(AP) MONTREAL — Police say 41 people have been arrested in the mayhem after the Montreal Canadiens' Game 7 victory over Pittsburgh.

Some stores were looted and police fired tear gas at hundreds of bottle-tossing fans after Wednesday night's game in which the Canadiens ousted the defending champions to reach the Eastern Conference final.

Now some merchants worry about what awaits in the next series against Boston or Philadelphia. But they also acknowledge that the Canadiens' great playoff run has electrified the city and boosted business.

Montreal has a history of hockey violence. Cars were burned and downtown stores trashed in the 2008 playoffs. Chaos followed Montreal's Stanley Cup victories in 1986 and 1993.

Seems like the only "out of control" actions were the looting, which doesn't look related to the crowd of Habs fans.

This from a Bruins fan.

Headline is wrong.
This was just criminals, anarchists and thugs using the huge crowds as cover for them to loot downtown. None of the 41 were hockey fans, the police and city know that.

Isn't everyone in Canada a hockey fan?

Did not know all those groups spent so much money on team jerseys.

Never really understood the whole sports riot thing, but at least wait until you win the championship before you "celebrate".

Unfortunately some street gangs take advantage of the situation to turn it into a riot and looting making the genuine fans and partisans look bad. Go Habs Go for the next win. Where other hockey town can fill an arena and movie theatres to capacity to watch an out of town game. Let that speak for itself. From a Montreal local who loves the Habs

I gave up rooting for any sports team some years back because they have all been swallowed up by the corporate giants. They have all been bought and sold and nothing matters anymore. Integrity and class has gone down the toilet.

Sidney Crosby, meanwhile, is the best player in the world.

Bar none.

41 arrests? That's nothing didn't like half the city burn down and they had to call in the army to control all the rioting that went down on Montreal after the NHL suspended Maurice "Rocket" Richard 1955?

LMAO wow I can't believe it but get this during that riot there was also 41 arrests. That's to funny!

Wonder how scared the NHL is of a Montreal-San Jose match up. Not really a big ratings draw in the US.

Sooo..They riot and loot because their team made it to the CONFERENCE FINALS? So what happens if they don't even win the whole thing? Or worst, actually WIN the championship. Scary to think how bad the riot gets then...

I can't remember exactly, but 3 to 6 people died when Montreal won in 1993.
01:20 PM on 05/14/2010
OK so you've made this comment a couple of times now so before the death toll rises again it might make sense to check your facts before you make such a claim. I remember the '93 riot and don't recall any deaths. Lots of injuries and damage but NO deaths. A quick search on the web and I didn't find any mention of deaths either. As much as I'm embarrassed by the idiots that rioted let's not exaggerate and make it seem worse than it is.

If you find any proof of a riot related death in '93 please post it and accept my apology in advance. If not, as I've seen you mention to other posters numerous times, please check your facts first.

Wha? Nobody died in those riots. I was there.

It's a shame the fans are shown burning a photo of sidney crosby who won a gold metal for their country. Actually scored the winning goal. The man can't help who drafted him. You have to respect a man who gives his all to beat a team he loved as a child, he is doing what he was paid to do. However, on the flip side, did he give it his all? If I were Crosby I would give up my Canadian citizenship become an american and win the GOLD for USA in SOCHI, RUSSIA in 4 years. The Montreal fans, should not be burning his photo, no class!!!!!!!!!!!
