Laura Bush: Kagan Nomination Is 'Great'

05/16/10 12:16 PM ET   AP

Laura Bush

WASHINGTON — Laura Bush says she thinks it's great that Elena Kagan has been nominated for the Supreme Court.

The former first lady she's "really glad" there would be three women among the nine justices if Kagan won confirmation. Kagan would join Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor.

Laura Bush tells "Fox News Sunday" that women should be represented "in all parts of American political and civic life." She says it really makes a difference.

Former President George W. Bush also nominated a woman for the Supreme Court. But Harriet Miers, who was the White House counsel, withdrew after running into opposition from some conservatives.

I'm wondering now, all in all, is Laura Bush still a mouthpiece instead for the Rethug Party? This plays well and sounds good on the surface and she may honestly believe that another woman on the Supreme Court is a good thing. HOWEVER, I find it really interesting that Laura TOO is repeating the RECENT mantra of PalmPalin: more emphasis on women as leaders in politics overall. Little too coincidental  Read More...

My first choice would have been Cass Sunsteen, or Harold Koh,
but it is good that women, who are 53% of the population, are making
some inroads iinto the court.

I look forward tot he day when there are five
(qualified) women on the court.

I think Mrs Bush is sincere. You can't
realitically expect a first lady to
publically critise her husband's politics-even if she disagrees

of course ,Barbara Bush very gingerly disagreed with Bush 41
on abortion.
..
When she married him I doubt she
made her decision based on his politics.

I for one would cut her some slack on
her choice of a life partner.

Politics is not everything,
and those who think
it can usher in a dramatically
better world are
bound to be disapointed-whether progresive,
moderate or conservative.

Why, exactly, do we care what LB thinks? Let her post on HP like the rest of us. She's not exactly an authority on Supreme Court Nominees, is she?

You cared enough to click the article, and then to post a response.

I'd say that answers your question.

Kagan is a Neocon but the media is too corrupt to focus on it and The American People must be too stupid to question it. The Democrats win election but still seem to always lose in the end. Anyone wake up from this lie yet? It took Republicans 6 years too see through their false leader. How long will it take the Dems? Oh we are different, right? I forgot.

Kudos, Laura! You've been saying some fine things as of late. But I've respected you ever since early 2008 when you refused to "pile on" and slander Michelle Obama when the latter said she was proud of her country for the first time in her life.

So, when are you going to drop that man you've been living with? You can do much better, girl!!!

It boggles the mind to hear how impressed people are with this, when all she did was respond to a question by saying it would be great to have more women on the Court.

If she were an amoeba and said that, it would be worth that much shock and awe. Oh wait...

I am a Democrat who always respected Laura Bush. If she keeps up this talk she will be kicked out of the Republican party.

She said it was "great" to have more women on the Supreme Court. Most of America is way, way ahead of her. It's hardly groundbreaking. Even for her.

Doesn't this Bush lady know she's blowing her invitation to tea parties? First the gay marriage thing, now she's supporting Obama's nomination of yet another Jewish person to the Supreme Court. God (Pat Buchanan) knows there are already too many there. And what was that mess she was talking about abortion? Why, she's starting to sound like one of us.

You can have her, and take her tacit approval of state-sponsored terrorism with you.

Oh Please.....Laura Bush might mean well, but she's married to the dumbest man ever to be President and she sounds like one of the stepford wives on downers.

While it's "nice" of her to support the nomination, her reasoning (at least what's quoted here) isn't to be applauded... it's purely sexist. SURELY, she could have given a bit more thoughtful endorsement.

George and Laura Bush were never true conservatives. On the foreign policy front, GW was a warmongering neo-conservative who thought that spreading democracy by any means necessary would end our problems in the Middle East (see writings of Podheretz (sp?), Krystol, Pearl and Wolfowitz). From a domestic perspective, he was no different than a tax and spend liberal, only he cut taxes and continued to spend anyway. Not only did Bush I & II completely destroy this country, but now we have Laura Bush stabbing Conservatives in the back with a ridiculous endorsement of Kagan. Goodbye and Goodriddance...may we never have another Bush in National Office. The country can't afford it.

I've heard he is the most talented of the Bush's and he'd probably be a candidate in 2012 or 16 if his last name were not Bush.

Oh please. If Bush wasn't a conservative than the Pope wasn't Catholic. Do you really expect people to swallow such bull?

And, you were obviously one of the people screaming your head off, praying that the Supreme Court invalidate Al Gore's obvious win in Florida, and nationally (by 500K + votes) back in 2000.

Don't try and weasel out of it. It's people like you that stuck America with that criminal named Bush. I think you should at least own up to it.

I didn't say i didn't vote for him, i did. What I am saying is that I found out through his presidency that he is not what i expected him to be. How would I have known that he was not a true conservative when i voted for him? Besides, who else could you have voted for? Al Gore? John Kerry? I don't think so.

When will everybody realize that Presidents represent their party. I bet privately G.W. Bush would support Gay Marriage(Maybe) but surely gay rights immigration rights etc. Just like Obama supports DOMA .

I think you're right. One of his speech writers, whose name escapes me, wrote a White House tell all and said he was preparing GWB for a speech to a college crowd. When the writer told him about the obligatory condemnation of same-sex marriage, Bush, he said, told him, "I'm not going to tell some gay kid he can't get married." I'd bet he didn't care about 3/4 of the crap his constituents made him say.

It is so nice to see Laura step out from the shadow of W. She is a fine, careing and elegant lady. I wish more people on the right were more like her. I'm to the left of Chairman Mao, but I know quality when I see it. Good for her.
