SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Randy and Evi Quaid were briefly jailed Monday after showing up to court two weeks late for a criminal case, authorities said.

The actor and his wife were released after posting $100,000 bail each and were told to return for a court hearing on Wednesday, the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

The couple have repeatedly failed to show up for hearings in a felony case alleging they defrauded an inn out of more than $10,000. They also have been charged with burglary and conspiracy and have pleaded not guilty.

Photos taken Monday by the Santa Barbara News-Press showed the handcuffed couple smiling as they were escorted by deputies. The Quaids spent less than four hours in custody.

Their attorney, Robert Sanger, has said the money has been repaid and the Quaids hope to resolve the case without a trial. Sanger on Monday declined to comment on the case or say why the couple didn't appear as scheduled earlier this month.

A judge ordered the couple's $40,000 bail forfeited after they missed a hearing on April 12. Arrest warrants were issued after the Quaids failed to show up the following day as well.

Randy Quaid is best known for supporting roles in films such as "Independence Day" and "National Lampoon's Vacation." He is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.

The case has been ongoing since September. A criminal complaint alleges the couple used an invalid credit card to defraud the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito of more than $10,000.

This is one of the weirder celebrity stories. None of it makes any sense.

Yes, I can see ANY non-celebrity couple being released from jail after not showing up for court dozens of times, in half-a-dozen jurisdictions. These guys are just laughing at every judge they go in front of, and they have good reason to do so.

Sounds like Randy and Mrs. Randy could go from funky to fabulous...ok...well at least get out of being so funky. Skipping out on your bills- that isn't the wisest of financial moves.

Hope someone sends him the advice I gave Lindsay Lohan last week.

His brother Dennis and I fell in love for a night, and yet Randy was famous before dennis, wasn't he?
I think so. Most of the Huffpo's are movie buffs and always answer me. Still he should call his rich friends like Rob Reiner and Paul Reiser to help him and agree to be in another film with both of them,. It would be good for all of them. This btw ( is not Shoshanna Shobaum. ha ha ).

Thinking there is more to this. Wonder how many people are prosecuted for this after they pay the bill? Usually, prosecution is dropped when the bill is paid. I'm asking myself why they skipped in the first place. Was it to protest poor service, or a disagreement with the bill etc. Im also asking myself questions about the prosecuter. Why go after this one when so many other disputes were just settled. What's the full story here? Can someone please talk to the Quades about this?

If someone who wasn't a 'celebrity' walked out on their hotel bill, for any reason, they'd be prosecuted. And if they didn't show up in court as many times as these two, they'd be in jail.

So because they tried to skip out of a $10,000 dollar bill they lost $40,000 in forfited bail money by not showing up to court. Idiots.

Want to bet the money was returned to them? Why else would they be so contemptuous of the legal system?

Maybe he should ask Clark Griswold for another $50000 loan. I don't know why they call it Hamburger Helper... It's just fine without hamburger.
