More Americans Want Democrats To Control Congress (POLL)

ALAN FRAM   05/15/10 09:14 PM ET   AP

Capitol View

WASHINGTON — People want Democrats to control Congress after this fall's elections, a shift from April, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll released Saturday. But the margin is thin and there's a flashing yellow light for incumbents of both parties: Only about one-third want their own lawmakers re-elected.

The tenuous 45 percent to 40 percent preference for a Democratic Congress reverses the finding a month ago on the same question: 44 percent for Republicans and 41 percent for Democrats. The new readout came as the economy continued showing signs of improvement and the tumultuous battle over the health care law that President Barack Obama finally signed in March faded into the background.

"To the extent that Democrats can focus on job creation rather than health care, they tend to do better," said Jack Pitney, a political scientist at California's Claremont McKenna College.

Democrats hold a 254-177 majority over Republicans in the House, with four vacancies, while Democrats control 59 of the Senate's 100 seats, counting support from two independents. Despite those disadvantages, the GOP has gained political momentum in recent months and its leaders hope to win control of at least one chamber of Congress this November.

Compared with the last AP-GfK poll in April, the survey showed Republicans losing some support among married women, a key component of many GOP victories. Democrats picked up ground among young and rural voters.

"I'm a new Democrat," said Harley Smithson, 51, of Baltimore, who said he had recently switched from the GOP. "I want to be with a party that's for something instead of against everything."

Even so, the poll underscores that the political environment remains ominous for Democrats.

Just 35 percent say the country is heading in the right direction, the lowest measured by the AP-GfK survey since a week before Obama took office in January 2009. His approval rating remains at 49 percent, as low as it's been since he become president.

Congressional Democrats win approval from only 37 percent, though congressional Republicans score an even drearier 31 percent. Democrats and Republicans are about evenly trusted to handle the economy, an issue Democrats once dominated and one that is crucial at a time when the country's job situation, though brightening, remains grim.

Only 36 percent said they want their own member of Congress to win re-election this fall, a noteworthy drop from the 43 percent who said so in April and the lowest AP-GfK poll measurement this year. Much of the restiveness seems to be among Republicans: While Democrats were about equally divided on the question, Republicans expressed a preference for a new face by a 2-to-1 margin.

"I want to send a message to Washington loud and clear that I'm not happy, I'm really unhappy, both with Republicans and Democrats," said Diane Mullens, 54, of Huntsville, Ala. "If that means I have to vote everybody out and make a stand with my one vote, I'll do it."

The poll was conducted more than two weeks after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill began and during the weekend of the abortive car bomb attack on Times Square in New York. The survey detected no significant changes in the public's trust in Obama for his handling of the environment or terrorism.

In recent days, the anti-incumbent wave has already spelled defeat in party primaries for a pair of Washington fixtures: Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, and Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va. Other veterans such as Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., have announced their retirements, and Sens. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., and Arlen Specter, D-Pa., face primary challenges Tuesday that could add them to the political casualty list.

Among those most eager to turn incumbents out of office are the one in four who called themselves supporters of the conservative tea party movement. Two-thirds say they want a new person representing them in Washington, compared with half of everyone else.

"The Republican Party has more or less left me," said Mike Miller, 40, of Republic, Mo., a tea party backer who wants a new member of Congress. "Everybody's shifted to the left."

The AP-GfK Poll was conducted May 7-11 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media. It involved cell and landline telephone interviews with 1,002 randomly chosen adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

I've am a business owner with operations in 7 states....been a Republican over 50 years... and anyone who thinks the economic situation of our nation has happened since President Obama has been in office, or is his and or the Democrat's fault is DOUBLE_DIPPED IN THE DUMBS! Our current economic situation is a DIRECT result of 12 years of GOP Congressional control and the 8 years of Cheny's control via his mouth piece George. John McCain said (repeatedly) during his campaign, "the GOP Congress has been on a national spending spree for years...like DRUNKEN SAILORS on a weekend leave" HE WAS/IS CORRECT !

This nation is MUCH better off with Democrats in control...and I plan to vote for Democrats in our primary election next month...and in November too. If you thinks its bad now...PUT the same political party, and GOP MIND SET, back in control...and our children and grandchildren's futures are DOOMED.

No WAY Dems are toast. Who the heck would EVER trust a Republican after what they have done to this country! Republicans talk all the time about Democrats sending jobs overseas but that is also a bigazzed lie. Republicans are the ones that sent millions and millions of jobs overseas and then obliterated the rest when they bankrupted the country FOR THE SECOND TIME!

They blasted a 7.5 trillion dollar whole in our economy, they will no allow Mr. Obama to spend money at home on Americans but they always approve of war funds. They spent billions and billions rebuilding Iraq and their infrastructure but ALL OF A SUDDEN WANT TO KNOW WHERE THE MONEY WOULD COME FROM FOR BENEFITS FOR MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF AMERICANS SO THEY CAN FEED THEIR FAMILIES.

NO Way would we allow Republicans to finish this country off. They make money on war, rebuilding other countries but they spend a pitance in the USA on the American people.

They are finished and we WILL run them out of Washington in November. They have sabotaged our country to take out Mr. Obama and we REFUSE to be collateral damage in their war against the black guy in the White House.

No Shame, No Morals and NO BALLS!

Summer jobs? Forgot about them I guess. The summer months will be decisive as more people will be working. This will lead to positive numbers for the Dems.
The Repubs will continue with the immigration issue which , as history has proven, is ALWAYS a losing issue in an election year.

This is why it is so important for us to spread the wealth around. Obama recognizes the inequity in the capitalist system, and he also recognizes the fairness that is derived from a true commune system whereby all members of a collective achieve or fail at the exact same level. And as we have witnessed, the majority of Americans also support such a system, otherwise they would not have put a ruler in place who made no mystery about his goal to change the United States into an egalitarian society.

From the onset Obama pledged to eradicate capitalism while replacing it with a blend of fascism and socialism, and the American people loved him for it. True Americans have always yearned for the paradise found in countries like Russia under Stalin, or present day Cuba and North Korea. True Americans are tired of having to work just to obtain the things that are rightfully theirs: a house, car, vacation, spending money, education, health care, etc. These items are all owed to people by society, but only in America are the citizens forced to fight over such scraps. In contrast, Cuba provides all of these things to its citizens free of charge.

So yes, it is the duty of our rulers to make our decisions for us, especially economic ones. If we would only let them take full control, we could all live as well as common Cubans do.

November is still a long way off, and the economy continues to improve. The Tea Party movement has been emboldened, which may lead to even more extreme rhetoric and far right Republican candidates. This could create concern in the "silent majority' come time for elections.

great, more dems = more socialism. dems only want one thing, more people dependant on the government. We have 52% of the population living off the government and only 50% of the population paying an income tax. It is the idiocracy syndrome. You have ignorant people living off the government who then breed to get more government money and they are not intelligent enough to be raising children so then their children are having children before they even graduate hs so they become wards of the state. Socialism fails and the dems will cripple america. Tell me this libs, what spending do you think the dems would make in order to stop our crazy debt? End socialism and all problems will be solved. Except for those who live off the government. But america isn;t about living off the government it is about living off yourself and making yourself rich. Not stealing from other americans because you fail.

Well, then I hope they won't mind when we go bankrupt, because that's where we're headed if the Democrats keep doing what they're doing. The Democrats have racked up more debt in the three years they've controlled Congess since 2007 than the Republicans managed to rack up in the six previous years. It's incredible that we could be so worried about what's happening to Greece and the Euro while we keep electing politicians who are repeating the policies that have wrecked Greece (and Spain and Italy and Portugal, etc., etc.).

What garbage you write. Democrats haven't racked up ANY debt and they never do. The ONLY reason Democrats have to spend money is to get us out of the 7.5 trillion dollar hole Republicans blasted in our economy.

Why don't you go and read before you comment. This is just out and out bald faced lies.

Democrats couldn't get anything done when they had Congress for 2 years under the Bush/Republican dictatorship. They wouldn't allow Republicans to put through their 2.5 trillion dollar tax breaks so Repoubs shoved it through under reconciliation in the dead of night, like they did everything. They sold the US for 5 trillion dollars to the Chinese as well.

What the heck is the matter with you? Do you read at all? This is just typical Republican garbage and lies.

Republicans have historically failed in their administrations, grown government reach to unbelievable proportions and spent spent spent us into bankruptcy, TWICE. The spent billions and billions rebuilding and Iraq and their universal health care but when Obama has even TRIED to spend money at home they freak out. After November it won't matter. We are running these bums out of Washington for good. They do nothing, they offer nothing and they are NOTHING and we cannot recover under we get rid of them.

I can't believe we've actually recovered somewhat DESPITE Republicans.

Gawd, no one, NO ONE is going to give Republicans a chance to finish us off

Go and READ!

And by the way we have already been bankrupted TWICE by Republicans and the most successful administrations that have done the country the most good are Democratic and the most under Clinton.

You have written this garbage here before and you know it's nothing but lies. Block headed people that keep repeating things without learning are what's wrong with this country.
