Sure, the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles is flashy and full of naked women, but there's nothing like the real thing. The original Playboy Mansion was designed by architect James Gamble Rogers in 1899 and Playboy Magazine founder Hugh Hefner bought the Chicago estate in 1959.
The iconic mansion was the place to be in the 60s and early 70s, when Hefner threw parties for celebrities and cover girls. Chicago Agent magazine reports that Hefner donated the property, located at 1340 N. State St., to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1974.
The building was converted into "seven exclusive single family residences" in 1993, the magazine reports. One of the units is currently on the market for $2.9 million. The 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath unit overlooks the mansion's gardens and is in the heart of Chicago. Susan Wagner of Prudential Rubloff is the listing agent.
When Hefner lived in the residence, a brass plate on the door read "Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare," or, "If you don't swing, don't ring."
