Obama: iPad, Xbox Turn Information Into A 'Distraction'

HAMPTON, Va. -- President Barack Obama, addressing graduates at historically black Hampton University on Sunday, said that it is the responsibility of all Americans to offer every child the type of education that will make them competitive in an economy in which just a high school diploma is no longer enough.

Moreover, Obama said, the era of iPads and Xboxes had turned information into a diversion that was imposing new strains on democracy.

"You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank that high on the truth meter," he told the students. "And with iPods and iPads, and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation. So all of this is not only putting pressure on you; it's putting new pressure on our country and on our democracy."

Quick Poll

Do you agree with Obama?

Yes.

No.

Obama told the nearly 1,100 graduates assembled in the university's sun-splashed Armstrong Stadium that they have the added responsibility of being role models and mentors in their communities.

Clad in a blue gown, Obama recalled the university's humble beginning in September 1861 as a school for escaped slaves who sought asylum after fleeing nearby plantations in the Confederate South. Obama said the founders recognized that, with the right education, such barriers as inequality would not persist for long.

"They recognized, as Frederick Douglass once put it, that 'education means emancipation.' They recognized that education is how America and its people might fulfill our promise," said Obama, the first black U.S. president.

Drawing parallels to current challenges, Obama noted that Hampton's graduates are leaving school as the economy rebounds from its worst downturn since the 1930s, and with the U.S. at war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Obama said education can help them manage the uncertainties of a 21st century economy.

For much of the last century, a high school diploma "was a ticket to a solid middle-class life," he said. But no more, as jobs today often require at least a bachelor's degree - or higher. To that end, Obama is pouring tens of billions of dollars into K-12 and higher education with an eye on raising standards and building the future workforce.

"The good news is, all of you are ahead of the curve," Obama told the graduates. "All those checks you wrote to Hampton will pay off." But too many others, he said, including disproportionate numbers of blacks and Hispanics, are unprepared and are outperformed by their white classmates in the U.S. and around the world.

"All of us have a responsibility, as Americans, to change this, to offer every single child in this country an education that will make them competitive in our knowledge economy. That is our obligation as a nation," the president said.

Obama said the graduates also must be role models and mentors in their communities. And they must pass the sense of an education's value on to their children, as well as the sense of personal responsibility, self-respect and the "intrinsic sense of excellence that made it possible for you to be here today," he said.

Obama's speech was one in a series by top administration officials at historically black colleges and universities this year. In all, 11 of the nation's more than 100 "HBCUs" will have an administration official speak at graduation.

First lady Michelle Obama was the commencement speaker Saturday at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, which began as the only state-supported institution of higher education for blacks in Arkansas.

Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett was scheduled to speak at Morgan State University's commencement ceremony on May 15, followed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates at Morehouse College and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice at Spelman College, both on May 16.

Earlier this year, Obama named Hampton University President William R. Harvey to be chairman of a presidential advisory board on historically black colleges and universities.

Obama also received an honorary doctor of laws degree. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he quipped that the honorary degree "is much less expensive than my last law degree."

Obama has two graduation speeches left to deliver this year: at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., on May 22, and at Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Mich., on June 10.

Because we all know it's terribly wrong to be distracted by information. I mean we wouldn't want to accidentally have to think about various things and form our own opinions. For shame America. For shame.

So, there's three thoughts I have about this...
First, of the devices he named, the iPad is the only one close to being a "a tool of empowerment, ... the means of emancipation." These devices really are just for entertainment. Sure, I use my iPod to read articles online, pay my bills, etc, but it's mostly for entertainment.

Second, I like how he has to find a reason to use "emancipation" in front of an "historically bIack Hampton University," as if sIavery still exists. That's just ridiculous.

Finally, of all the people in this nation addicted to video games, TV, etc, since when has Obama became their father? Isn't it their decision to let their children use so much time with these "distractions?"

Hope this clarifies things for you:

BTW, many of the reactions to this story demonstrate that people who dislike Obama will look for any excuse to rage against him. Not to mention that these same people are proving his point...

"...as if slavery still exists". Not only does it exist in its traditional form, it has also been transformed into a more subtle but even more powerful form: economic slavery.

For proof of the former, I invite you to meet the world, specially in the countries that preach the "american way of free trade democracy", and get some first hand experience. I bet you we could find more than one example of slavery in US, camouflaged one way or another. I'm not communist, I'm just pointing out the fallacies of thinking that the concept of "emancipation" is obsolete.

In regard to economic slavery, I suggest you take a walk around your neighbourhood. Even better, take a deep look at your own life. If you consider yourself emancipated of the debt/monetary system, kudos; if not, then I suggest you redefine your concept of freedom.

But I'm guessing your case is not the latter, considering that someone that passes by the name conservador-rebelde (conservative rebel), a schizophrenic paradox, and that believes that any form of child upbringing is only the parents' responsibility, is probably no more than a rich kid with daddy issues.

Don´t get me wrong, I was raised in a family that got by pretty well, I´m just trying to point out that before you start dealing judgements regarding subjects that are currently responsible for the poverty and misery enjoyed by over 3/4 of the worlds population, think things through.

"I invite you to meet the world, specially in the countries that preach the 'American way of free trade democracy.'"

Since when are we world police that have to ensure everyone else's freedom? Who gave us that authority?

As for "freedom from debt," when were we enslaved? When did we not put ourselves in a position to assume all the debt? When was it forced upon us? Don't say "when you bought a house," "when you bought a car," etc, because those are all choices we made to get into debt. That said, debt isn't inherently bad... giving it your freedom makes it bad.

I guess that this has something to do with the current FCC effort to change the designation of the internet from an information source to a communication source. You could say that he's "community organizing" here. It's what he does.

Obama, I have a great deal of respect for you, but hands off my Xbox, please!

Saying that with an Xbox or Playstation that "information becomes a form of entertainment," misses the obvious point that these are devices *created* for the purpose of entertainment.

Question is how much time you spend every day to entertain your self virtually playing sports instead of playing sports?? (the good case when the games are not about shooting, punching or stealing cars). Obviously this is a question geared more towards the children.
I do believe that Obama actually responded to the deplorable manifestation behind him, most of the students (specially the young lady) were very COMMITTED on texting during his speech...

Just to clarify -- I agree that overindulgence is a bad thing. Real life trumps game life every time. But I think the distinction between information overload and video game addiction is significant enough to call them two different problems.

As much as I love my Xbox, Obama has a point. If you've never played on Xbox Live with a microphone, don't. Save yourself the despair. The future of America is riddled with 10-year-olds who use the n-word as if it were an action verb.

Then again, if you want to feel better about yourself, just start talking about the healthcare bill. Everyone online hates it, yet has no idea what it does. It's pretty funny, really.

He may have a small point that young people are too busy with freetime activities to get serious work done, but it's not really what he said. He said that too much information is more than we can handle. I doubt he would've said that before a year ago, or before, when information would've been power.

Information and the media helped get him elected.

I distinctly recall him saying he had an iPod

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1589934/20080625/springsteen_bruce.jhtml

Probably should have left the iPod reference out...In this info overload where it was too easy to spot this untruth.

He's just saying we shouldn't take the opportunities we have for granted. In our society, we have access to information 24/7, and right now (arguably, I guess) we have fairly unrestricted access to any information at our fingertips (laptops, wii, xbox, ipad, ipod, etc). It can be used for good, or not so good. We can greatly further our own education or we can ignorantly let the machines and pop culture dictate our lives. The awareness is important.

If GWB or Oboma had campaigned on what they REALLY wanted to do, they prob would not have been elected. Obama campaigned using XBOX games. None of which I know how to work.LIARS!!

I doubt he'd lie about it, seeing as it appears to be a disadvantage. I'd rather have a president that was comfortable with new tech. Obama didn't need to know how the in-game advertising in his campaign actually worked. He just needed a marketing guy to tell him it was a good idea, and set it up.

Obama knows the Right Wing propogandists like to target a young audience and slam them with false information. They tweet more than Dems by more than 2 to 1 about politics and they are not honest with thier messages. Tokyo Rush vs Tokyo Rose. Dems don't slam kids with messages. This is a real concern. He may have picked the wrong place to try and point this fairly new phenomenon.

When George W Bush was our President. He never misspoke. He was concice. We all knew exactly what he meant............ I would think Obama meant the idiot blogs out there. The equivalent of AM talk radio. Ditto head garbage. It is a distraction. Ann Coulter, stupid argument kind of distracting. In the end people listen to what they wish. I think Obama just wanted to let them know, as he has in other speaches there is more out there to listen to than Rupert Murdoch has to offer. Just not as many venues as he owns and or controls.

I guess Obama feels we should not have too much information, its bad for us. I am sure he and his team will come up with a fair way to limit and screen the information we recive.Thank God we have Him to control the information flow to us!
Hey, maybe Obama’s Diversity Czar,Mark Lloyd can fix the problem. He loves how Chavez seized control of the media in Venezuela so he could nationalize private business!
Information is a distraction? Really? I guess it is to Him, (if it doesn’t conform to his agenda). No wonder his ratings fell off a cliff, people are waking up to his real agenda.
