Bernard Kerik Heads To Jail, Still Proclaims Innocence

Bernard Kerik

JIM FITZGERALD   05/17/10 06:02 PM ET   AP

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who was proclaimed a hero after the 2001 World Trade Center attacks, reported to federal prison Monday to begin a four-year sentence for tax fraud, lying to the White House and other felonies.

He went behind bars as inmate No. 84888-054 at the Cumberland Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Md., said Felicia Ponce, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Prisons. She said Kerik, 54, reported at about 1:45 p.m., 15 minutes ahead of his deadline.

Before showing up at the prison, the feisty former commissioner issued a statement saying he had been wronged.

In a statement dated Sunday and posted on his website, Kerik said he could not remain silent "in the face of what I believe has been a grave injustice." He complained about the judge and prosecutors and said he pleaded guilty because he was "financially helpless" and could have spent a year behind bars just awaiting trial.

He said he hoped the "injustice" would be remedied on appeal and he would be returned to his wife and his 7- and 10-year-old daughters "much sooner rather than later."

Kerik's steely resolve as he stood with his mentor, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, after the 9/11 attacks won him worldwide fame. His career peaked three years later when he was nominated by President George W. Bush to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

While he was being vetted, however, questions were raised about his finances and associations, and he bowed out of the nomination. He later admitted in court that he lied when he denied having any financial dealings with anyone doing business with New York City.

Kerik pleaded guilty in November to eight felonies. When he was sentenced in February, White Plains federal Judge Stephen Robinson said Kerik had used 9/11 "for personal gain and aggrandizement." The judge went beyond federal sentencing guidelines, which suggested two to three years in prison, because of what he called "the almost operatic proportions of this case."

After his sentencing, Kerik apologized to the nation and said he hoped history would take into account the "30 years of service I've given to the country and the city of New York."

In a television interview last month, Kerik said he stopped speaking with Giuliani in 2006, as the former mayor began running for president, to protect him. He added, however, "We will be friends for life."

Kerik said on his website that he recently watched the movie "Rocky Balboa" with his daughters to illustrate "the principles of courage, strength and perseverance" in anticipation of his imprisonment.

He said he told the girls, "It is time to move forward."

Ponce said Kerik would have his photo and fingerprints taken, undergo physical and psychological exams and be assigned to a housing unit at the 1,500-inmate prison.

Unrepentant to the end...Just like the man that hired him and advocated for him for DHS leadership. Funny how Rudy seems to have forgotten that Bernie exists...

One of Rudy's DudS - I guess the one in the article below [printed today] will be joining him soon:

"FBI Arrests NYPD Cop for Alleged Sexual Abuse of Female Suspects

"A 13-year NYPD veteran has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly forcing three women to have sex with him while he was on duty.

"Officer Oscar Sandino faces federal civil rights charges for allegedly forcing women -- two of whom were drug suspects -- to perform sex acts or else he would increase charges against them, officials said."

And this is not the first of this reported about NYPD.

It's these kind that make you wonder just how fine are the so-called finest and diminishes the deaths of the ones that died honorably.

He was a street wise guy who knew how to rise to the top. The covering of dirty tracks is an important part of being a respected politician, Kerik failed to do that. There are many others that are more corrupt, but most are more careful.

He used 911 to profit himself and now he is using his children to suck sympathy. He is a despicable public official, father, and citizen. Four years is pretty light for all that he did. Too bad the establishment is protecting Giuliani.

Shocking! Another ADMITTED criminal entering prison railing about the judge and prosecutors being out to get him. Touching! Not. Meet the new crook at the Federal prison in Cumberland, MD, same as the old crook at the Federal prison in Cumberland, MD. Bernie, you'll thrive in Cumberland because you're finally around people who completely understand you. You're a 911 Grifter who learned from King 911 Grifter, Rudy, and his Grifter wife, Judy.

This is the first and last time I will leave a comment on the HP.

The comments here might as well be from those who stood at the foot of the guillotine and cheered gleefully at every beheading!

Get the Facts! The second round of actions against Bernard Kerik were a SHAM and, very likely, were a means of discouraging Rudy Guiliani from running for elected office.

CLEAN OUT ALBANY!
CLEAN OUT THE WHITE HOUSE!
And, Oh Yes, Impeach the Incompetent Judge Robinson

This "tough-on-crime" piece of trash is getting off easy. He betrayed the trust of New York and America while portraying himself as some kind of icon of what is just and pure. The real kicker is despite the crimes he committed while holding one of the highest offices in New York City he gets to go to a minimum security prison instead of doing hard time in a place like Leavenworth

He was wronged? Yes. He didn't get to make millions off the backs of those who died on 9/11. He was short circuited in his quest to lie his way into a posh job with the fed. He denied taking favors from political allies and later admitted it was a lie. His daughters should watch Rocky movies for the rest of their lives and everything will be OK.

I don't know the facts in the case nor am I a fan of New York Cops and Bernie, but it's possible he got railroaded.
4 years is a long time if the crime was not serious.
He has my sympathy but he was still an a-hole before .
06:47 PM on 05/17/2010
you got that right you do not know the facts.he was the worst PC that ever held that position in the history
of the department.he was disliked by all the brass as well as the street patrilman.
railroaded--he is getting off easy.he is the one who told his buddy wudy to put the OEM in the wtc.when all the other departments that were part of the OEM advised against it.

he was a thief who thought the badge was his ATM card.
he was the last PC I worked under before I retired and I can tell you first hand you do not the law was for others not him.
he will be seperated from the rest of the prison population and that is just fine 23 hours a day in a locked room.he will have enough time to reflect on his wrong doings.
as far as you not being a fan of the NYPD ---why becasuse there are 42,000 officers and the 10%
of the sociopath's that manage to fool the screening process get on and do wrong.hopefully they get
caught or their partner turns them in
the blue wall has been tumbling down--maybe not fast enough but it is.

ps me being a progressive liberal most of my adult life was not very popular with many of my
fellow officers--just thought I would throw that last part in :)

Good post.
You would know better than I would.
Regarding not liking cops. I don't like the wise guys who have a chip on their shoulder. And. those policies that require ticket quotas, and those cops that feel they need to punish a suspect before their trial. Yeah..maybe 5-10%, but they ruin it for the normal cops.
