Facebook CEO Allegedly Mocked Users For Sharing Personal Data With Him At Harvard

First Posted: 05/13/10 03:13 PM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:30 PM ET

Mark Zuckerberg Ims Privacy

Business Insider has posted the transcript of an instant message conversation that allegedly took place between Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and a "college friend" while Zuckerberg was still at Harvard.

Although its authenticity has not been confirmed, the IM conversation is likely to do little to allay growing concerns over Facebook's privacy policies.

"SAI sources" say that the exchange was "between a 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg and a friend shortly after Mark launched The Facebook in his dorm room."

In the electronic back-and-forth, Zuckerberg allegedly told his friend "if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard [...] just ask" and called users who had shared information with him "dumb f--ks."

The conversation must be taken with a grain of salt: Zuckerberg was young, and likely joking. However, as Venture Beat suggests, "the message makes it clear that Zuckerberg was aware of the potential invasions of privacy to which users of The Facebook were often unwittingly exposing themselves."

Zuckerberg's stance on privacy seems to have evolved considerably over the years--compare his position in 2008 with the one he articulated in 2010.

UPDATE: Facebook has contacted Business Insider with a statement on the alleged IM conversation, saying, "The privacy and security of our users’ information is of paramount importance to us. We’re not going to debate claims from anonymous sources or dated allegations that attempt to characterize Mark's and Facebook's views towards privacy." Read the rest of the comment here or read the full IM transcript here.

Wait wait, you mean a CEO actually fell into his job without a lot of merit, made billions, and is a jerk? I am just SHOCKED. Zuckerberg's problem is that he wasn't born into it so he wasn't taught how to keep his reality hidden from the masses. Close your accounts? Why? Are you going to stop every other thing you do or use with a jerky CEO? The grandstanding on this issue is cute, but totally misplaced and ineffective. Boycott BP and anything Halliburton touches before you shut down FB, K?

Facebook has devolved into a fix for narcissistic attention w hores who have too much time on their hands. The privacy issues are only making matters worse. Methinks my account will be deleted fairly soon.

The use of common sense always prevails on any social network site. I am always surprised at some of the questions that are asked of members. If I really feel it is none of your business it won't be provided. I have a FB account and some great on line connections. It only makes good sense to check account settings when changes occur or just to make sure that things are good to go within my mind.

Confuses me too, if he did say "dumb f*cks" I would have to agree with him(even if he didn't say it) , it's beyond my comprehension why anyone would trust any of these social sites. Crap I posted in Usenet in 1995 *still* shows up in Google search.

Unfortunately, what all of the "know it alls" responding to this article aren't considering is that many people using FB simply put faith into the idea that anything as "Big" as the internet would be at least SoMeWhAt "safe and legitimately regulated". That is why the internet WILL be tightly regulated in the future - because of all of the parasites like Mark Z who need to prove their value in this world by taking advantage of others' good nature!

NOT all people think about having to be guarded and to protect their every utterance and keystroke; they are the FEW who still have a flicker of HOPE left for Human Beings...and especially AMERICANS! I am ashamed, at this point in our country's evolvement, that I was born an American!

What I don't understand is why people feel it's necessary to fill out every field. People are ridiculous listing their favorite tv shows, music, movies, books, quotes. They list their schools, jobs birthdays, siblings and closest friends. They fill out that stupid "about me" field under the profile picture with an obnoxious statement about how unique they are ...dance like know one is watching ...

You know all of that info is optional, right? If you don't list it, you don't have to worry about the wrong people seeing it.

My public profile has my name, a picture and my sex. and I access the 'see how your profile appears to others' option often to make sure facebook has not unlocked my wall or photos to strangers.

It's only a problem if you make it one!

Do you ever ponder that your life is a meaningless series of insults? I hope that when you go you go fast, because the alternative is a slow exit where YOU HAVE TO PONDER WHAT YOU DID WITH YOUR LIFE. And that is gonna suck.

Here's one of your very own quotes from a few posts ago. Hmmm seems like you're doing a bit of insulting also. I'll use CAPS like you did, to get my point across..like a third grader..here it goes..HYPOCRITE!

Is Zuckerberg liberal? His actions and comments seem to be straight from the Ayn Rand playbook.

Yup, typical Ivy League sociopath.

I don't consider them "liberal" by any stretch, no matter how he votes or if he votes at all.

If I had to pick, though, I'd say libertarian. Ayn Randian, yes.

This is really a problem. First of all, most of the people running these social networks probably live behind gates in elite communities, won't share their personal info with the public. And so I find their flippant attitude about how stupid people are to reveal so much information on the internet a bit over the top (since they are making money off of the venues which encourage it).

I think google earth (of homes) should be outlawed. And I think there should be greater efforts to keep personal info private.

Speaking of privacy and the lunatics on the left. They have beat members on the right over the head with the issue of privacy and ones doctor. That is until they decided they could steal other peoples' money to buy themselves health care. And to do it the government has to insert itself in the examination room with your and your doctor.

So much for privacy. The left hates it.

I've had it with all the constantly changing privacy policies and settings. I deactivated my Facebook account last night and urged my other friends to do the same. What I didn't like was that Facebook stated I could start up my account again whenever I wanted, which of course means that whatever information I already had in there wasn't deleted but saved by them.

I believe I was able to delete a good portion of it, but info still remains. I was never dumb enough to post anything that I wouldn't want a potential employer to see, but I am still not happy that if I am discontinuing their 'product' my info is not completely deleted. It simply makes me sure that even if they say they are strengthening the privacy policy, I'm not going to want to ever have an account with them again.

So much jealousy directed at this young man. All because he's richer at 25 than 99% of the media will be if they lived to be one million years old. They are pulling their hair out in frustration that he has billions while the newspaper industry tanks.. Sorry folks. He has a brain. All you have is an education.

Yes Toocoldout, Mark Zuckerberg does have a brain, and is extremely well-educated. However, that is not what is causing what you call "jealousy". It is his arrogance, and screw you, these are my toys attitude that is angering people, not making them jealous. One case in point is his refusal to remove the "prayer" about President Obama. This "prayer" is treasonous. And I won't even get into Facebook's platform for Sarah Palin.

Mark Zuckerberg thinks he is god of the internet!

No one cares that he's rich. Bill Gates is rich too, but hasn't behaved sociopathically as this guy has in his very short career as an entrepreneur.
