Ben Roethlisberger Apology: 'I Have Fallen Short'

Ben Roethlisberger Apology

ALAN ROBINSON   04/26/10 07:58 PM ET   AP

PITTSBURGH — A chastened Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger accepted his six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy Monday and promised to "comply with what is asked of me – and more."

In his first comments since the NFL handed down the penalty last week, Roethlisberger apologized to his teammates and fans for his behavior last month in a Georgia bar, where a 20-year-old college student accused him of sexual assault.

"The commissioner's decision to suspend me speaks clearly that more is expected of me. I am accountable for the consequences of my actions. Though I have committed no crime, I regret that I have fallen short of the values instilled in me by my family," Roethlisberger said in the statement.

Roethlisberger was cleared of charges, but commissioner Roger Goodell cracked down on one of his biggest stars because "you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville (Ga.) that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league of the expectations of our fans."

The two-time Super Bowl winner said that while it will be "devastating" to miss games, "I will not appeal the suspension and will comply with what is asked of me – and more," he said.

"I am sorry to let down my teammates and the entire Steelers fan base. I am disappointed that I have reached this point and will not put myself in this situation again," Roethlisberger said. "I appreciate the opportunities that I have been given in my life and will make the necessary improvements."

Roethlisberger is the first player suspended by Goodell under the conduct policy who hasn't been arrested or charged with a crime. Goodell said the league's conduct policy gave him the right to impose discipline regardless of whether Roethlisberger broke the law.

"In your six years in the NFL, you have first thrilled and now disappointed a great many people," Goodell wrote. "I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity to get your life and career back on track."

The suspension can be reduced to four games if Roethlisberger completes an evaluation mandated by the league, any action that is mandated by that evaluation and he remains out of trouble. He can practice during training camp and play in preseason games, but cannot return to game action until at least Oct. 17.

Until now, he has sat out only eight games in six seasons due to injury or to rest up for the playoffs.

Goodell also said he has the right to extend the suspension if he learns of any additional problems.

Roethlisberger was not available Monday for further comment. Because he cannot work out or train with his teammates until the league clears him after behavioral evaluations, he will not take part in the team's mandatory three-day minicamp this weekend.

Roethlisberger was cleared of charges because a prosecutor said the case was not strong enough to pursue, but the quarterback was rebuked by authorities, Goodell and Steelers president Art Rooney II. Georgia prosecutor Fred Bright was especially harsh, telling the quarterback, "Grow up ... cut it out. You can do better."

Roethlisberger also is being sued in a civil case in Nevada for an alleged sexual assault that occurred there in 2008. There were no charges brought in that case, and Rooney II said it did not factor in the NFL's suspension.

This is the second such apology by Roethlisberger in three weeks. He read a similar statement on April 12 when he learned he would not be charged.

In her statement to police, the underage college student said Roethlisberger encouraged her and her friends to take numerous shots of alcohol. She was later escorted down a hallway at the nightclub, where she said the quarterback exposed himself. She said she tried to leave and went to a bathroom, but Roethlisberger followed her.

"I still said no, this is not OK, and he then had sex with me," she wrote.

Rooney was so angry with Roethlisberger he wanted to suspend him before the league acted, but didn't do so because the NFL players union could have appealed to a special master. The Steelers have since taken their first tentative steps toward reconciliation: director of football operations Kevin Colbert said the quarterback "deserves the opportunity" to rehabilitate himself.

It could have been much worse. Roethlisberger could have chosen the priesthood.

At the risk of sounding like I want to absolve all people of all personal responsibility for their actions, I want to pass along something that was floated by someone (his lawyer?) associated with the case. Is it possible that there is something post-concussion going on for BR?

I believe he suffered a concussion in the motorcycle accident - the one where he was told by the team not to ride a motorcycle and then he did without a helmet. And there were more.

So he seems like a guy who thought he was invincible. What happens when you combine arrogance with brain damage?

Coincidently, Roy Blount Jr wrote a book about some "insanity" within the Pittsburgh Steel Curtain (early 70's) entitled "Three Bricks Shy of a Full Load" (think "not the brightest bulb in the pack") that was one part hilarious and one part tragic.

I don't want to suggest a Pittsburgh cluster of brain damage - this just reminded of that something I read long ago - that the aging process hasn't been kind to the mental health of some former Steelers - post concussion, alcohol and drug fueled life styles that have resulted in insanity and early deaths.

Arusticat, you are saying the same things I've said for some time. As a matter of fact, Dr. Cyril Wecht feels the same way. Here's the link to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about that.

Thanks for the link, Rick. I am glad that the powers-that-be are including looking in the direction of a medical explanation for his behavior.

I was one of those that wanted the Steeler's to take the moral high-road and cut him for his behavior. He's a public relation's nightmare in the same way Toyota has one - and reputation is everything.

But what if the Steeler's kicked him to the curb at the same time as it was discovered that they (or the NFL) shared some responsibility for his problems? They're between a rock and a hard place.

To the Rooney family, Pittsburgh, Steeler Nation and the NFL, dump this loser.

It is true he is not a criminal until convicted, but a loser he his without a doubt.

I put my Steelers sweat shirt in storage until they wake up and do the right thing, get rid of Ben.

"I have fallen short."
Hmmmmmmmmm. Haven't I heard something like that before?
Oh, yeah!
With tears----and plenty of sincerity----Jimmy Swaggert following his bust with New Orleans hookers: "Ah hev sinned." Translation: "I have sinned."
Guess what? Old Jimmy went out AND GOT CAUGHT not too long after that tearful mea culpa.

Mike Tyson goes to jail when a young lady goes to his room at 3 AM. Later she yells rape and Ben liquors up a 20 year old, confines her to a public bathroom, uses bodyguards to keep people out and her in, is accused of rape and then he goes home.

Oh yeah, it's her word against his. Well what about the witnesses? BTW, how many witnesses were present in the Tyson case? None. The evidence points to Ben's guilt and probable cause is a very low threshold for most of us. He got a pass

Huh?? There was one witness in the Tyson case -- the girl. And she said she was raped.
There was one witness to Roethlisberger -- the girl. And she said she was NOT raped.
Game over. Drop this crap.

When Ben first came on the scene in the NFL, I really liked him. Over time he has become disgusting. He seems to have a sense of entitlement, and I think more should have been done by the police. This is the second sexual assault charge against Ben. I truly believe he raped both women, and I think he should have to face the consequences. He need to be brought down several notches. He is an arrogant pig, and I hope both women sue the hell out of him.

There seems to be an awful lot of people who think that young women never get drunk and have consensual sex. A friend and I once shared an apartment and she had a cousin who was always getting drunk and cheating on her fiance who was in the service. She'd sober up the next day wailing about how she didn't know what she was doing because she was too drunk and begging us not to tell her fiance. One day we came home unexpectedly early and caught her having an assignation in our apartment with some random dude. She was stone cold sober that time and never used the drunk excuse on us again. Point being too many young women use booze so they don't have to take responsiblity for their behavior.

She was drunk is not a defense to rape.

Being drunk isn't an excuse to claim rape either. If the DA, the GBI and the emergency room doctors all say there's not enough evidence to prove an assault occurred, sexual or otherwise, then it's good enough for me. Oh, that's right, Roethlisberger paid them all off plus he left no DNA behind unless the janitor cleaned her up too.

So men who buy drinks for young women with the aim of getting them drunk know this?

So he apologizes to the fans and the team and the NFL, but not to the girl he assulted. Jerk!

You mean the girl who had consenting sloppy drunk sex w/ him in the bathroom?

I think Ben's lawyer sounded very sincere in that statement.

Legal issues aside, there's something patently pathetic with a grown man banging drunk 20 year olds in the bar bathroom. It signals emotional immaturity on a grand scale.

Precisely...and how old is Ben now? I am sick of these arrogant jocks getting away with rape. I hope the Steelers fire the deviant.
