George Huguely's lawyer says the death of the University of Virginia senior's former girlfriend, Yeardley Love, was an "accident that turned tragic."
According to ABC 7, the lawyer, Francis Lawrence, said in a statement:
"Because this case involves an active, ongoing investigation, any comment on the specific facts would be inappropriate at this time. Until more information becomes available, it is our hope that no conclusions will be drawn or judgments made about George or his case. However, we are confident that Ms Love's death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome. In the meantime, George is withdrawing from the University of Virginia and remains in the custody of authorities. Grief has descended on this community as we attempt to understand what happened and why. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who grieve this terrible loss."
Lawrence also said that Huguely would be withdrawing from the university.
Love was found dead in her apartment by a roommate Monday morning. Huguely was arrested shortly afterward. Huguely appeared at the hearing via videoconference looking disheveled, according to various reports. His parents and stepfather were also there. He is being held without bond.

Friends described the Huguelys as prominent in the Chevy Chase community, but private. The family once owned an estate on the South River in Annapolis that since has been developed into the swanky Fishing Creek Farm. The Huguelys also own a home in Manalapan, Fla., a small beachside community in Palm Beach County.
