Mary Kay Henry Elected SEIU President

WASHINGTON — The nation's fastest growing labor union elected its first woman president Saturday.

The Service Employees International Union selected Mary Kay Henry, head of the union's health care division, to lead the 2.2 million member union. She replaces Andy Stern, who is leaving after 14 years of high profile, and sometimes divisive, leadership.

Henry said she hopes to "restore" SEIU's relationship with other labor unions through a series of "listen and learn discussions." However, she said, there have been no talks at SEIU about rejoining the AFL-CIO.

"We don't think it's about how the labor movement is structured," Henry said Saturday.

In 2005, Stern led SEIU and six other unions to break away from the AFL-CIO – the nation's largest labor federation – to form the rival Change to Win federation. Stern had said the older federation was not effectively organizing new members to replace the millions dropping from union ranks year after year.

Henry said SEIU leaders decided Saturday to increase political spending on governor's races this November by $4 million. That would be on top of the $40 million SEIU had planned to spend this election cycle, Henry said.

In governor's races, SEIU plans to target Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New York and Ohio, Henry said.

SEIU also plans to spend $4 million on efforts to organize more private-sector workers, she said.

"Lets face it, working people have had it," Henry said. "Working people want real change."

SEIU's membership more than doubled under Stern, increasing by 1.2 million.

Henry's election was expected after her main rival for the post, Anna Burger, dropped out of the contest last month. Stern earlier this year announced his plans to step down from the union.

What's the matter with you? Are you so afraid of your own sexuality that you have to hide it by hate mongering?

And how do we know she is gay? And who cares? What counts is can she do the job? Lots of SEIU members are really unhappy with Andy Stern and his politics.

And those out there who think our dues are used for politics they AREN'T. We DONATE to another fund for politics. The money is used for local politics, not just state and federal which helps us get local county supervisors and city councils member elected that are PRO WORKING FAMILIES regardless of where they work..

Two days after the first post here, and the paternalistic, authoritarian, anti-union, anti-worker throwbacks still have nothing better than to comment on her appearance.

Bravo! But can she cook?

Was she elected by secret ballot? This is one of the unions that wants to take that away from all workers (Obama supports it too) in order to make it easy to collect dues. When workers vote, the unions win about 58% of the time but if they take secret ballot voting away it goes up much more.

Sorry cabin gay,If your referring to the EFCA it does not take away the secret ballot, why do youcome here a spread your Reich hate towwards unions.Read about the EFCA form non conservative media. The EFCA helps labor organize without discrimnation from the employer through retribution. The EFCA is meant to get the process moving in a fast order with signing an A card to see if interest is viable for organizing a secret ballot is still used for the final vote.

Wow -- it seems that there quite a few people here that are afraid of a strong woman in a position of leadership, but it appears that they are even more afraid of "the gays!"

I would hate the be so afraid of gay people! And brown people and African Americans! That's a lot of people to be afraid of!

Anyone chosen to lead the SEIU should be feared. Andy Stern was a nightmare.
11:54 AM on 05/09/2010
My opinion, as a dues paying SEIU member, is that this is a malignant and parasitic organization that simply nourishes itself on a cut of the wages it members earn. Now, I was proud to be part of the union that supports progressive causes and helped elect Obama... of course. But, it seems that this particular union acts in ways that cause many to feel that they don't value "democracy" at the rank and file level.

I have seen our local organizer take on adversarial positions against management solely for the sake of being adversarial... an easy task. But when faced with disunity among the rank and file, instead of putting in the work to reshape the chapter based on those progressive values this "organizer" simply backs away and refocuses on fund raising for whatever the political cause of the day is.

Now, if I may go off topic for a moment.... remember when "the old boy's network" seemed to hold sway. 'Nuff said. Deal with it.

But good luck to this individual. After all, she may be the change we need.

Democracy in a union starts with YOU. If all you can do is bad mouth the organization, maybe you should think about quitting. Unions have enough problems without their own members publicly trashing the organization. You have more power than you know if you focus and work for change.

How can one quit without quitting their job. If you keep the job that you have and quit the union you still have to pay the dues, and you lose your medical.

And no people like me who really don't believe that unions work the way that they were meant to work have no power if we go against what the unions want to do.
11:36 AM on 05/09/2010
Good luck Mary Kay. The biggest endorsement you have is that Stern didn't want you. I am hoping this means that you care about the members and will give us a voice. Many of us feel that we have been "gutted" from the inside. Looking forward to what you can do.

Wow. Her hair is too short? You can't see her boobs? Who knew it was so hard to please the men of the HuffPo?

I'm sure Ms. Henry is just crushed at her many failures in this regard, and will have to settle for, you know, doing her job. Which is why she was elected. I really hope these aren't progressives on here acting as if any woman who holds a high-level position is there solely for decorative purposes.

Fanned. Stern almost single-handedly brought this once strong union to it's knees, and his sexual preference was never an issue. When I see posts like those of david5000 and Spooky Two, I realize what a long uphill battle we still face to remove sexism from the workplace. I am pretty sure that neither of those manly men would not appreciate inquiries about their sexuality, nor do I have any interest in knowing, despite what their homophobic remarks infer.

The SEIU was very good at getting their Dem candidates like Corzine elected in NJ. And the Dems in the NJ DEP were very good at regulating out business the factories that paid good union salaries. Now their are only white collar union jobs in NJ. The Blue collar union jobs in Newark,Linden, and Camden are mostly gone. No factory jobs for Black Men, but government jobs for White Woman. Is this Social Justice?

While it is true the disappearance of blue collared jobs is a bad thing it promotes the idea that people should aim for white collared jobs which usually have higher salaries. It just depends on the willingness of people to get retraining.
10:54 AM on 05/09/2010
Your suggestion that blue collar jobs are for blacks and white collar jobs are for whites is of course deeply racist. Your assertion that the loss of blue collar jobs is the fault of Democrats and regulation is merely wingnut teabagger idiocy. Your week is not starting off well.
