Malloy, Foley Win State Party Endorsements

Connecticut Democrats for the second time in four years endorsed former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy for governor while the state's GOP picked a political newcomer, Greenwich businessman Tom Foley.

Malloy bested another Greenwich businessman and 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Ned Lamont on Saturday, winning 67 percent of the delegates. Lamont won enough support to challenge Malloy in the Aug. 10 primary.

Democrats at the Connecticut Expo Center erupted in cheers when Malloy was declared the victor. They're hoping to finally retake the governor's office after a decades-long drought. Former Gov. William O'Neill was the last Democrat to win the state's top office in the 1986 election.

"They've got a lot of experience, and they've got a real good shot at the election in November," delegate Frank Loda of Seymour said of Malloy and his Democratic team. He said Malloy should have the edge over Foley given his name recognition and background as mayor of one of the state's largest cities.

A day after picking former wrestling executive Linda McMahon to run for Senate, the Republicans chose Foley, another wealthy candidate who has never held elective office. Foley, however, has been involved behind the scenes with GOP fundraising.

The former ambassador to Ireland will face Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele and former Hartford Metro Alliance Chairman Oz Griebel in the GOP primary.

"There is a very strong mood of let's shake up the established order and get some new people in here, because it obviously isn't working well the way it is," Foley said.
