The Daily Green:

The Exxon Valdez, which ruptured in Prince William Sound, is synonymous with its spill, and the company that owned the tanker. But a broad geographic descriptor -- "Gulf Oil Spill" -- seems to have emerged as the name of choice for the latest manmade disaster.

Gulf Gusher.

A Spill denotes a 'finite' amount as opposed to the infinite amount that has gushed for 19 days.

Industrial accidents should always have an official name including: the names of the companies responsible, the location and the date. The name of the corporations is the primary thing, always. The BP/Hallibutron, Gulf of Mexico, Oil Spill of 2010. People would more often say the BP Spill, then qualify if there are more than one; BP Gulf Spill or BP Spill 2010.
Never let anyone forget that these companies made or allowed this to happen for their own profit. Responsibility must be assigned. These aren't random things. People are trying the get rich and we suffer for it. We shouldn't. You may have heard of Bhopal but you may not recall who caused it; Union Carbide. It should be the Union Carbide, Chemical Mass Manslaughter, Bhopal, India, 1984.

Ode to BP(brown pelican)

Big oil came to collect revenue
Under ocean select chosen few
In fail safe memory we look again
Forever for our brown pelican friend

She soared over waters crystal blue
Rigs offered her a landing site or two
Companies came talk clean and slick
To the Gulf Coast with ilk and ick

Off the shore she strove to interact
As oil rigs stood ready to attack
Fail safe version now only fairy tale
Slurry blurs blame then turns tail

Initial hopeful reports captured our eyes
Unfolds into a proud creature's demise
Brown pelican's sleepy life too soon
Creatures now within the black lagoon

“Halliburton has already raked in more than $20 billion from the Bush-Cheney Administration for work in Iraq, and they were awarded some of the first Katrina contracts," Lautenberg said in a statement. "It is unseemly for the Vice President to continue to benefit from this company at the same time his Administration funnels billions of dollars to it. The Vice President should sever his financial ties to Halliburton once and for all.â€

Cheney continues to hold 433,333 Halliburton stock options. The company built the American prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The Vice President has sought to stem criticism by signing an agreement to donate the after-tax profits from these stock options to charities of his choice, and his lawyer has said he will not take any tax deduction for the donations.

However, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) concluded in Sept. 2003 that holding stock options while in elective office does constitute a “financial interest†regardless of whether the holder of the options will donate proceeds to charities. CRS also found that receiving deferred compensation is a financial interest.
Cheney told "Meet the Press" in 2003 that he didn't have any financial ties to the firm.
“Since I left Halliburton to become George Bush's vice president, I've severed all my ties with the company, gotten rid of all my financial interest," the Vice President said. "I have no financial interest in Halliburton of any kind and haven't had, now, for over three years.â€

It should be called the Cheney Spill. That man has blood and spilt oil on his hands.
