Facebook Campaign Pushes For Gay Kiss On 'Modern Family'

Modern Family Gay Kiss

popeater.com:

If a little love from a Facebook campaign can land Betty White a gig hosting 'SNL,' then why can't it help Cam and Mitchell -- our favorite couple on TV -- lock lips? That's the idea behind a new Facebook group hoping to influence the producers of ABC's 'Modern Family.'

The group -- called 'Let Cam & Mitchell kiss on Modern Family!' -- was launched because Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), the delightful gay couple on the hit sitcom, have never kissed, yet Mitchell's sister Claire (Julie Bowen) and her hubby Phil (Ty Burrell) have.

Are they straight actors playing "gay" roles?

One is.

Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) - the chubby one, is straight. As per him, he said his gay character is based on his mother's personality.

But Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) - the redhead, is gay in real life.

They couldn't pay me enough.

I enjoy these two actors so much in that sitcom! They are truly a joy. Nothing they do is offensive to me.

We get it. Just forget the kissing and keep the focus on the great writing.

great idea! i adore Cam and have noticed that this "couple" barely touches. i would love to see a kiss

Some delicate souls might have a problem with Jay and Gloria in a major make-out session, too.

The "mockumentary" format and the producer raising the PDA issue suggest a great future episode for Mitchell to get all "Mitchell-y". (The leg thing with Cam was Mitchell being less self-conscious - for once - because he was distracted, hot and exhausted from his lavender farm excursion.) Nowhere in the show do the characters demonstrate much passion anyway - it's much more about hugging than sex.

I love the show, regret that it's going on hiatus and will watch every single episode several times again.

For those who want more Jesse Tyler Ferguson in the meantime, check out his online performance pieces, based on his Leaf Coneybear character from "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee".

Leave the freaking show alone! It's in its first season, and people want to shoehorn their politics into it to conform to their idea as to what constitutes "normal".

We haven't exactly seen Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara frolicking on the sofa, which is fine by me, and one could imagine with that bombshell, sexuality is a big part of Papa Bear's interest. Do we need the May-September Romance Facebook club to start a petition. Lord help us.

We know teen Haley and her boyfriend have been playing doctor, but do we need to see it to have teen sex "validated"???

The only couple we really see a substantial amount of PDA from are Phil and Claire, and that's more often than not a makeup peck after one row or another.

This is one of the best and most original comedies on television. There are a number of gay couples in the world who don't define themselves by how much they demonstrate it to the outside world, just like many hetero couples. For many, sexuality is what you do in the privacy of the bedroom for an hour a week. Who they are is about a lot more than their sexual acts, as Cam and Mitchell have demonstrated quite capably.

FOX has purposefully targeted the show by putting its "American Idol" results show up against it. It's "fans" should stop trying to help FOX kill it off, and let it evolve organically.

Fact of life, to men kissing passionately disgusts a whole lot of people. Count me as one of them.

I find the characters to be absolutely hilarious. My wife and I laugh ourselves silly watching the show.

But I don't see the point of grossing out most of your audience and turning a very funny show into a political statement.

For some gays, EVERYTHING is a political statement.

I have a lot of gay friends, and while I'd have no problem seeing a smooch, I'm with you on passionate kissing. Of course, there are a lot of heterosexual couples I wouldn't want to see kissing passionately, either.

Ditto! I don't want to see heterosexuals or homosexuals kissing and groping on TV.

Back in the day for ancients like me, you did not see much kissing at all. Just a few pecks on the lips or cheeks. However, when the actors went to their bedrooms, the love/sex was implied. We do have imaginations. Let's use them. I don't have to see a visual every time. Personally, I wish they would cut out some of the heterosexual sex acts on TV. They are just as over-the-top and unnecessary.

The thing that is so phony about ABC's defense is that they are claiming that the couple never kisses because Mithcell doesn't like Public Displays of affection. Well that is funny because they have never kissed while they were alone inside their home either.
12:44 PM on 05/13/2010
The show is supposed to be an Office-style mockumentary; thus, if the cameraman was there to get a shot of the kiss, it would be PDA.

I love Modern Family, and HAVE noticed that the couple have never kissed. But while I would say that I noticed it, I never thought it broke character or anything. The gay couple always seem very busy and like their life right now is very hectic. And Mitchell seems extremely busy and neurotic.

Sure, the "straight" coulpe kiss, but I never get the feeling either one of them has an actual job. In fact, the wife doesn't work and while the husband supposedly does, he's always at home. And their kids are mostly grown up and looking after themselves it would seem, so the parents have more time on their hands.

Speaking as a straight fan of the show, I've never gotten the impression that the show is afraid of gay affection, or favoring the straight couple. And if we are going to start complaining about being more "fair" and equal to characters on TV shows, I'd raise an issue with the trend of making white men clueless, stupid, useless idiots. Frankly, I think that is much more offensive than whether or not two gay characters kiss on tv.
01:41 PM on 05/13/2010
You would find it more offensive....because it relates to you. Gay people find this offensive because it relates to them.

What promise would a gratuitous kiss have? Certainly not to disclose their sexuality. And no shock value whatsoever. This seems a silly idea to appease those who don't understand how relationships actually work.

Does it really matter if they kiss?
The play of those two actors is comedy gold.
The actor who plays Cameron is nuanced comedy genius.

If I could order only this show and a few others, I'd still have a TV.
It's a great show without having to get all political and activist about it.
Good heavens!

I signed on, even though yeah, it;s gimmicky. Here's the thing: no one wants to see some gross make-out session by ANYONE in the cast. It's not that kind of show. However, there are clearly moments where a little kiss seems like the natural thing to do. There comes a time when it is distracting that they DON'T kiss..you start to wonder what's wrong. And I completely agree that Jay and Gloria should kiss too. Married people should kiss. Period.

I'm going to join Ed O'Neil's group instead, the one where he's petitioning the writers to have him kiss Vergara.
