Lindsey Graham Took Big Money From Energy Donors In First Quarter

When Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) jilted his climate-change partners this week, he abandoned more than a few senators and the White House. He also left behind his first-quarter donors. Almost all of the political action committee money that Graham took in during the first three months of 2010 came from energy companies hoping he'd reach a climate change deal, according to a review of his filing with the Federal Election Commission.

Graham, who isn't up for reelection until 2014, doesn't appear to have been aggressive in his first-quarter fundraising, taking in only $37,000 from PACs. More than $30,000 of that, however, came from energy companies -- mostly nuclear and natural gas companies that would benefit greatly from higher prices for carbon emissions.

PACs associated with Duke Energy, Exelon, Progress Energy, the Edison Electric Institute, PG&E and American Electric Power, among others, contributed heavily to Graham. Missing from his list of contributors are any of the Big Oil companies.

Exelon, a mostly nuclear company, for instance, has estimated it could make an extra billion dollars a year if climate change legislation passes. Higher carbon prices would set off a rush of investments in clean energy companies and a spike in demand for cheap, energy-efficient technologies, which would primarily benefit the lowest emitters of carbon.

The companies that donated to Graham don't seem to be worried that he took their money and ran -- they are just waiting for him to come back around.

"While we are disappointed by this temporary setback, we remain hopeful that the issues will be resolved quickly, and that the U.S. Senate will make passage of an energy and climate bill an urgent priority," said a spokesperson for Exelon, which donated $2,500 to Graham's campaign in January.

EEI and PG&E did not return calls for comment, but Duke Energy, Progress Energy, NEI and American Electric Power all expressed disappointment in the setback and continued confidence in the bill.

"We'd like to think of this as a sort of rain delay," said Mitch Singer, a spokesperson for NEI. "We appreciate the support these three senators have voiced for the legislation, and we have a wait-and-see attitude."

They may not have to wait for long. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said at a press conference Wednesday that he is going to move ahead with climate change legislation before he addresses immigration, which may pull Graham back on board.

In a speech in Nevada last weekend, Reid told a crowd that he'd be moving on immigration reform, which sent Graham into a tailspin. Though Graham has been a longtime backer of immigration reform and had recently called on Democrats to make it a higher priority, he responded by pulling out of climate change negotiations and also demanded immigration reform be taken off the table.

Say it's not true! Not Lindsey! I'm shocked! The "boy" Senator from South Carolina taking PAC money? And I thought he was a good boy, too. What a shame.

Now I understand why they don't allow competition among power companies in North and South Carolina like they do in the Northeast states. We pay ridiculous charges for electricity from Duke Power, but if we bought our power from one of the local co-ops, our power bill would be reduced by two thirds, but we're not allowed to do that here in backward land. You are stuck with the provider assigned to the area of your home. Duke Power needs that money to fill up national and state PACs to prevent competition in allowing consumers to purchase electricity from whom they choose. And hey, it's good for the stockholders too, right? Yeah, right.

Anybody up for a game of Monopoly?

In some countries this would be considered corruption and the energy companies would be charged with bribery. But let's not concern ourselves with stuff like this. Lets get back to accusing other countries of bad governance.

Prostitutes are the hardest workers, and they earn their living the most honest way compared to other working people. Dishonesty is to earn without doing anything, and for now, there is no any name for that .

These are weird and dangerous times to be sure ...BUT

- the more the economy strengthens
- the more the jobs numbers come down
- the more that HC reform kicks in and people see the good
- the more the financial industry is reigned in
- the more the President engages the global community
- the more that the President keeps repeating the positive messages
- the more that the Republican party collapses because of hypocrisy
- the more that people educate themselves

- the more that we stick together and keep cajoling ANYONE on the fence to come over

THE GREATER THE CHANCE FOR A CLEAR MAJORITY TO OUTCOME AT THE POLLS IN NOV.

Keep the faith !
Funky :)

it also brings varying viewpoints in to washington rather than just dems or repuplicans. The corporations look out for their consumer because without the consumer their is no corporation. Think about it, would you rather have some party in washington who has more of an allegiance to their party than to the people of their district, or thousands of corporations keeping different viewpoints in washington. corporations are the only thing keeping dems and republicans 'honest' these days, cause the people sure have no power anymore. Without these lobbyists, dems and republicans would just do whatever the leadership of each party deems right.

I am perplexed by the Green Movement's propensity to smear and slander via specious news reports. Climate Change "proofs" has been proven fraudulent and therefore should not be attacking other individuals with charges of corruption or improprieties.
Inside the Green Movement is the irrational population control, economic contraction policies, promoted to reduce our "foot-print". Dangerous subversive perspectives, vicious accusations, based on pseudo science, are being shoved down our throats, and it's coming out of our ears. Mind Corrupting PYSOPS, that demand our stupidity, via the various media and academia organs must be investigated. It is an offensive, irregular warfare, conducted against the population.

What is your degree? What do you do for a living?
Do you read any actual science research?
If you read Science News, prestigious journal for over 80 years, you would know that "Climate Gate" was completely discredited, there was no evidence found against global warming, just a few planted BS skeptics.

Or just stop listening to us engineers, and stop using all the technology we produce.
After all, if we don't know what we're talking about, you can't trust your tech stuff.
Don't use your DirectTV DVR, it's running my code, and I think global warming is real.

You're use the stuff we design, then tell us we don't know what we're talking about. FU.

Are you questioning my credentials? I should just stop my commentary; the Green movement and its' agenda shall not be questioned?
I am anxious however, I just said that, embedded in the Green movement is an irrational and evil economic and population contraction policy; you don't deny it.
FU? really? I'd say you are prone to abusing people; most people are beneath you and deserve your contempt.
