Diane Sawyer Doesn't Know Her Ivy League? (WATCH)

Diane Sawyer

Someone needs to brush up on her collegiate athletic conferences.

In a video chat with Politico's Mike Allen about U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court, Sawyer made a faux-pas when analyzing what the religious and academic makeup of the court would be with Kagan included. Emphasis ours:

"No protestants on the court now," she says. "You've got Catholics and Jewish members of the court now. You have all Ivy League if you include Columbia, of course, which we do, and there are -- what -- five of the justices went to Harvard?"

Columbia -- of course -- is the fifth-oldest college in the U.S. and one of the founding members of the Ivy League.

WATCH: The fun starts at 1:30.

Other than the Big Three, known among the Ivies collectively as HYP, most Americans would be hard pressed to name all of the Ivy League schools. Unfortunately, for Columbia University, it has the misfortune of being confused with less prestigious schools like "Columbia College of Chicago" or "Columbia College of Missouri." Nonetheless, it is surprising that Ms. Sawyer, a Wellesley College alumna who works in New York City, would make such a mistake.

Too me her comment seems more of a sarcasm pointing out the centrifuge of how the Ivy League is now being interpreted largely through (as you poignantly stated HYP other schools (and students) even in the Ivy League aren't getting rolls and shots at these higher caliber positions. As confirmation, one only needs to take a look at the clerks for the supreme court, if my memory serves me, theres only one non Ivy Leauger from Notre Dame and a LARGE swath are HYP

Outrageous! How can we ever take her seriously again?

How is this worth the time it takes to read/watch it?
