Colbert: "Stephen Hawking Is Such An A-Hole"

First Posted: 06/28/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:20 PM ET

Stephen Colbert takes pride in his anti-Stephen Hawking stance. So when that "hubble-humper' recently suggested that not only does extraterrestrial life exist, but humans should fear an alien invasion, it did not go over too well.

Colbert looked to the future and saw that a lot of good can come of such an event. Like a t-shirt gun wielding mascot for the Cleveland Humans. He summed it up, saying, "For suggesting that aliens enslaving us would be a bad thing...Stephen Hawking is such an A-Hole."

Because most people including Reporters do not understand higher Mathematics Hawkins et al get away by claiming outrageous entities in the Universe. Some years ago they claimed about “Naked Singularity “. On such entity one can go without being sucked into! But these are “Black Holes” with mass of Billions of Suns!! He is also an expert about “Black Holes” that suck in everything including Stars! I wrote him a letter few years ago asking him what should be the mass of such a “Black Hole” to be a Naked Singularity. The good Doctors assistant wrote me that he does not answer such topics to persons who do not have knowledge of “Higher Mathematics”.
There is an article in SCIAM, February 2009 about Naked Singularities! It starts on page 36, Dr. Hawkins picture on 38. They have an equation that predicts it! As I am posting a group of Scientists have some ridiculous equations (no one understands) and take the others for fools. Please read this chapter and post your thoughts.

I feel like Colbert crossed the line on this. I say this because Hawking's ability to communicate with the rest of us is limited a very few movements of an eye, or a finger. He manages 15 words a minute, that are then "spoken through a synthesizer, or saved to a disk. Intelligent folks give him credit with being one of the most brilliant minds to have ever come along. The disease he has is ALS, Lou Gehrigs; It is progressive, with no cure. 7 out of 10 people are dead within 5 years. Only 1 in 10 live beyond 10 years, after the disease is diagnosed. Stephen Hawking began having muscular problems when he was 21. Today he is 68. He's accomplished more than 99% of us ever will. Check him out in wikipedia: How does Stephen Hawking speak?, or Stephen Hawking.
If they traded bodies , Colbert wouldn't last 24 hours.
If this is an acceptable way for Colbert to make a living, poking fun, and ridiculing this man, we all need to take stock of ourselves. Look at some recent pictures of Hawking, and remember he used to look like the rest of us, before you comment. After looking, and thinking a bit, just how would you feel , if your family member had this, and idiots such as Colbert poked fun at him. Hawking is a dad, you know.

Maybe so, but compared to what Hawking has had to overcome in his life to get where he is, I can't believe that a few inherently ridiculous barbs from a TV comic would bother him, or even his family, all that much. In fact, being spared ridicule for the mere sake of a phony compassion or specious pity for his condition might bother him more.

He wasn't making fun of Hawking - he was making fun of the sort of person he was portraying through the role of his character. As he tells guests backstage when they're about to appear on a show, his role is that of a complete lunatic. I think Hawking would get a kick out of the bit - he has a good sense of humor, and he's familiar enough with Colbert to get it.

I wonder what are Colberts real opinion about Hawking.

Hard to say, but I doubt he really thinks he's an a-hole. In a way, it's a left-handed compliment. Hawking himself is doubtless smart enough to know that if you stick your head up high enough to achieve celebrity, somebody is always going to throw rotten tomatoes at it. And Colbert is saying, in essence, congratulations, your disability hasn't stopped you from making enough of a name for yourself to be worth throwing rotten tomatoes at.

In reality the whole Universe is conscious and alive, a vast civilization of souls, and the totality of the Universe is happening right now, this moment. Life in Galactica is fully conscious in this eternal reality, filled beyond measure with Joy and unlimited God-Energy.

This Reality is coming forth right now on this world. It is the conscious Love-Energy that IS the Godhead, coming into being in the hearts and minds of all people; helping, loving and lifting all souls thru their old karmic recordings, which have possessed their minds – up til now, when consciousness rises out of time as it expands to embrace the stars, fulfilling our spiritual birthright.

This high cosmic Intelligence, in the process the world is going thru right now, automatically cleanses the world of, eventually, all things that are not connected to spiritual reality. This means a complete end to war and violence of any kind. Peace will fill our hearts and minds as we create a brand spanking new social and economic system that uses no money. No more being hostages of a false money system that has no truth in it, and preys on the people by trapping them in debt.

Regardless of our errors against natural law, Creation Universe forgives us all, moneychangers included. No one is left out who chooses their self to be a part of the new world. Who would turn down paradise when it stands right before them with an opening of total welcome?!

The first time Colbert says "Stephen Hawking is such an a-hole" he actually kind of mimics the cadence of Hawking's electronic voice... funny, but no response from the audience. Maybe a bit too subtle. Or even unintentional!

Quickest dirtiest way: freeze frame the video and do a screen capture.

Colbert spoofs Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh and usually is just saying the opposite of what he believes. He just wants Hawking on his show. I hope Hawking has seen District 9. Let's be careful about first contact.

Stephen Hawkings has been at the physical mercy of other people for most of his life. It has colored his thinking about the possibility of alien motivation. Remember the "Prime Directive" on Star Trek? I think it was something like "First do no harm or change the direction of evolution....?" Anyway. I think that shows that the Columbus experience has even peculated into mass culture and even humans wouldn't do it the same way again.

The universe is loaded with carbon, water, oxygen, & hydrogen - the building blocks of living things. The universe is teaming with life. Problem is, we humans can't travel to any of it.
The way to communicate in space is with graviton particles, not radio or EMF which is too slow. Gravitons travel at 10,000 times the speed of light. And yes I know what Einstein said, but Einstein was wrong. Eventually someone will build a graviton driven telescope & we will be able to see the universe in real-time, not millions of years later...Alfredschrader@aol.com

Terrance McKenna, hipster saint, might be right up your alley and provide grist for your mill. He thought it anthropomorphic to think radio waves would be used by aliens. He thought it more likely they might try to communicate through psychedelic mushrooms the spores of which can travel the vastness of space and land on any small carbon based planets with information intact if ingested by a creature of a certain level of intelligence. Pretty theory, eh?

Make jokes and clown all you want to but you all need to listen to this man. ET is just a movie. People need to respect other peoples expertise. Stop trying to search for aliens out of space and thinking an alien ecounter is going to be like ET. It could really be a disaster.

TCR loved/s: JD Salinger, Stephen Hawking, Rosa Parks and many civil-rights-issue-people. Kind of nerdy, but hey, Stephen Colbert is the best in roasting/showing compassion/commercializing the fake-character. Is his NASA-tredmill in the spacestation still working?
