Souder, Leading Drug Warrior, Asks Forgiveness For Sins

Congress Souder

Mark Souder resigned his congressional seat on Tuesday, confessing to an affair with a staffer and ending an eight-term career as a Republican from Indiana.

In stepping down, he asked God for forgiveness in a rambling, all-caps public statement. "I SINNED AGAINST GOD, MY WIFE AND MY FAMILY BY HAVING A MUTUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH A PART-TIME MEMBER OF MY STAFF," he wrote. "MY COMFORT IS THAT GOD IS A GRACIOUS AND FORGIVING GOD TO THOSE WHO SINCERELY SEEK HIS FORGIVENESS AS I DO."

Forgiveness, however, is not a quality that Souder shares with his Lord. No Republican has been more outspoken in Congress in his moral condemnation of Americans who use illicit drugs. In order to punish such sinning, Souder championed and vigorously defended perhaps the least forgiving law on the federal books: the denial of federal student aid for any student convicted of drug possession, no matter how minor.

Souder's drug-war passion fueled his rise to the chairmanship of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources, which had jurisdiction over domestic and international anti-drug efforts and had oversight of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, otherwise known as the drug czar's office.

Souder was chairman of that subcommittee between 2001 and 2007. During those years, nearly 200,000 students were denied college aid for drug violations, according to data unearthed by a Freedom of Information Act request filed by Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), a longtime nemesis of Souder. (Here's Souder complaining the student group "harassed" him in his home district.) In Souder's own state, 8,903 students were denied aid during that time.

Opponents of Souder's law argued that it would be difficult to craft a more counter-productive public policy. Souder responded by calling those opponents -- largely teachers organizations and church groups -- a "small but determined coalition of drug-legalization groups."

Souder's harsh judgment extends to those whose mistakes are much milder than his. In an abstinence video that Souder produced with the aide with whom he was having sex, he condemns an AIDS victim who had argued against his abstinence-only approach. "I was particularly offended when two young people were added to the supposed scientist table," Souder says of a recent congressional hearing, "and they said, one had AIDS and he said, if it hadn't been for an abstinence program that didn't give him instruction on how to put the condom on correctly, he wouldn't have AIDS. In other words, it's everyone's fault but his."

In resigning, however, Souder put some of the blame on "Washington" for his decision. "IN THE POISONOUS ENVIRONMENT OF WASHINGTON DC, ANY PERSONAL FAILING IS SEIZED UPON, OFTEN TWISTED, FOR POLITICAL GAIN. I AM RESIGNING RATHER THAN TO PUT MY FAMILY THROUGH THAT PAINFUL, DRAWN-OUT PROCESS," Souder complained.

Souder is not one who takes criticism lightly. While this reporter was writing for Politico, Souder twice wrote letters to the editor to complain of his previous work for the Marijuana Policy Project.

Now that Souder's career is over, his opponents in the drug-policy reform community are left with the last word.

"Personally, I really don't care what Mark Souder does in his private time," said Tom Angell, a former senior SSDP official who's now with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. "But now that he's made a big mistake of his own, I hope he'll begin working to undo the harsh drug laws he has championed and that have prevented people from moving on with their lives after making mistakes. I'm sure that the more than 200,000 students who have lost college aid under Souder's Higher Education Act drug penalty would be glad to have his lobbying help now that he'll have some more free time."

(Not so) funny, how when it's something others are doing, showing a firm response to the "sin" is worth ruining someone's life over (not his own, of course). But when the offender happens to be himself, he's suddenly all understanding. Now, it's a "failing" -- like not remembering to shine one's shoes, maybe. He can go to church and be forever forgiven for this "gaff" that's now ruined his career.

Why is it so hard for these guys to remember that they are human? They must have a circuit in their heads that reflexively denies any grounding in reality. No wonder they are so anti-drug. The first thing drugs like marijuana do is defuse your sense of yourself -- they defuse our carefully-built-up image of who we are, and replace that with pure feeling. For an Evangelical, whose self-image is so tight and dominant, who without Christ "in his life" is nothing, such a temporary forgetfulness must seem like death absolute.

Isn't it time that we took the formation and implementation of public policy out of the hands of such incompletely developed individuals? Is there some test we could give candidates, that would reliably tell us just how mature their worldview is -- before we have to find out this way?

This is unbelievable!. These people's hypocrisy has no limits. And this is the stuffer with whom our esteemed "servant of the people" discussed abstinence education techniques. And a "leading drug warrior" too... Do we really need any more evidence of these "warriors" utter depravity, or should it now become what the philosophers would call "a priori" knowledge, something that we just know, like 2+2 = 4. Oh well, no sympathy from me whatsoever. What we need now is the nationwide outcry against the DEA disinformation campaign claiming that Marinol and Medical Marijuana are one and the same. This is so grossly untrue that I lack words to adequately describe it. Medical Marijuana has over 70 active compounds, acting as a coherent Whole that is scientifically and philosophically greater than the simple sum of its parts and most definitely greater than any one individual part, even if that part is a synthetic THC "analogue" called Marinol. Please join me in debunking this deliberate disinformation, so that we can open the access to medical marijuana by patients who desperately need this natural medicine.

HIS comfort is that god is gracious blah blah blah ....

What about the comfort of those whom he hurt?

Again, he only concerned for himself.

And hell, there is even narcissism in his forgiveness plea:

"God is *only* forgiving to those who *sincerely* seek his forgiveness"

Well, let's hope he's sincere enough, otherwise he may actually have to suffer guilt or even ...*gasp* .... consequences!!

***************************************************************************

AS A NON-PARTISAN INDIVIDUAL -- BUT YET A BORN-
AGAIN CHRISTIAN -- I FIND THIS BEYOND APPALLING.
EVEN THOUGH I WAS RAISED IN CHURCH ALL MY LIFE,
I STILL FIND THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE JUST BEYOND
DISGUSTING. THEY 'PREACH' IT BUT DON'T FOLLOW
IT. AND THAT HE ENDED UP CRYING ON AIR IS EVEN
MORE DISGUSTING.

WHAT YOU GENERALLY FIND IS THAT THOSE WHO
PROTEST TOO MUCH USUALLY HAVE THE MOST
TO COVER UP IN THE WAY OF SKELETONS IN
THEIR OWN CLOSETS.

...And in some people's eyes, posting comments in ALL-CAPS can DEFINITELY be seen as protesting too much. Just saying...

And I'd just as soon they stopped "preaching it" altogether. Take it from us sinners (yourself most emphatically included, dude!), hearing how bad we all are, FROM SOMEONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, gets old reallllllllly quickly.

And just in case you still think you are holier than God, didn't one of those Holy Voices say that we are all sinners? You know it's true, dude. So, doesn't it rankle you, when you are lectured on the grain in your eye, from someone with a beam in his own?

Gee, me too.

Wow !! This is almost as disgusting as Clinton raising his hand and swearing under oath to the Congress and American people that "he NEVER had sex with that women". Then of course, Clinton cried like a baby too when he got caught in his lies and had to fess up. Maybe Souder can become a political commentator for cnn like Spitzer?

Only a true narcissist gets caught doing something like this and tries to turn it around and make a martyr of himself.

Seriously!! For someone who was so intent on heaping personal responsibility on others, he's lacking in it himself.

Aww!
Poor guy! It wasn't his pants-down politics that got him in trouble, it was the poisonous nature of DC! /sarcasm

Anyone preaching "Family Values", Anti-Gay, or abstinence should be REQUIRED to take a polygraph and GUARANTEE to the public that they are following their own advice to others and a promise to IMMEDIATELY resign from office if they don't follow their advice to others. And perhaps ALL those preaching family values should immediately be investigated to make sure they are not cheating on their spouses. That seems to be the Red Flag for hypocrisy, especially if they are a GOP member.

So, Congressman Souder, how, exactly, was your affair with someone young enough to be a daughter, seized upon for political gain? I am so glad that you decided to resign for the sake of your family. If only, if only, you had thought to keep your hands off the help for the sake of your family.

Perhaps you can go into counselling, or, better yet, go into rehab for "sexual addiction", another name for being a womanizer. And please, don't just apologize to your constituents and say that you acted badly. Instead, blame the media. After all, you a very special person and the rule of good conduct does not apply to you. As a congressman, you have a free pass.

Whiner!

Jeez...these guys all say the same things after they've been caught. This guy sounds just like Jimmy Swaggart did after he got caught. The thing is...they're really NOT sorry that they did it -- they're just sorry that they got caught! The sadder thing is,they beg for forgiveness from the sheep that follow them, and they get it.

I'm just so shocked that yet another supposedly religious values pasty overweight and scary looking repug somehow gets a chick that's obviously hotter than his wife into an affair and calls out to gawd. I just wonder how drugged up she must have been to pick him or was she just wearing 'Beer Goggles'?

Like when he tried to explain how federally controled substances are out of control?-halarious!

[Or] back in '05 when he did his "Medicine Smoke Bubble" presentation on the floor of congress, in some lame, disconnected tirade against a medical marijnuana bill, complete with playcards, what a dog and pony show that was.

He is a bumbling, no clue, idiot, good freakin' riddence!
