it note – stuck next to seemingly every article about the economy.

The world decided he was a weather vane for the nation's economic troubles. And maybe he was: Even though the attention faded, his troubles did not.

Having the eyes of the world on him didn't land the then-59-year-old any viable job interviews. His wife was sick, and keeping his health care was a struggle. He began to decide between the doctors and the mortgage.

Well, if Paul Nawrocki is a sign of the times, then times are looking up.

Because last month, after collecting 99 weeks of unemployment, Nawrocki finally found a job.

He's not the only one. While unemployment remains high, the nation added 162,000 jobs last month – the first significant job growth since the downturn began.

"It was good. It felt good," the Beacon, N.Y., resident says of his first day back at an office – 25 months after he was asked to leave his old one. "It felt like all new again because it had been so long."

Nawrocki hopes he's back on his feet after the long, dark stretch. But he knows he's still on shaky footing. The financial damage of the last two years won't just disappear.

"We're still not out of the woods," he says now. He has two mortgages on his home 70 miles north of Manhattan.

"One of our mortgages – I'm like six months behind. I don't know how I'm going to be able to catch up."

Nawrocki and his wife declared bankruptcy last year. They got food stamps. They went to food banks. They took gifts from family.

For months, he's been waiting fearfully for his mortgage company to call – waiting for a foreclosure notice, for something. But so far, nothing has happened.

In the end, his path back to work wasn't through his television appearances, but through old-fashioned networking. He went to a toy-industry fair, and a friend introduced him to the man who would become his boss. Nawrocki believes the tales of his sandwich-board days helped him land an interview.

His paycheck is nearly half the size; he had made almost $100,000 a year. And his title is a little less grand.

But the job still seems a wondrous, unlikely rescue – as though a hand had descended from the sky at the last possible moment.

"I had reached the limit, the last week," he recounted. "And they called and had me start the next week. ... Through this whole experience it's been like that. We get right to the edge, and then ..." he trails off.

And then. Hope returns.

Congratulations to Mr. Nawrocki! I hope he's able to come out from under these two years of darkness, despite his cut in pay. A relative who was out of work also found a job. We are gradually seeing better times.

Congrats to this gentleman. He must feel as if the weight of the world is off his shoulders. I am thrilled for every person who wins the battle and finds employment. 162,000 jobs were created last month and let's all hope that we see twice as much this month, and things get moving.

If job creation in significant numbers starts to take place before November, it will help the Dems and the country.

We have shaved our lifestyle considerably. It makes one understand that much of what we feel we must have is expendable, and alternatives are available which make one happy.

Please, however, do not cut off my internet service. I was disabled anyway, but a serious automobile accident one year ago has drastically cut my alternatives, so my friends on Huffpro are important to me.

First things first, congratulations to Mr. Nawrocki! It's a hard climate to find work in, so that he found something is worth celebrating.

Now, on to my "rant".

Can we start using common sense, folks? You can't claim Unemployment if you quit your job. You have to be fired (even then it's sketchy), laid off, or your business closes. If you quit, you get nada.
Now, for giggles and grins, let's say, at your job, you make $80,000 a year. You lose your job due to downsizing or whathaveyou. You go from $1500 per WEEK to $600...So, in order to "stay home and drain taxpayers" (another fallacy), you take a paycut of OVER 50%? Yeah, that would be an incentive for me (sarcasm).

For every job posting out there, there are at least 100 qualified people, but nearly 1000 applicants. Then, there are folks (like me) who find themselves unhired at "menial" jobs because they're overqualified...Yes, it is possible to be turned down for a waitressing job, folks!

So, before you go on and on, repeating political talking points, find out WTF you're talking about.

Great that he found something, and not a surprise that he found something in an area that he had previous experience.

You just have to laugh though at Repubs who seem to believe that recessions are caused by millions of people quitting their jobs overnight to go on unemployment at a fraction of what they made when they worked.

And the silliest Repub stunt is pointing out want ads in newspapers as evidence that there are plenty of jobs but no takers. Reagan pulled this during his deep recession of 1983-1984. That's the recession news reports are referring to when they say "the worst in 25 years".

There were also want ads during the Great Depression that Herbert Hoover pointed to.

This guy waited for a job in a specific industry. Well then with that rigidity he reaped what he sowed.
09:22 PM on 04/26/2010
He could've taken a job flipping burgers at McDonald's, but that wouldn't pay the two mortgages and whatever other bills he's got. His best bet to get a well-paying job was to get one in his industry using his experience. As it was, he took a 50% pay cut. But the pay cut would've been worse if he just took the first job that came along.

Funny how many people post here claiming no hope of finding a job. There are trucking companies that are hiring and have been all along, I see them in the paper every day. They even pay for your training. I guess you do drugs and refuse to quit and so can't pass the test? Have felonies? But it's not your fault, it's mine for pointing it out. Now you will tell me what political party I favor and offer one or two excuses but you won't bother to look beyond the internet for a job because the free money keeps flowing out of workers pockets and into yours. Then when it is going to run out or, more likely, only after it runs out, you will panic and grab the first crap job that comes along.

The also won't take you if you can't pass a physical. My brother has seizures. So, have fun with your blanket statements.

Congrats! My hubby and I are in similar standing - his company is farming 250 jobs out to China and Brazil and closing down his plant (after having only bought it a few years ago). (Oh, it's GE btw). There are days we feel pretty bitter and miserable, and then we realize that we have each other, our health (well we're not on death's doorstep or anything) and that there's always tomorrow - I guess we sort of "trick ourselves" into being reasonably content. But at least we're renters - all they can do is "kick us out" - no hefty mortgage debt to dog our heels if that happens - suppose that's something to be grateful for.

Here's hoping the economy really is turning around - but I'm still very dubious. I just want my very hardworking hubby to be able to find a job. It breaks my heart to see that he feels somehow, even though its not, this must be his fault. He's no hero - but he's an honest, hardworking guy who really hasn't stopped working since he got a paper route at 12 and he didn't deserve to be laid off so a giant company like GE could save a few more pennies in "cost efficiency" by farming out his and others jobs to cheap labor (*cough* slave wages) and zero environmental expenses in other countries.

Well, according to posters "babagootz" and "dontjustfollow", and others on here, you're unemployed because you want to stay at home sitting on your hide because you're too proud to look for a job and you want to collect unemployment.

Some of the haters are really unbelieveable. I'm sorry for you lose of job and I hope something will
come to you soon. Just know that there are people on here that feel and understand your loss.

That's okay. I'm still really glad for Mr. Nawrocki and my hubby and I will be fine. (And for the record - he hasn't actually started collecting any unemployment yet - they keep extending him, one month at a time - which while sounds "good" on the surface creates a whole "other" set of issues about planing for our future...)

And as for those posters you mentioned - I don't feel much of anything toward them - how can I? I don't know them or their particular circumstances. In a very general sense, I suppose I feel a little compassion (pity is a useless and self-serving emotion). To be so bitter and fear-driven that one must judge others harshly by a very narrow view who they can't know much about is not a very happy place to be. I know - I've been guilty of it myself more than a few times in my life - and when I'm doing that - ragging on others - I'm usually in a pretty dark and unpleasant place in my own life. :( Peculiar tendency of human beings to project our ugliest emotions on other people and then want to vilify them for the weaknesses we recognize in ourselves. *shrug*

Thanks for the supportive words and encouragement - it is appreciated. :)

All these commenters railing against the 'free-loading unemployed' are clearly believers in Ayn Rand-ism. Please know that her heroes were based on actual serial killers that she idolized. That is where this 'philosophy' comes from and the people who subscribe to it -- from Alan Greenspan, GWB down to the mendacious posters here should go where serial killers belong -- which is prison.
