Ben Roethlisberger Statement: Suspension 'Devastating'

Ben Roethlisberger Statement

04/26/10 03:59 PM ET   AP

PITTSBURGH — Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's statement Monday regarding the six-game suspension given him last week by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell:

"The commissioner's decision to suspend me speaks clearly that more is expected of me. I am accountable for the consequences of my actions. Though I have committed no crime, I regret that I have fallen short of the values instilled in me by my family. I will not appeal the suspension and will comply with what is asked of me – and more.

"Missing games will be devastating for me. I am sorry to let down my teammates and the entire Steelers fan base. I am disappointed that I have reached this point and will not put myself in this situation again.

"I appreciate the opportunities that I have been given in my life and will make the necessary improvements."

I commend Roethlisberger for taking responsibility for his actions and not appealing the NFL's decision. I hope Roeth can live up to the challenge. We need more accountability in our leaders and celebrity figures and this is a good example of how it is done.

(and I'm a NY Giants fan!) Good luck to Ben Roethlisberger.

Even though Big Ben has a history of this type of behaviour, he seems sincere in his efforts to mend his ways - time will tell, but I think everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves.
