Washington Examiner: 'Obama Disses White Guys'

First Posted: 06/27/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:15 PM ET

Finally, the oft-rumored "Whitey tape" has surfaced in the form of a video of President Barack Obama attempting to get some vital portions of the coalition that put him in office in 2008 to maybe get interested in voting again in 2010. That coalition: people who voted for the first time in 2008. And the breakdown within that group? Well, it was "young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women."

It didn't go unnoticed that Obama didn't specifically name-check our nation's terribly oppressed white people by name, leaving many concerned that they might continue to struggle with second-class status in a nation that has always hated and feared them. Today, the Washington Examiner takes up their cause, with aplomb. [Via Dave Weigel]

It seems pretty appropriate that the Examiner takes up this mission. As the Washington City Paper documented four years ago, it's precisely what the paper was founded to do:

Naturally, this conversation began with you-know-who. The good people at Rumproast interceded yesterday with the sort of headline that might have run in that space if honesty were considered a virtue.

Anyway, white people, I'm sorry for all the terrible racism. Please keep your papers on your person at all times!

This headline is an example of exactly what I've been pointing out for a while - although when I do, the tro//s tell me I'm the one who's the racist, playing the race card and race baiting.

Soon after Obama took office, when his popularity was still sky-rocketing, a Republican strategist was asked by a Fox News anchor who the Republican Party could defeat a President who was, at that time, so popular. The strategist's response was, "We have to diminish his support among white voters."

Following that discussion, it became blatantly clear, day after day, week after week, that this was exactly what the pundits and leadership of the GOP was trying to do. It became clear when the Gates incident suddenly rose to the tempo of, "President Obama is a racist ... who hates white people." It became even clearer when Rush began talking about "Obama's America," where little black kids would beat up little white kids, or when he insinuated that Obama is taking away from white people to give to black and brown people. It became clear even when Fox and Rush engaged in their attack on ACORN, which they perceive and which they portrayed as a black organization helping black people to elect black Presidents, like Obama! It also became clear with the Tea Party rhetoric and the virtually all white Tea Party itself.

Unfortunately, some in the white community have been swayed by these tactics; but hopefully, even more have not.

Well said.

The fact is the newer generation of voters of all colors put Obama over the top. Just before the election I was talking to Kelly Hu, an Asian American actress (Sporpion King) from Hawaii who was rallying Asians for Obama.

Even my older black relatives in Washington DC distrusted him at first because he seemed to "foreign" -- from Hawaii? (even though I live here to). They have since changed their tune.

She was finding the older Asians very skeptical, but younger Asians flocked to Obama in droves. The same happened with young whites...and young Latinos.

The 18 - 45 vote overrode the over-50 vote for the first time in history -- and the older generation is upset about it.

Younger people don't view race or gender divisions the same way their parents do. It's something the Washington Times doesn't want to address.

Notice they prominently LEAVE OUT the first group Obama cited: Young People.

That is because most of the young people that voted for Obama were, in fact WHITE -- it doesn't fit their narrative.

You are so right, and I thank you so much for your post.

My daughter's fiance is white, and she has expressed to me how difficult it is for them in respect to the older generation, both black and white.

Although his parents, and of course her parents, are very supportive of them, there are still some older members of my family and also some in his, as well as some of his friends (much more than hers) who have not accepted their relationship, for the very reasons you've implied ... they don't trust him/her, solely because of the color of their skin.

Washington Examiner & Drudge Report writers (bigots) are the ones who are bigots and race baiting; not the President!

The right wing news media (propaganda machines) are desperately attempting to divide the country along racial and gender lines, because they have nothing else on which they can attack the President. This strategy would have worked them perfectly in 1960; but this is 2010. They know this fact very well, but they have to try it anyway.

Any normal person who examines Presidents Obama's appointments at every level of his administration can testify that he is not race baiting. The majority of his top Advisors are White guys, even though they do not constitute the majority of the population!

I saw on the news, like many others have. When The President under his breath said.." It's the F***en Clintons, who are of white desent. His words were caught on the microphone.
What would This be considered?

It disturbed me.

I would love a link to what you and many others saw and/or heard. I'm sure that if so many people are aware of this, then there must be a link somewhere that those of us who've never heard about this could access.

Thanking in you in advance ...

old white people are Christian racists especially in that part of the country
Obama wasted enough time trying to be bipartisan already
he has learned old white people will never back him.
GO OBAMA ! finally doing the most effective thing for the country.
03:44 PM on 05/15/2010
he won with a majority...without the support of 'old white people' he wouldn't be in the white house today.

So, let me get this straight:

When the GOP openly and specifically courted the Latino and Hispanic communities to join the Republic Party—which they have every right to do—that’s OK and not "dissing white guys," "racism" or "playing the race card."

When Michael Steele talked about giving the GOP a more "Urban" and "Hip" flavor—he wasn’t being “uppity” or accused of being a “race hustler.”

When Ronald Reagan said "Latinos are Republicans--they just don't know it yet" indicating that he was encouraging Latinos to join the Republican Party, that was cool with conservatives. None of that “Commie Lib-ur-ral Gummint-run ACORN-inspired”race card playing there…

But when Obama openly courts African Americans, women and young people (of all colors I assume since he wasn't specific, and the last time I looked, both come in all colors) and Latinos to support the Democrats, he is a racist "dissing white guys," and "playing the race card."

Hmmm…Do I detect yet ANOTHER self-serving right-wing, neo-con double-standard here?

These conservatives. At first it was funny because I thought they would see the err in their logic - this is not to say they would join hands with dems and hoist Obama on their shoulders, rather stop their idiocy. But stubborness is apparently idiocy's master. Look at it objectively; the birth certificate nonsense, Sarah Palin's obvious unqualifications, refusal to contribute to healthcare and wall street reform, ect. They surely don't want what's right for the country, at this point they don't want to be seen as right on the issues, what they want more than any thing else in the world is to defeat Obama and at absolutely any cost what-so-ever. That's worth repeating; at any cost what-so-ever.

SF used to have two papers: the Chron and the Examiner. The Chron was the a.m. paper and most preferred; the Examiner came out in the afternoon. The Examiner was sold to some f00l who trashed it into a free, conservative, shrill rag. Not even fun to read for the real estate section and barely good for mulch. Turns out it's a chain paper? Who knew?

In DC, the phrase "Ward 3" is understood as being the area of the city with white upperclass households. The maps accompanying this article show Ward 3 as well represented for Washington Examiner home delivery. A Washington Examiner columnist, Harry Jaffe, did an article (4/28/10) on DC public school reform ("Buffed-up schoold outshine poltics of reform") where he calls out the predominantly white Ward 3 as "Upper Caucasia" where schools have been excellent for decades.

More about this paper, including info on its distribution:

The Examiner’s distribution figures in the Washington metro area are 100,000 on Monday through Wednesday and 135,000 on Friday. On Thursday and Sunday — the two days the newspaper is delivered to upper-income neighborhoods — the circulation is 300,000 and 250,000 respectively.

I really hope mister Linkis understands that white people in this country are hurting and feeling the heavy hand of government. Everyone got hurt by the collapse. I know families that lost everything. We are on the verge of becoming slaves to the banks and the mountain of debt. And thats from Elizabeth Warren not Fox news.

So from one white guy to another, be cool.

Obama got elected by independents. Maybe he should look up the demographics of independents.

What does this have to do with the shameful headline that was used to further exploit our racial divide?

Everyone is suffering from the economic downfall, and I suspect that people of color are suffering at least as much as white people are. Surely you're not suggesting therefore that the suffering of white people in this country justifies this headline!!! Or are you?
