Hermes Birkin Bag No Longer Has A Wait List

First Posted: 06/26/2010 5:12 am Updated: 05/25/2011 4:15 pm

It seems that the wait list for the Hermes Birkin Bag is a victim of the recession, SheFinds reports. When Portero Luxury began advertising Birkins alongside text that read, "The Wait Is Over. Get Yours Now!" the SheFinds editors "called around to Hermes, and found out there is no more silly waiting list--they told us we could walk right in and get one today."

The cheapest styles still cost $7,000, so it's still quite the life decision...but impulse shopping just got that much easier.

I hate everything this bag stands for.

The book "Bringing Home the Birkin" by Michael Tonello (a great beach/vacation read, definitely not literature) blew up the waiting list myth a few years ago. There never was a waiting list...Hermes was just so snobby that you had to either a) be "somebody" to buy one or b) buy a few thousand dollars worth of other Hermes crap to be mysteriously told that "maybe they had one in the back" Guess the economy has made them worry more about the bottom line than the pedigree of their shopper.

Cost and status symbol aside.

That is the most impractical bag ever designed. Look at locking mechanism required to close and open the bag. What if you had an important call and your cell phone was in it. It would take you at least 10 secs to twist the metal lock, loose the complicated leather bindings and fish your phone out of that puzzle of an enclosure.

It's amazing how the economic downturn makes corporations cut through the BS and get back to basics. If there is a demand, then sell the available supply without delay.

Well, of course there's no waiting list.

At $7,000 a pop, it's not like the masses are beating down the doors to buy one. They're lucky anyone is interested.

For $7,000 I can buy a car to carry around my stuff.

I imagine that those who can afford the bag will be less interested if it is available for just anybody who can afford it. These people can be rather snobbish sometimes. Bad enough that a soccer players wife is schlepping these bags around air ports, OMG.

There's been a waiting list for YEARS, so there's no "of course" about it.

Isn't this the bag they called the "Grace Kelly" bag in the 50's, 60's, etc.

That pink bag looks like a Kelly, not a Birkin, b/c it's not a tote - but it's not as if I have vast experience with either . . .

No, they pay the makers well, and so that is good. I know a lady who lives in a rather remote area close to the Alps, and she makes a good living hand stitching these bags.

that is good to know.

Finally, they're here. I'm going to put my assistant on the Lear to get one for me, right after I pick up my key to the bridge in SF I bought so I can move it to the Isle of Manhattan. I just bought that on ebay too. Lol

That is the fugliest bag I've ever seen anyway. Money canNOT buy taste.

Ha, $7,000 for a purse is cheap as I was schooled by a friend who loves purses. Thank goodness she is able to afford her habit of buying purses I was with here when she bought a Gucci purse that cost $12,000 from Bloomingdale's.

Now try borrowing $20.00 from her and she will look at you and tell you that she is not a bank.

lol.. i am lucky enough that my friend, who also love purses and shoes, let me borrow her LV purses.
