How To Convert A Gas Motorcycle To Electric (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 05/10/10 12:03 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:25 PM ET

In this cool video, Marque Cornblatt from GOMI Style shows how to convert a gas motorcycle into a zero emission battery-powered vehicle with the help of his friend. They take a broken down Honda Rebel, strip it to its frame, and reassemble it with an all electric drive-train. Using some ingenious thinking, including the use of an old cooking pot to hold electronic components, they create a completely silent 45 mile per hour carbon free motorcycle in just a weeks time, perfect for city commuting.

This is a great! I am a big fan of the electro franken bike. It can be a fun and rewarding hobby as can any motorcycle hobby. I love bikes in general personally. We do however have some real production based options here in the US from US companies. Take a look at Zero Motorcycles and the Brammo Enertia. Of course there is plenty of debate about which is better. Simply both brands are great and offer product for very different users. I am personally liking the Zero more simply due to the Dual Sport model. It fits my needs well and I love it. Plus there is a little more aftermarket support for the Zero line from a company called Just Zeros.

home made bike conversion - vs - Made in China electric scooter.

Thing is, we can and should see proper electric cars on the road now. We have the technology.

I ride almost every day, rain or shine, and have been all over the world on two wheels; I'm pretty happy with my carbon footprint sitting around 60 miles per gallon... that beats a Prius nicely. But I would totally get one of these rigged up for anything around the city (although a smaller electric scooter might be more practical for that). Anyway, good on him for doing something to help the cause instead of just flappin' his gums about it over a microbrew, right? He should go into business making these out of old eighties junker bikes! If he enclosed the batteries in some hard-shell sidecases, it would look pretty sleek, too...

How about retrofitting a bicylce into an electrically operated moped. I saw this hybrid while as a tourist in China. It is very popular there where they can get 50km for each battery charged. Usually the electric power come in handy when cyling up a slope or when the rider is tired.

Here's some battery-assisted suicide sowers:

I would highly recommend that nobody gets the the first item on your list. 120 kph is way to fast for a bicycle. [It probably really doesn't go that fast.] Mine will do 30 kph and that's plenty fast.

All 2 wheel vehicles are dangerous for 2 reasons: 1. Cars, you are at a distinct disadvantage if one comes in contact with you. 2. Fun, that great feeling of flying low can lure you into exceeding your own level of competence..

Interesting. But are the batteries, rechargeable, sustainable, recyclable? And most of our electricity is generated from coal, dirty coal. Kudos though for thinking about dirty emissions.

Those appear to be normal lead acid car batteries - easily available, reachargeable, with all the normal considerations of lead acide batteries. Nothing new there, other than someone is doing something to get off the oil teat.

Nice try, but your complaint won't fly. The only means of personal transportation that would be cleaner than this machine is would be a bicycle or walking.

It's not a complaint. I just don't agree that we should push "electric" until we have a better way to make electricity. Batteries in landfills, not so good.
I still give kudos for innovative thinking.

This should lend some life to older bikes. Congrats.
