Allegations that a Nigerian senator has married a 13-year-old Egyptian girl have prompted protests and an investigation.
The 49-year-old senator, Ahmad Sani Yerima, has not spoken publicly about the reports. It is alleged he married the girl several weeks ago at a Mosque in Abuja.
A coalition of woman's groups presented a protest to the senate this week, demanding Yerima be suspended. They threatened a sit in outside the senate buildings unless actions were complied with.
"The outcome of this problem is disastrous to the affected little girl," said President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Dr. Mma Wokocha.
The girl's parents are reported to have been paid a $100,000 dowry for their child.
The BBC reports that the senate has authorized an investigation.
