Jeff Greene: Billionaire Florida Democratic Senate Candidate Ran Previously As A Republican

Just hours after Gov. Charlie Crist shook up the Florida Senate race by announcing he'd run for the seat as an independent, another candidate threw a curve ball: billionaire Jeff Greene officially announced that he would seek the Democratic nomination.

A minted member of the Forbes 400, Greene has the type of private wealth that can make him a force (and for national Democrats, a headache) in the primary race against Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.) Naturally, Democratic officials aren't taking his entree into the race lightly -- expressing moderate frustration with the turn of events.

But the baggage Greene brings to the race is so profound as to eclipse the "outsider" message on which he is running. It's been widely reported that he got rich on the housing market's collapse; that he took investment advise from John Paulson -- the hedge fund manager at the current center of the controversy surrounding Goldman Sachs; that he counted the mercurial Mike Tyson as a best man at his $1 million wedding; and once lived with the notorious madam Heidi Fleiss.

"He's renowned for throwing lavish parties,'' his Rabbi, David Baron, told The Miami Herald in December 2009. "If you were single, it was a great place to hang out. There were a lot of terrific women there."

What is not that well known (at least among those currently chatting about Greene's Senate bid) is that his previous run at elected office was done as a Republican, not a Democrati. Here's the relevant graph from that Miami Herald piece:

"After growing up a rock-solid Democrat, the Harvard Business School had made him a middle-of-the-road Republican in the 1980s. He ran in a Congressional primary in the San Fernando Valley and lost."

Which primary he ran in is unclear. A Wall Street Journal profile that mentions the campaign also doesn't list the year.

Greene did, as reported, return to his "Democratic roots" soon after that election loss. And as his wealth expanded he became a donor to many party candidates. He registered to vote in Florida in March 2008 and did so as a Democrat.

The evolution was completed on Thursday evening when he formally announced his intentions to run against Meek in the Democratic primary.

"Marco Rubio, Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek - they have had their chance. I am sure they mean well, but where are the results?" he said in an announcement video. "They want to give you the false choice between two life-long Republicans and a life-long Democrat. I want to give you a different choice, between three career politicians on one side and an outsider who is willing to shake things up in Washington on the other."

Watch Greene's video:

UPDATE: Greene consultant Paul Blank explains his Republican past to Dave Weigel of the Washington Post.

"He's a Democrat with Democratic values," said Blank. "After Harvard Business School, he did run for Congress in California as a Republican -- but obviously, since then he has been a Democrat, a supporter of the Florida Democratic Party, a supporter of Barack Obama."

I'm a political neophyte, but is there anything in particular to indicate that this might not be anything more that a political subterfuge of a new order of magnitude?

I mean if this man is a billionaire..he might not care if he get elected to a second term and who knows...might vote with the Republicans all the way down the line on certain issues.

Is he going to put everything he owns in a blind trust..if not, can we rely on him abstaining when bills in which he has a financial interest come before the Senate ? ..I doubt if that is an epiphany he has had.....I also understand he owns a floundering company (Sunshine something or other) based in the Midwest that is not paying it's bills in some cases.

As far a being a registered Democrat...that seems fairly fresh...I wonder if he and those surrounding him knew there might be mid term elections in 2010 ?....could it be that some folks plan more than a month in advance ?

Rumor has it that sometimes folks will register in the other party in order to vote for the weaker candidate in the other party's primary.

I'm just saying. It might be a rumor.....

But, if I were a Republican and wanted my party or agenda back in power based on the financial gain I might acquire within the span of one Senate term....

I'd certainly consider putting on "sheep's clothing"........!

A California Republican is a Democrat everywhere else.

Is Jeff Greene being investigated by FBI for his collusion with a convicted felon, jim McConville, who is about to be arrested by the FBI for hundreds of millions in mortgage fraud in CA? Did Greene OWN the actual real estate he was betting against with credit default swaps, so not only was he worse than John Paulson/Goldman Sachs/Abacus deal, but he is now trying to get into the Senate????!!!!!!

Is this a great country/kleptocracy or what????

Someone sees the writing on the wall.
Beginning in the late 80's everyone who held office in my Texas town flipped from Democrats to Republicans as the wind shifted.I was shocked as I'd never heard of such a thing. They realigned all their beliefs to emulate their new party and rode the Bush coattails to Austin and on to Washington. No RINO's but a complete ideology transformation. Almost like they'd been brainwashed. There smugness was disheartening and pretty repugnant.
Within a decade we will see Texas go blue again.

Once again, just because a person is rich does not mean that they are relatively sane, moral or in any way qualified to hold elected office.

The GOP proves this point on an ongoing basis, by their choice of candidates, elected officials and spokespersons i.e., Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Sue "Chicken Woman" Lowden, Cantor, Vitter and the list goes on...........

It looks like Greene bet AGAINST Wall Street. Don't fault him because he was successful for years before and made some smart investments.

He probably ran as a republican because most democrats in congress are old school republicans (Obama included) while the current GOP is made up of fringe loons. Heck, I'm pretty liberal and when I look at Republican proposals from the past they don't sound nearly as crazy as the people who are in office today.

Works for me. Let him run, if he does Crist will sure come out the winner as an independent. Of all the choices, Crist is the best one and I am a Liberal. Crist is for the people, not the party. He should have been Independent all along.
