The NOAA Vessel Shimata was just finished at Halter shipyard in Mississippi. This research vessel is equipped with a water column mapping system (one of only 6 in the world!) that could easily "see" the oil and gas well before it reaches the surface. This system is designed to map fish populations and other water column life. Why has the R/V Shimata left the Gulf area and running as fast as they can for the Panama Canal to come to the West Coast? This is a once (hopefully) in a lifetime opportunity to study this type of event! The R/V Shimata is a tool that could be used to HELP in this disaster! Why is it running away?

Burning bad idea?
3 days ago there were 2 containers nearly finished. I saw many suggestions for temporary containment on the Horizon site, Today all we hear is that there is a dome placed over one with no effect and there are now 2 more leaks? Help me understand what they are doing with the other containers, and why not using prefabricated temporary containments (with coupling added) suggested on their site.

Where are the OSHA, ASTM, and ANSI engineers/ think tanks. The HuffPost crowd can handle a much more Detailed discussion on this subject without all the vague topics. C'mon. I get the distinct impression that delays are now ON PURPOSE via corporate bribery. Lack of progress in standard construction timelines. It's been 11 or 12 days now. I'm a former construction worker (US Navy Sea Bees), read prints, specifications, and specialized in structural, have acted as prime contractor on multiple projects, there is a NAVAL SHIPBUILDING YARD RIGHT THERE IN THE GULF IN PASCAGULA MISSISSIPPI, what the hell is going on Navy, OSHA, FEMA?! If you're out of booms then make some, put the nation to work if necessary, commandeer a plant. There's PLENTY of old ships, barges, fishing boats, etc that need to be employed making temporary booms and deployed, Japan shipped an island, Saudi Arabia an even larger one in Dubai, Look at what china is doing, there is no shortage of engineers to throw at this/ REQUEST INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

It all makes me sick to my stomach, esp this person:

"The Crazy Lady, of whom it was revealed has ties to Big Oil.

"And of whom has ties with criminal elements in Giddings and Tyler Texas (along with Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity)

"And of whom her PAC treasurer runs a shady political dirty tricks organization.

"This SarahPAC treasurer's organization claims to be a non-profit 501(c)(4), but a nonprofit web identity, but "has not registered as a nonprofit, has no board of directors, and no paperwork on file with the IRS or the Federal Elections Commission".

What I want to know is why the $75 million dollar cap on damages, that can be charged to oil companies was never raised over the past 20 years or why it was so low in the 1st place? Judging by all the economic damage this spill is causing, BP is going to cost small businesses billions of dollars. $75 million wont help anyone.

From Wiki - what happened with the Valdez spill (and what we may be looking at):

Both the long- and short-term effects of the oil spill have been studied comprehensively.[14] Thousands of animals died immediately; the best estimates include 100,000 to as many as 250,000 seabirds, at least 2,800 sea otters, approximately 12 river otters, 300 harbor seals, 247 bald eagles, and 22 orcas, as well as the destruction of billions of salmon and herring eggs.[5][15] The effects of the spill continued to be felt for many years afterwards. Overall reductions in population have been seen in various ocean animals, including stunted growth in pink salmon populations.[16] Sea otters and ducks also showed higher death rates in following years, partially because they ingested prey from contaminated soil and from ingestion of oil residues on hair due to grooming.[17]
Almost 20 years after the spill, a team of scientists at the University of North Carolina found that the effects are lasting far longer than expected.[16]

It all boils down to a really simple principle: this is what happens when you allow an overly-simplistic Adam Smith model to dominate government policy.

Thanks a bunch, Republicans!

Exactly right. Wall St worshippers and teabaggers alike treat free markets as an unquestionable religion. Capitalism is merely a short stage in history, and it is dying pretty quickly, and will do a lot of killing as it goes down.

BP says that the oil is giving the bacteria that eat oil a feast! It's almost like it was planned all along. How nice of BP.

Now that's about as creative as spin gets!

I'm not a meteorologist, and I only watch the weather during hurricane season. But haven't we all sat glued to the tube for forecasts? And then Mother Natures decides to take a different path at the last moment and wham.!

So even though I'm certain that every model is being used to forecast the trajectory of the oil, based on Gulf of Mexico (GOM) weather patterns, loops , data and stats, I'm not even sure that they can be certain about where the oil will make landfall.

As for those that have their heads buried in a tea bag, I'm willing to bet I could forecast a trajectory pattern of their swath of ignorance and how it is going to remain just their ridiculous act out party. With costumes.

Because really, what do they have except their own anger/pity parties and the outfits are just atrocious . Which says a lot about them. So while they're lining up at BP to get their "home grown oil" then driving to shop for tea bags imported by distributors from foreign soil, I wonder if they realize just how much tea is not grown in this Country. They don't seem to know much, yet they scream the loudest. They come off as just being the ignorant pro deregulation types that they are. Pro Crooked Capitalists with a huge chip on their shoulders. Or 3 pointed hats. Hypocrites each and every one of them.

It's a good article, but for one flaw: coining the word "Oilbama" on the one occasion when they reference Obama's announcement of his (now clearly naive) support of offshore drilling plans as yet another misguided "bipartisan" sop to Republicans to attempt to gain their support for an energy reform (which, like healthcare reform, they will do everything in their power to sabotage, of course).

Your use of that term in your posts put your motives and orientation into serious question.

I hope they all rot in hell, from both parties, the oligarchs, the corporatists, who have sold their souls for money and power. Obama got more money than any other candidate from bp during that presidential election. Mary Landrieu got a million dollars from the oil companies. Both parties are willing to gamble on the future of the planet for their wet, oily dreams.

Don't get me wrong, I've thrown a few stones at Obama over this whole thing, but I tend to agree with Sandmanj.

You write well and your blog is informative, but I think the overall impact would be improved if you dropped the "Oilbama." It cheapens an otherwise good piece.
