Melissa Etheridge's eleventh studio album, 'Fearless Love,' is dropping at the same time as she's rebuilding her love life from the ground up. The 48-year-old songstress recently broke up with Tammy Lynn Michaels after nine years and having twins together in 2006. Etheridge spoke extremely candidly to PopEater about the painful timing of the split, the "sexphobia" behind the 'Glee'/Newsweek debacle and the absurdities of being called "too gay" or "not gay enough."

Do we have to label everything on a sliding-scale continuum running the gamut from "gay" to "straight?"

I understand that sexual and gender identity can be fluid, but shouldn't we be saving the labels for brand-name consumer products?

I'm not so sure that Glee is obsessed with how gay her songs are but more whether they match what Glee is trying to portray. Music should come down to gay or straight as I don't view it in that way.

I am a straight man who has been a fan of Melissa since her first album. She is an excellent songwriter, and a powerful performer, and her sexual orientation has nothing to do with it. It is sad and unfortunate that she has to deal with these questions about her relationship at the same time as her album is being released, but I know she will deal with it in the same classy way she's dealt with everything else.
