Sorority Formal Miami Ohio

CINCINNATI — Miami University of Ohio has suspended a sorority for a year after a lodge owner complained about damage and unruly behavior at a spring formal including guests urinating in sinks, men scrambling over the bar for drinks, and couples caught having sex.

The action against the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women chapter followed a letter of complaint from the lodge owner to the southwest Ohio school about the April 9 event at Lake Lyndsay Lodge, about 30 miles north of Cincinnati.

Pi Beta Phi's national leadership said in a statement that it has placed the Miami chapter on probation "in order to change the culture of the chapter and to ensure it models Pi Beta Phi and Miami University values."

The suspension means the sorority loses its campus dorm suite, can't recruit new members and can't participate as a group in campus activities, Miami spokeswoman Claire Wagner said.

"We are extremely disappointed and embarrassed by the behavior displayed by these students," David Hodge, Miami's president, said Tuesday in a statement. "Their actions are contrary to the values of Miami University. We deeply regret the impacts that their actions have had on the owner and staff of the facility and on the rest of our student body."

There was no answer Tuesday at an Oxford, Ohio, telephone listing for the chapter.

The school suspended the group after an April 30 hearing. The letter from lodge owner Lyndsay Rapier-Phipps has began circulating online, and in it, she describes many guests arriving intoxicated.

Participants urinated in sinks, vomited and broke a concrete lion and other items. Two couples were caught having sex, some people tried to swim in the lake, someone flipped over the appetizer table, and men climbed over a counter to get drinks after the caterer cut off alcohol. A pile of human feces was found outside the lodge, she wrote.

"Some could barely manage to walk inside the facility," the letter states, then goes on to describe one couple caught having sex in a closet and another in a beach house, in addition to other crude or destructive behavior.

"We are appalled at the students' behavior," Rapier-Phipps wrote. "My husband and I are graduates of Miami University, and we both agree that college students can drink and have a good time, but (the formal) ... was a bunch of college students getting totally obliterated and behaving like immature children."

She said she kept the group's $500 security deposit for damages and extra cleaning costs at the lodge, a popular site for weddings, proms and other gatherings.

"The alumnae join Fraternity leadership in expressing great disappointment in the decisions of a few chapter members who have completely disregarded the values in which Pi Beta Phi was founded," Mary Loy Tatum, grand president of the 134-chapter organization, said in a statement.

The chapter must submit a reorganization plan before being considered for reinstatement after May 31, 2011, the school said. If it is accepted, the sorority would be on probation for two semesters during which it would be banned from "any social function with alcohol."

The damages should be paid by the individuals involved in the destruction. I attended college, and I was constantly being begged to join a fraternity. I didn't because the whole system is elitist, and I was 100% against paying enormous fees for friends. This is not surprising to me. The females and the males involved in fraternities and sororities are drunks and druggies. They are both filled with shameless whores, and they walk around as if they are someone for whom others should aspire to be. I despise these organizations, and there is not a chance in hell I would allow any child from my family to be a part of these drunken whores who seem to believe they are entitled. You are disgusting.

Why didn't the owner call the police and have the group evicted?

I read a little more about "The Party". In general it didn't sound like anything out of the ordinare for college revelry but there's fun and then there's just subhuman behavior. Defacating outside on the side of the facility isn't funny, it's disgusting. It would be funny if it was say Rush Limbaugh's house......NOW THAT would be funny but a small family venue for propper prom and greek events is NOT the place for that. Not knowing the difference pretty much tells you what kids are like today.

I had the same level of fun in college but we never imposed on other people's good nature. We were respectful when needed and required but we cut loose when it didn't hurt anyone. Today kids dont care who they hurt while they are having fun. Thats the difference.

One girl attending was drunk and ill behaving and when the matron put up a paper sign on a toilet that it was out of order, the girl barreled in to the stall and tore the paper sign down. When the matron remarked the stall is out of order and not working thats the reason for the sign. The student blurted out "....I dont think you understand I dont care...."

I believe her. I dont she or the students care.

What a shocker. If my 7 years in college culture (3 years of undergrad, and 4 years of medical school) have taught me anything, it's that today's college culture promotes problem drinking.
02:39 PM on 05/12/2010
No kidding, and at least 75% of undergrads are underage to boot.
06:02 PM on 05/11/2010
Truly about time. From the arrogance of the individual house to the unwarranted superiority complex of Miami students and alumni, I'm glad to see the University take a stand.
01:24 AM on 05/13/2010
are you kidding me? unwarranted superiority? fine, i will give you superiority from certain students; but when you graduate from the 16th undergraduate business school in the country (and a top tier institution overall) and have worked for 4 endless years to obtain it, its earned superiority...OSU grad?

I don't know why so many parents are in favor of alcohol. Why take the chance of becoming an alcoholic?

I don't know why so many parents are in favor of driving? Why take the chance of becoming an auto accident victim?
Logically this is the same argument.
08:30 PM on 05/11/2010
The logic you use fails to equate that a car crash may occur without your consent while no one will become an alcoholic without their consent alcoholic
11:33 PM on 05/11/2010
Your argument fails. Do some critical thinking.

I don't think parents send their kids off with the intent of the kid becoming and alcoholic. I was raised in a home where there was no alcohol and while I didn't become an alcoholic, I had a real drinking problem. At Miami.
03:50 PM on 05/12/2010
I agree, they don't have the intention of the kid becoming an alcoholic. But at the same time they don't think there's any harm when they go to college parties and do some drinking. I have a lot of alcoholics in my family, and that's how they all started - "just a little drink won't do any harm." I say why start something that's not necessary in your life that has the potential to become harmful? When someone asks me what does it take to become an alcoholic? I always say one sip is more than enough.

I've know of its existence for years, but the juxtaposition of "Miami" and "Ohio" still takes me aback.

the Miami Indian Tribe donated the land to the university and it was named in their honor--active relations are maintained to this day...Miami University was established in 1809, nearly 40 years before FL was a state and 90 years before Miami was an incorporated town

The whole greek system is a complete joke. It's all about partying and the younger menbers being in indentured servitude to the older members. Why anyone participates in this and why parents pay for it I have no idea.

Actually Foxislander, most national greek organizations and colleges are taking strict measures on the partying. And as for the indentured servitude of older members - that is called Hazing that that is strictly prohibited in all greek programs. All national organizations have alumni advisors and national officers looking over each new member program so if a chapter hazes, the chapter's chart is pulled and all other greek organizations on that college campus are given warnings. As a member of a national greek organization, I can tell you right now all of Miami U of Ohio, there is a national officer from all greek org speaking firmly to their chapter.
02:45 PM on 05/12/2010
Very true. I was a greek in college and we were not nor did we ever have indentured servitude. Yes, we learned about the older sisters but it was strictly a get to know each other activity. I enjoyed greek life in college. Just like everything else, you'll always have a few bad ones but the majority are good.
02:55 PM on 05/12/2010
Because people hire employees based on their greek fraternity. Fair ? You be the judge.
