AP Text: John Edwards' mistress tells Oprah Winfrey the former presidential candidate's wife didn't know about their involvement until after Edwards gave an interview to ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff admitting the affair.

In quotes provided Wednesday by Harpo Productions, Rielle (ree-EHL') Hunter says John Edwards "came clean with" Elizabeth Edwards after the August 2008 interview. Hunter tells Winfrey people who "knew the truth" asked John Edwards not to do the interview. Hunter says Elizabeth Edwards "really wanted him to do that interview," but "she didn't know the truth."

Hunter is to appear on Thursday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

John Edwards admitted in January he and Hunter have a 2-year-old daughter. He and Elizabeth Edwards are now separated.

Reflection: Here is a woman who was living with a friend in NJ when she happened to link up with a man who could have been president. She knew he was married and that that marriage was important to his position and part of his "image" as a presidential candidate. With this knowledge, she went to meet with this guy in his hotel room on the first night that they met. She clearly KNEW what it meant. I do not excuse John Edwards from his responsibility in all of this but he had a clear expectation when he invited her to his hotel room. There were TWO consenting adults here. But for Rielle to continue to spout the BS about "living in truth" and all is really outrageous. They had unprotected sex and started a relationship even though she knew about his wife and her health issues. John Edwards is a piece of work, but he met his match in Rielle because getting involved with her revealed his charade!!! The US is better having him revealed for the hypocrite that he is. She is one with lots of doublespeak. I saw the Oprah interview as well as read the GQ interview. This is a lady with questionable values! Enough said! Now let's see John Edwards reinvent himself with this history in mind! Rielle has found a goldmine here: she now has a child and a home of her own (which she did not have when all of this started).

Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour was openly skeptical in a hearing Wednesday that Hunter could possibly have a legitimate expectation to privacy, considering her recently televised interview with Oprah Winfrey and her scantily clad photo spread in GQ magazine.

"Why does she get to try the case in the media and the court," the judge asked Hunter's legal team.

I really don't understand the anger at this woman. I was in Elizabeth's place, once, years ago. I NEVER blamed the woman who had the affair with my ex because she made no vow to me. There are men out there who know just the right things to say to get what they want. I think Edwards is a pig but I don't hate this woman for falling for his charm. I saw Liz right after the Enquirer broke the story and she was very hateful to not just Rielle but also to her daughter. I was shocked at how much hate she showed to an innocent baby but I figured it was her pain and also embarrassment that caused her to be this way. Not really a good excuse in my opinion but I guess it works for her. I actually feel sorry for Rielle! With all these people judging her she probably could use a little pity. I think all the haters need to take a good look at themselves to decide how perfect they really are and whether they have the right to judge this woman so harshly.

New Age huh? Rielle said she was being true to herself. How the hell can one be true to herself while being involved with a liar? How can you be true to yourself when the wife has given interviews that she was hurt by this but you feel you had absolutely no part in that hurt? If Rielle really believes in being true to herself and believes in Karma then she realizes the pain she assisted in puttting Elizabeth Edwards thru will ring her door bell and say "It's your turn" one day. I have no doubt that her "Johnny" will meet another woman and Rielle will be relegated to the skeletons of past girlfriends. Wait and see.

To her "truth" is whatever she wants to make it. During the interview, Oprah asked her if Edwards loves her and her reply was "that's my experience of it." When you can distort reality to that extent, truth is replaced by the fiction created in your own mind.

With that as a foundation for her life, you are right about what will happen when it's her turn!

Rielle is much prettier than the pics that are floating around on the internet. She is a blonde, blue-eyed beauty. I can see why John Edwards was smitten.

I do feel sorry for Elizabeth. She can't compete with the other woman in the looks department. But looks aren't everything!

I'm married too and don't believe anyone can take a partner from a committed relationship. However, there's a difference between knowing what a marriage is really like and believing your lying boyfriend while trying to find ways to ease him out of the marriage. I don't doubt that J&E had a troubled marriage long before Rielle. I guess after Johnny gets a new girlfriend and he tells her that he never really loved Rielle, we'll see what Rielle has to say then.

Oprah did the smart thing of asking questions...stepping back...and letting Reille blab away at the mouth and expose herself as the total train wreck she is. So the average viewer could sit at home and say "Wow, she really is a nut job!"

At the same time, Oprah sort of blew it because people also wanted to see Reille be confronted more forcefully, and see her asked some incredibly basic questions (much like the Tiger Woods mistresses who complain that they got a bum rap). Questions like: "He's a freakin' married man! Where were YOUR morals to simply say no? What kind of low life are you that you'd start an affair with not only a married man, but a man whose wife is sick and battling cancer? And let me get this straight -- you made a freakin' SEX VIDEO with him, but then you have the gall to complain about the way your GQ interview came out too sexy and distasteful -- even though YOU sat there and let them take pictures of you WITHOUT your pants on???"

So, Oprah definitely missed the boat on what should have been an interview with some great confrontational TV interview moments.

Wow. It is so heartening to know that--at this moment--there are 417 people in this world who have lived spotless, perfect, blameless lives. Who have never broken a rule or a commandment. And who--if they had--would silently allow the media and an army of anonymous bloggers to define them without speaking out in their own defense.

This is such a tired argument. I guess you think we should dismantle the justice system, too, since that involves sitting in judgment on the actions of others? The difference here, obviously, is that Rielle Hunter is the "mistake maker" going on Oprah Winfrey trying to get the public's attention. Well, she asked for it -- she got it.

Your point is well taken.
I would only add that the tone of the comments here on this subject is more akin to a public stoning than a justice system.
And, of course, in the justice system-- i.e. a courtroom--the accused is allowed to defend herself.
Again, this is not to condone her behavior, but simply to comment on the vicious nature of some of these posts.

No perfection in this world but MATURE adults use their brains when families are involved. I've had ex-boyfriends come on to me and it looked like temporary fun but why would I jeopardize a long, loving marriage and my children's well being to jump over the fence that appears to have greener grass over there? Once you jump that grass is brown.
I'm tired of hearing married people who hook up say "our hearts outweighed our brains". Yeah, right. Your lust outweighed everything else. That's all it is.

She didn't destroy the sex tape because a girl like this never knows when she'll need an effective "bargaining chip." Bet it would have interestingly shown up had Edwards not manned-up on their baby's paternity, some constant cash, and a big fine house - and not in the hands of the Youngs.

I don't know...I'm thinking at this point I could use a bit less "authenticity."
