Obama Amplifies His Criticism Of Arizona Immigration Bill: 'Not The Right Way To Go'

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP)— President Barack Obama on Tuesday warned of harassment against Hispanics under Arizona's tough new immigration law, saying such "poorly conceived" measures can be halted if the federal government fixes the nation's broken immigration system for good.

Obama pledged to bring his own party along, pleading with Republicans to join in as the only realistic hope to solve a politically volatile problem.

On a day dominated by his economic message, Obama offered a fresh, stern criticism of a new Arizona law that allows police to question anyone about their immigration status if they have reason to suspect they are in the country illegally. He said it targets people who look like they might be illegal immigrants.

"Now suddenly if you don't have your papers, and you took your kid out to get ice cream, you're going to get harassed – that's something that could potentially happen," Obama said of the Arizona measure. "That's not the right way to go."

Obama's comments came on the same day that Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano were critical of Arizona's new law, and Holder said the federal government may challenge it. The president sought to step up Washington's will to get an immigration deal done.

"I will bring the majority of Democrats to the table in getting this done," Obama said in response to a question at a town hall in south-central Iowa. "But I've got to have some help from the other side."

Obama said he hoped to get a deal done "sometime soon" – a politically vague timetable in an election year with a shrinking window for legislative action.

Starting a two-day, three-state Midwestern trip, Obama's broader message was about economic revival. Back in Iowa, the state that jump-started his White House bid, Obama sought to reassure wary Iowa voters with a message he hopes will resonate in the fall elections: The economic recovery hasn't reached everyone, but progress is being made. He's not on the ballot this year, but his party's control of Congress is at stake, along with dozens of governors' seats and state legislatures.

On immigration, Obama said he wants a federal law that would secure the borders and require illegal immigrants to register, pay a fine, learn English, take responsibility for having broken the law and get in the back of the line before others who are seeking U.S. citizenship.

He said if all of those challenges are handled in one comprehensive measure, then "we can once again be a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants."

He said Arizona's law is poorly conceived, but it is equally unfair for the state to have to deal with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.

The president sought to surround himself with rural Americans in his latest getaway from the White House confines. He focused on his economic and clean energy programs as job creators, even as he acknowledged the pain and skepticism of hard-hit areas.

Despite encouraging news about an expanding economy and markets, the president told an Iowa crowd, "times are still tough in towns like Fort Madison. And times are still tough for middle-class Americans, who had been swimming against the current for years before the economic tidal wave hit."

Obama outlined his administration's goals to "create conditions so that folks who work hard can finally get ahead." They include improving schools, making college more affordable, expanding health coverage and preventing Wall Street irresponsibility, he said.

Underscoring the challenge was agriculture secretary and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, who told reporters traveling with Obama: "There's a silent crisis occurring in rural America that's been ongoing for several decades." He said the president is delivering a new framework for the "revival of the rural economy."

Obama also plans to stop in Illinois and Missouri before returning to the White House late Wednesday. Iowa and Missouri are sharply contested in virtually every election, and Republicans this year think they can snag the Illinois Senate seat that Obama held before becoming president.

After speaking first at a wind energy plant Obama made a surprise stop at a 140-acre organic farm in nearby Mount Pleasant. MogoOrganic Farm supplies food for local schools and businesses. The president then dropped by Jerry's Family Restaurant in Mount Pleasant for a cup of coffee and slice of rhubarb pie.

The president capped his day with the town hall at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.

The latest economic forecasts show some signs of progress: The nation added jobs at the fastest pace in three years last month, the manufacturing industry is growing at a steady pace, and new claims for jobless benefits have declined.

But the unemployment rate, perhaps the most recognizable economic indicator, has held steady at 9.7 percent for three months, and 15 million Americans remain out of work. By the White House's own estimates, as well as those of many independent economists, that rate isn't expected to fluctuate more than a few tenths of a percentage point through the end of 2010.

Polls suggest the president and his party are increasingly vulnerable on the economy. Democrats and Republicans each have the confidence of 44 percent of people for handling the economy, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll conducted this month. The Democrats had a 9-point advantage just four months ago and have held an edge since AP polls began asking about the issue in 2006.

Obama Amplifies His Criticism Of Arizona Immigration Bill: 'Not The Right Way To Go'.....

Neither is sitting on your hands and doing nothing when asked about what you're going to do.

This opposition to Arizona Immigration law is ridiculous. Arizona's law is a duplicate law identical law to Federal Immigration Law. The only reason for the Arizona law is that the Federal Government refuses to enforce Federal Immigration Law that currently exists.

Arizona citizens are being KILLED by illegal aliens. Both drug smugglers and other criminals are crossing the border and killing and committing other crimes in Arizona. If the Federal Government would do their job enforcing the border, Arizona wouldn't be forced to do their job for them.

Obama is not protecting and defending the citizens of the United States. By Obama ignoring the Border problem he is putting U.S. citizens in DANGER. Obama cares more about Illegal Aliens than he does about the safety of U.S. citizens.

Why won't Arizona punish employers who hire illegal immigrants? They didn't need this law to do that. Arizona citizens are also being killed by Arizona citizens, hate to be blunt - but the police don't need this law to catch murderers.

Why do you solely blame Obama and not Congress, especially the republicans there who have obstructed immigration reform?

Opposition to this law is based on it being a bad law for the citizens of Arizona.

If you weren't just like Bush, Mr Obama, you wouldn't have ignored this problem for 16 months. You're hand is forced now, handle it like a POTUS...

“Why doesn't Arizona enforce the laws that are already on the books, for example “It is unlawful to hire an alien, to recruit an alien, or to refer an alien for a fee, knowing the alien is unauthorized to work in the United States”.

Fine, prosecute, and imprison a hand full of the predominately white business that are hiring these people and the rest will stop hiring. If there are no jobs for illegal aliens there will be no influx of illegal aliens. Then there could be no implication of racism, whites oppressing browns.”

I cannot help but wonder if Governor Brewer would have signed this law if the White House had bothered to respond to the letters she sent to President Obama asking for infomation regarding the federal government's intent to provide border security. According to Governor Brewer, her requests for additional information were met with silence. Not oly did she not receive additional information, she received no response to her letters. That treatment is sure to tell the requestor that "you are on your own, don't expect any help from me." Things may well have worked out differently had the administration showed any interest in helping solve Arizona's legitimate concerns.

But, he does NOT add... It's illegal not to be here legally... And does not deny it.
02:08 PM on 04/28/2010
Does the government think this bill is not the right way to go just because they didn't do it first ? Thank you Arizona for standing up for your rights and protecting your citizens. There are Border Patrol check points all over the state that stop motorists and ask for ID. How different is this ? www.gcranch.com in SE Arizona have guests from all over the world, they have no objection to showing passports and ID when they just travel a few miles to Tombstone, but then they are here legally.
03:26 PM on 04/28/2010
Seriously who "looks" like they are here illegally? I could be here illegally from any european country but I look like a nice white american so I will never get stopped meanwhile plenty of legal CITIZENS will have to live in fear of not having their "papers"? The law says officers can stop anyone at any time putting our citizens on the enemy list.

The Arizona law is not immoral evil or wrong its completely based on current federal law which obama has neglected to enforce notice that before 2009 there was nowhere near the kidnappings murders and other problems on the border before the last year. This law is a moral answer to that. Also try being in mexico without papers or any other country you'll either be arrested and kicked out if your lucky or shot and killed. Yes I feel for the MExican people but were not the cause of their trouble their country is they should stay there and come here only if they follow our rules and try to fix their government

What I don't get is why he weighs in on the bill before the DOJ has... Sure, he was a law lecturer, but ragging the bill before it has been reviewed shows us two things: Obama's arrogance, and his lack of knowledge as to what a president's duties and rights are.
12:52 PM on 04/28/2010
I voted for Obama, I'm a liberal but I'm an American first.

This law is rather rough around the edges but essentially gives the upper hand back to Police Officers to do what we asked them to do, ENFORCE THE LAW.

Police Officers are not going to stage a main street roadblock and stop every brown family that passes by for 8 hours a day. Get real and stop being dramatic.

They will pick a location like they do for Sobriety Checkpoints and setup for a few hours and check I.D.s in an area known for criminal activity or traffic fatalities. They'll make a few arrests because a citizen doesnt have any I.D. but it will be a two hour delay or less.

Unless of course the citizen HAS NO I.D. because they are illegally in this country, then they will be deported.

Now there is a backside to this problem that I believe requires a more suitable fix other than this new AZ law. That is what if the guy is illegal but he's a father to teenage or grammar school kids who were born and raised American ?..................What do we do now ? Place the kids in foster homes ? Wards of the state ? Ship them to Mexico ? None of that is American and we're better than that.

Your description of how the law works and what will happen runs contrary to the way that immigration is being handled in parts of Arizona already.

Exhibit A) Joe Arpaio Sheriff of Maricopa County. Please read this.

Read it. I agree with Sheriff Arpaio's approach and the greater portion of his ideology. The videos and articles do not indicate he's breaching any law much less the US Constitution search and seizure.

Unreasonable. Means your sitting on your porch swing when arrested. Means your eating McDonalds with friends and out of the blue cops arrest you.

That's not what AZ is doing. Your influenced by drama and excitement about the issue. Do some more homework and you'll see that AZ Police are acting as directed. They checkpoint known illegal immigration movement routes. No big news there they do the same with sobriety checkpoints, and traffic, and HOV lanes.

What obama said in Iowa was pure racism and he himself is a racist mole and everybody knows it. He has divided this country like no other president in history. Divide and conquer, that is his agenda and thats what he learned from the freak himself, Alinsky:-)

Where are all of these new tr0lls coming from?

Let me remind you that this President was elected by larger margins that W ever had. A lot of the reason for that was the divisiveness of W's administration.

W wins the divide and conquer argument every time.
12:50 PM on 04/28/2010
He was elected by 53% of the voters because he pretended to be someone who would be fair to everyone. But 47% of the voters did not believe anything that he claimed he was.

President Obama's actions have proven to us that he is a typical big government liberal who does whatever he wants even if the majority of citizens say in polls that it is a bad idea--that they don't want it!

He actually believes that only he and the Democrats know what is best for us.

My point is this: President Obama knew that he would not have been elected had he told us what he really wants our country to look like.

After one year in office, we finally know what he wants our country look like. Recent polls show that the majority of the people don't want Obama's big government. No, they prefer a small government. Will he change? No!
01:52 PM on 04/28/2010
your an idiot ,. Bush divided the country way before Obama was in office. And every damn bad thing that's happened can be traced back to Bush . where was your head during r the 8 years Bush was running amok
12:14 PM on 04/29/2010
It is true that President Bush spent too money of our money. But he is gone and he is no longer our President.

Can we agree that it is NOT rational to blame a previous President for the actions of President Obama! He has been spending our money, making poor choices due to his inexperience, and you are still pretending that he is only fixing the problems that previous Presidents created.

Yeah, because nothing says, "we value you as a neighbor" like smoking a group of defenseless civilians from 10,000 feet.

Militarizing the border is not going to make Mexico love us any more than they already do. In fact, they might consider it a hostile act. If you think there is some sort of messed up thing happening down there now, wait until we choke out their economy a little bit with army checkpoints on all the highways and the National Guard in the dessert. Economic Strain + Strong Drug Gangs - Weakass Mexican Army = Somalia West.
That would be fun to have on the border.

The added bonus would be that as we choked them, we would also be choking ourselves. They are only our third largest trading partners. Lots of Americans and American companies own large intrests down there. What happens if they come into play?”
