Leo Berman, Texas State Rep., Says Obama Is 'God's Punishment On Us'

Republican Convention

Conservative firebrands were out in force in Tyler, Texas over the weekend, speaking at a Glenn Beck-headlined "Taking Back America" rally.

"I believe that Barack Obama is God's punishment on us today, but in 2012, we are going to make Obama a one-term president," declared Texas state Rep. Leo Berman (R-Tyler) according to the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Berman's extreme words were accompanied by other comments from conservative figures, including Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Tex.), who, in the height of the health care debate last month said that "demons" had invaded Washington and were causing Democrats to mislead voters about the merits of the bill.

Glenn Beck, speaking at the event, said: "Do you believe this is God's land? Do you believe our constitution was divinely inspired? Why do you believe those things?" Beck asked. "If God is with us, who can possibly stand against us? The answer is no one."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry also made an appearance and called the Tea Party an "army" that was gathering to "take their country back and send a message to this administration, to this Congress," an army that he said he was "proud to be in."

I agree God is punishing the gop. He isn't done yet. Keep backing the thieves, scallywags and carpet baggers and see how he likes it. Maybe its the gop world that ends in 2012 and not anyone else. LOL

A Tale of Two Venues (at the Oil Palace in Tyler, TX)

It was the best of whites, it was the worst of whites...

Our family is white, middle-class (2 teenage boys), conservative and went to Tyler to see Glenn Beck. Since we were already there, we decided to go to the ZZ Top concert at the Oil Palace the night before. Here is my perspective:

Worst of whites: ZZ Top Concert
aged hippies, either arrested development or failure to launch, disregard for basic public decency, no respect for property, unmannered, embarrassment, left early
The type of whites that are the sterotypical racists. Lacking true superiority; thus manufacturing it through racism. The type of whites that would look askance at any black that would dare enter their midst.

Best of whites: Glenn Beck rally
middle-aged, polite, respectful, mannered, patriotic, stayed for the whole thing and thoroughly enjoyed it
The type of whites that are wrongly sterotyped as racists. Possessing enough self-worth in their character and morals as to not need the crutch of racism. The type of whites that would welcome any person without considering their color first.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE?

The unspeakable insanity of these people leaves me completely befuddled..
Then again it is probably their objective to make me feel helpless...
Then I remember the words of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter: I am not helpless and I will not be forced to feel that I am helpless...

I believe this man may be on to something. The GOP screwed things up so bad that god had to send someone with a brain in to try and clean up the mess. I guess if you were a republican you might view this as punishment.

As a native Texan I find this profoundly embarrassing. I have family in Tyler. Geez. I've always loved this state but it's getting harder to do every day. It's become loony-land.

I feel for you. I live in Arizona.

The noisiest ones are often the most abhorrent... and these clowns have their own network to utilize.

I won't trash-talk Texas if you won't trash-talk Arizona! Well. No. Wait. That's way too hard and both our states have earned it. How about if we both trash talk our own states and become part of a new noisy group... only our group with have actual ethics, morals, integrity and intellect?

This old "cowboy" is so confused, it's a shame to see people like him getting the issues all wrong at their age.

I think they are just too lazy, it's easier for them to appear to be loyal to something they have little influence over than to admit they are wrong.

The dinosaurs went extinct with time and these old fools will be gone soon enough too, just by waiting them out.

Everyday I learn that this country is filled with dumb@sses. Totally clueless people, they should build an ark and just go somewhere. Their ignorance is tiring.

I like how succinct you are! I agree, these teabag people get all butthurt and self-righteous when people point out how uninformed they are, but not enough to actually inform themselves. That's for communists, and besides, Glenn Beck gives them all the info they need to yell and make ret@rded signs and stomp their feet like toddlers.

When I was a lad in rural Alabama, the state educational system was rated 47th out of 48. We used to say, "Thank god for Mississippi or we'd be last.

Now I read Texas is envious of Arizona's recent awarding of the most bigoted, racist, mean spirited trampler of Constitutional rights. The locals here are stunned and will stop at nothing to regain the crown of 'Primo Meskin haters'.

Even yesterday I saw the governor of Texas shot and killed a coyote. It was warranted because a close examination of the carcass found no evidence of a green card or passport.

Do the local ash-hats understand Hispanics were here long before Anglos and fought for independence, when this was a northern state of Mexico called Tejas? Do they care?

What they need to consider is Texas is nearing 50/50 Latino to Anglo and might well consider making nice instead of poking the indigenous population with a sharp stick.

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.

Isn't there a Muslim cleric who claims that women who dress immodestly are causing earthquakes around the world? Maybe these two should get together and chat.
