Rob Bickhart Fired: RNC Finance Director Ousted By Michael Steele

PHILIP ELLIOTT   05/ 7/10 10:46 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — The Republican National Committee's finance director and his deputy were forced out Friday as the organization still reels from reimbursements for donors to attend a lesbian bondage-themed nightclub in Los Angeles.

RNC chief of staff Michael Leavitt sent an e-mail message to committee members telling them of the changes in the fundraising department and promising a strong strategy heading into crucial midterm elections in November. A replacement for finance director Rob Bickhart and deputy Debbie LeHardy, expected to be longtime Republican fundraiser Mary Heitman, was to be announced soon.

The finance team's ouster came late on a Friday as the RNC prepared for a major meeting with its state party chairs in the Washington area next week. The RNC became a late-night joke and questions arose about chairman Michael Steele's tenure after financial reports showed lavish spending, including almost $2,000 for a night at a sex-themed nightclub with topless entertainers.

In a prepared statement, Steele said, "We are well-positioned for victory this fall and look forward to working with Mary to continue to improve upon our strong fundraising numbers and provide the support necessary to win elections."

Steele was not present at West Hollywood's Voyeur night club on Jan. 31 when a group of young Republicans ran a tab picked up by the RNC. After reporters noted the bill in a funding report, Steele dismissed chief of staff Ken McKay. That shake-up prompted one of Steele's top advisers, Curt Anderson, to leave the committee's circle of consultants. As a close confidant, Anderson helped Steele make many of the party's decisions.

Allison Meyers, a staffer blamed for the outing, also lost her job. The committee said it would be reimbursed by a donor who had attended.

After the first reports of the trip to the sex-theme club, an internal audit found "significant deficiencies" in RNC operations. That report said the tab from Voyeur was reimbursed with a forged signature but reported it was "questionable" whether Bickhart had reviewed the reimbursement.

That report also recommended a contract with Bickhart's company – eCapitol Direct – be ended. The audit said the contract could be worth as much as $270,000 on top of Bickhart's salary as an RNC senior official.

"This contract should be canceled," RNC Treasurer Randy Pullen wrote to members in March. RNC spokeswoman Katie Wright said it had been canceled.

Before the issue could be forced at the RNC meeting, new chief of staff Leavitt told committee members Bickhart and LeHardy were no long involved with donors' dollars.

"While we appreciate their service to the RNC and wish them well in future endeavors, the chairman felt it was important to restructure the department in order to continue to improve on our strong fundraising numbers," Leavitt said in an e-mail obtained by The Associated Press. "We are well positioned for victory this fall and this will only help us to provide the necessary resources to defeat Democrats across the country."

Which one of our major parties is going to start leading by example on issues of budget, and frugality etc? Thus we stumble on, another trillion in debt on top of the other 13....

Gee, GOP -- could you move any slower? Eleventh-hour firings don't exactly make you look proactive...

The conscious act of entertaining clients at an S&M venue is telling, you just do not entertain clients/donors at such events unless there is an absolute expectation that they will 1) walk in and 2) enjoy and feel gratified. With those two things in mind, we must surmise that there exists a sub-set of Republicans (large, medium or small) that subscribes to such proclivities and that there exists an institutional (RNC) process to 1) identify 2) court 3) collect and 4) reward such patrons. This thing ain't over yet!

I think, they should change the title of this story.....

I do not believe Steele have the power to sack anyone, the major reason he was put in that position just to be seen and as a response to the emergence of a black President. The same way Palin was introduced as a response to the Hillary-Obama fallout....Steele is just a "GOP front"

A so called GOP leader who apologies to Rush and has no real influential power within the GOP leadership cannot "ouster" anyone, the guy was advised to leave. Do you think if Rush or some other GOP leaders wanted the guy to stay, Steele would have a say in it?

Watch out the way they will dump him, when all the romance is over. Charlie Crist will be better than him, after the romance is over.

I don't know what's the big deal - I always take clients to a post-fundraising bondage fest after spreading lies and collecting checks.

RESIST THE TEMPTATION :

Kristol: K1ll It, and Start Over
BY WILLIAM KRISTOL
July 20, 2009

With Obamacare on the ropes, there will be a temptation for opponents to let up on their criticism, and to try to appear constructive, or at least responsible. There will be a tendency to want to let the Democrats' plans sink of their own weight, to emphasize that the critics have been pushing sound reform ideas all along and suggest it's not too late for a bipartisan compromise over the next couple of weeks or months.

My advice, for what it's worth: Resist the temptation. This is no time to pull punches. Go for the k1ll.

My advice, for what it's worth: Resist the temptation. This is no time to pull punches. Go for the k1ll.

We are seeing the split on the radical, obstructionist right. We are seeing the continued obligatory No to any effort at bipartisanship.

Do NOT let up !
Do NOT stop pushing !
Do NOT stop canvassing, cajoling and spreading the true message !
The Dominoes are falling for them !

YES WE WILL !

They had to do something, but it was long overdue, it should have happened a while ago.

Guess it would have been too obvious for Micheal to fire himself.
Someone else had to take the fall.

It sickens me that Steele doesn't take responsibility for his actions and step down, instead of firing people and placing the blame anywhere and everywhere but on himself.

Steel has shown promise, just a week or so, he stood up in front of a whole bunch of people and told the truth. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/right-now/2010/04/steeles_biggest_gaffe_so_far.html

The GOP clearly isn't the party of "no" when it comes to sexual deviancy. Let's get real: they say they are "God-fearing" for recruiting purposes only, when fresh meat is needed for wars of aggression to expand multi-national corporations that paid into their campaign.

Didn't Steele, when speaking with Andrea Mitchell earlier in the day yesterday or even the day before state to her that he had ALREADY fired those that were involved with Bondage Gate? Guess, he actually didn't.

He fired one low-level functionary. He didn't get around to these other two until Andrea Mitchell reminded him that America hasn't forgotten about this and the criticism isn't just going to disappear if he keeps his head down.

The future of the GOP is likely bound to the past by their Republican DNA (and that doesn't
stand for Democrats Need Annhilation, although that's part of their shtick). In the article,
". . . a group of young Republicans ran a tab picked up by the RNC." Young Republicans
are just following in the footsteps of their ancestors. Take Jack Abramoff who, only 4 years
ago was convicted of tax evasion, client fraud, and bribing Congress. What was really criminal--though not prosecuted--was his ribald squandering of millions of client dollars on a lifestyle of
excess and deception. Or take Duke Cunningham, the long time California Congressman whose
Rancho Santa Fe, California digs contained such priceless artifacts as a Louis XIV commode;
he was convicted of kickbacks from defense contracts, along with his buddy and CIA Deputy
Director. Or, take them all, any of the many Conservative crooks and cons back to and
including the time of Reagan. A party whose philosophy is built around contempt for the
poor and needy, whose double standards include moral persecution of unwed mothers
and gays, will, sooner or later begin to implode from the accumulation of methane gas
which builds up from their own BS and corruption.
