Barbara Walters announced on The View Monday that she is having heart surgery later this week. She is having a faulty valve replaced after an echocardiogram indicated she needed the procedure performed.
"Since the summer is coming up, I can take a nice vacation," Walters said of the timing, adding that she has known she would need this done at some point for some time.
She said the recovery can take from one month to three months.
But, she has largely kept her condition a secret. "It will be a surprise to many friends."
Asked by her cohosts if she is scared, Walters said no.
"Nobody wants to have this kind of surgery... I don't think I'm really scared. I'm glad it's going to be over with.. It's been on my mind for a long time."
She added that her daughter will come be with her for the operation.
