Truman Capote's Former House On Sale For $18 Million (PHOTOS)

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - The Brooklyn town house where Truman Capote wrote "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and other notable works is on sale for $18 million.

Sotheby's International Realty agent Karen Heyman said Monday that the building is expected to break sales records as one of the most expensive townhouses in the borough.

She said the Brooklyn Heights house is on the market for the first time in 70 years. Built in 1839, the house has 11 bedrooms, a finished basement with a wine cellar and a 2,500-square-foot garden.

Capote rented a basement apartment from Broadway art director Oliver Smith for 10 years in the 1950s and 1960s. The author wrote an essay, "A House on the Heights," based on his experiences in the neighborhood.

The large garden alone makes the 18M price tag worth it. Having that much private outdoor space in a large city like New York is indeed a luxury.

Pretty, but not $18m pretty--especially not when the primary draw (aside from what I understand is a desirable location) is that an author once lived in the basement.

Who has been living in this home?

I am always amazed at what people are willing to pay for a place to hang their hats. It's a beautiful home, but I wouldn't pay 18 million for it if I had it.

11 bedrooms in a house that size? Most of them must be pretty small,

George Plimpton's biography of Truman Capote is quite possibly the best biography of ANYONE ever written. Even if you despise Capote, it's worth a read. There's no "narrator," just people who knew Truman sharing their experiences of him.

All wannabe biography writers should read it.
